SISTER RAY, the project of Edmonton-born songwriter Ella Coyes, was conceived out of necessity; a self-designed vehicle built to examine trauma with unflinching honesty. Armed with a voice that soars and scrapes in equal measure, Coyes converts first-person recollections of big, complicated love into universally potent allegories. Raised on the expansive prairies of Sturgeon County, Sister Rayâs music is steeped in a wide range of cultural influences. With gospel bluegrass and 90âs country playing in the background of their youth, it was the traditional MĂ©tis music played at home that not only brought them closer to their heritage, but taught them a form of storytelling rooted in collective value, resilience, and safety.
Communion, the 2022 debut album by Sister Ray, is a raw, meticulously-crafted portrait of momentous, ordinary moments; experiences that define your past, and instruct how you move through the world. Quickly met with critical acclaim, the album was longlisted for the 2022 Polaris Prize, and Pitchfork deemed it âa complex study of webs of interpersonal hurt, and a celebration of emotional survival.â They have been featured on Audiotree, Paste, NPR, and more, along with appearances at Pitchfork Festival in Paris & London, Primavera Weekender, and headline and support dates across North America and Europe.
Teeth, their new EP on Royal Mountain Records, came from a need for space and the repercussions conditional to this desire. âI was thinking often about intimacy and avoidanceâcrawling around to find where my place would be,â Coyes says. The songs were written quickly and vigorously, mimicked through the recording process, crafted by Coyes over five days, recruiting Ginla ( the Brooklyn based duo behind Communion and early Adrienne Lenker) as collaborators and producers. With three originals and a spectral cover of âI Never Will Marry,â inspired by Linda Ronstadtâs interpretation, Coyes discerns big and small epiphanies in Teeth. Their yearning tone and staggering honesty trickles throughout and the erosion leads to an openingâvacant, unfamiliar, and with room to breathe.

If you've listened to the show then you know how I feel about missing openers at shows. Mae Krell is the exact reason why I never miss openers. I had the distinct pleasure in seeing Mae perform at the Mercury Lounge in NYC. I was compelled after the show to run up to her and tell her how I felt about what I just experienced. Not only did I witness her do something extremely special on stage but I got to know her and understand why I felt the way I did that evening. Mae's storytelling brings you on a rollercoaster of emotions and once the ride stops, you find yourself wanting to go again. We find ourselves in a world of over abundance and listening to Mae's music make me feel like all my anxiety has been whisked away and my life simpler.

In case you haven't heard, one of LA's finest garage-psych aficionados, Charles Moothart (best known for his work with Ty Segall and Fuzz), released his new"apocalyptic pop" record, Black Holes Don't Choke, released on March 8th via In The Red Records.
LA garage-psych maestro Charles Moothart (formerly CFM) released his new LP, Black Holes Don't Choke. Announced at the beginning of December, Moothart has shared a host of singles from the record, which includes today's focus track, "Hold On". Moothart's signature heavy fuzz is still present, however it takes a bit of a backseat to his newly-present vocals as they swing across the track, building to the tracks infectious, titular chorus.
Black Holes Don't Choke is meant to be a present meditation. It was written, recorded, and mixed entirely by Charles Moothart in his Los Angeles studio, and he plays all of the music heard on the album. The implementation of samplers is a noteworthy development as well as the general inclusion of more electronic elements.
Still, the album sounds at home in Moothart's universe of music to date. The album reflects the here and now. It embraces the elements and sounds of the present without glamorizing any tense - past, present, or future. It conveys a feeling of chaotic love and empowerment within a time of existential turmoil - aiming to lift up what positives exist in a world riddled with toxicity and complexity.Thanks for listening!!! This week we welcome Ian MacDougal of the Lonestar indie rockers BROKEN GOLD. The band is set for its first release of new music in three years . MacDougall is a member of cult, Texan punks Riverboat Gamblers, he spent 5 years with Band Of Horses, and has been drafted into countless other punk and crust band tours. Bobby Daniel (bass) provides low-end to legendary Austin songwriter Alejandro Escovedo and Ben Lance (guitar) is part of anthemic rockers Mountain Time, while drummer Sam Rich has served stints in Del-Vipers and Black Books. While they all call Austin, TX, âhomeâ, theyâve all put in their fair share of miles performing across the globe. âSpiralingâ sets the stage for the Broken Goldâs upcoming sophomore album Wild Eyes, which arrives on May 3rd via hometown label Chicken Ranch Records. The albumâs name is a nod to a lyrical phrase shared both by the album track âShamblingâ, as well in Thin Lizzyâs âThe Boys Are Back In Townâ. The Thin Lizzy reference is one that always resonated with MacDougall who felt the line âguess who just got back today, them wild eyed boys that had been awayâ summed up the fried feeling of arriving home after weeks on tour. The collection of songs that make up Wild Eyes reach across genre boundaries to showcase the technical versatility and emotional insight that MacDougall has refined over the past two decades as he performed everywhere from punk squats to headlining mainstages at Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza. The constant is the honesty and vulnerability in both MacDougallâs DIY ethics and approach to music, facts that are laid bare on every note of Wild Eyes. To bring Wild Eyes to life, Broken Gold enlisted acclaimed engineer Stuart Sikes (The Walkmen, Modest Mouse, The White Stripes) to track and mix the record, while the legendary Howie Weinberg (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins) provided the mastering polish.

BORROWED SPARKS is the solo endeavor of Nashvilleâs Mike Bay. A seasoned guitarist with a broad range of session and performance experience, the singer/songwriterâs Americana rock sound first coalesced in his 2020 release, The Prettiest One Left.
Acclaimed by Underground Music Collective as a âprime cut of rock and roll,â The Prettiest One Left is a testament to Bayâs foundations. The deep-rooted influence of artists like the Eagles and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is palpable, and heightened by resonating elements of folk and punk rock.
Later that year, Borrowed Sparks reached emotive new heights with a deluxe version of the record, which featured acoustic reimaginings of three previous tracks.
This exploration of the album culminated in 2021 with the release of Borrowed Sparksâ first live performance series, The Smoakstack Sessions. The revisitation included recordings of three songs from the original tracklist as well as a cover of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakersâ âRefugee.â
Now, Borrowed Sparksâ next iteration is here. Part of a new generation of bands formed over Zoom and FaceTime, Tarnish began in 2020 when guitarist/vocalist Karl Forster and bassist Dane Carlson started working on tracks despite living over 400 miles apart. The California-based group, now rounded out by drummer Jack Breger and guitarist Natty P, comes from a diverse musical background with influences all over the genre spectrum, but with a shared love for the 2010s pop punk/emo sound. With introspective lyrics and hard-hitting riffs, Tarnish has been working to craft a signature sound that stands out from the crowd.
Recorded with Ben Hirschfield (The Story So Far, Mom Jeans., No Pressure), their most recent single, âFeeling The Same,â explores new territory for the band, experimenting with time signatures and song structure. Coming off the success of the poppier, yet similarly intense, âCold Walks to the Liquor Storeâ in July, the juxtaposition between these singles showcases the bandâs range as they gear up for the release of their next EP. The band continues to build off their success in their respective Sacramento and San Diego local scenes, and has had the privilege of performing in venues such as the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco and the Observatory in Santa Ana. Actively seeking new ways to expand their audience, Tarnish is eager to grow as artists and performers, while still maintaining the sincerity of their work.
