Having begun his BA in German at King’s College London, Thomas Crew completed his degree at Royal Holloway, spending an intercalated year studying philosophy and teaching English in Berlin. He took his MA in European Culture and Thought at University College London, which was generously funded by the London Arts and Humanities Partnership, before completing his PhD at the University of Cambridge. As part of his doctoral research, supervised by Dr Martin Ruehl, Dr Crew spent two years as a Hanseatic Scholar at Berlin’s Humboldt University, while plumbing the archives at the city’s Academy of Arts. Ramsey Dukes is the current and most well-known pen name of Lionel Snell, a contemporary English magician, publisher, and author on magic and philosophy.Lionel was born to a Kibbo Kift couple as WW2 was ending and lived his childhood in a converted water mill deep in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds. From his village school he won a scholarship plus government bursary to attend prep and public school in Bristol, where he discovered a wonderful library of ancient alchemy and magic books that had been bequeathed to the school by EJ Holmyard.A scholarship to Cambridge University enabled him to study Crowley and other occult books in the University library, and he still had time to graduate in pure mathematics. He tried teaching, gardening, aircraft stress analysis, copy writing, technical writing and a few other things before becoming a freelance promotional writer, mostly for hi-tech industries.Meanwhile he had made a name for himself – or rather a number of names – writing and self-publishing books and articles on magic, occult philosophy, and radical worldviews. These included a wicked satirical column for Aquarian Arrow, a UK neo-pantheist magazine in the 1970-80s. Erin Stapleton researchs destruction, archival imperfection, material volatility, resistance and ambiguity in digital and visual cultures, identity and media. Her current project, Catastrophic Loss, investigates how colonial logics continue to inform everyday digital media cultures and practices, the fragility of these systems, and the losses they threaten and produce.We discuss her book, The Intoxication of Destruction in Theory, Culture and Media: A Philosophy of Expenditure After Georges Bataille, which was published in 2022 by Amsterdam University Press (and published in paperback by Routledge in 2025). In it, she takes destruction as the founding operation of culture and trace it through philosophy, the media of September 11 and disaster films, end-of-the-world narratives, execution and eroticism, before addressing the effects of the displacement of linear destruction on the culture and media produced in digital systems. In other words, it’s got sex, death, explosions… and computers. And an unexpected amount of Walter Benjamin for some reason. Steve Dowden is a Professor of German language and literature in the Department of German, Russian, and Asian Languages and Literatures. He graduated in 1984 from the University of California with a Ph.D in German literature. After a decade teaching at Yale and a year as a Humboldt Fellow at the University of Konstanz he joined the Brandeis faculty in 1994. Dowden has published on German literature, art, music, and intellectual history from the eighteenth to the twenty-first century.
