Saito Hajime was born during the Tokugawa Shogunate's decline and would serve as the captain of the third unit of the Shinsengumi. The Shinsengumi were an elite group of swordsmen founded to protect the Shogun and its representatives. Many ronin would wish death to the shogunate in order to expel all western influences from Japan and would long to see the emperors of Japan back in power. Noblemen, peasants and young samurai were dissatisfied with the shogunates handling of foreigners entering japan. This would result in political chaos and civil war would brew.

  • Toda Mariko as referred to in the Shogun tv show is based of the real life of the noblewoman Akechi Tama, now remembered to history as Hosokawa Gracia. She was born during the tumultuous era of the Sengoku period, a period in Japanese history in which civil wars took place continuously throughout the 15th and 16th centuries. During this time the power of the Ashikaga Shogunate and the emperor were both greatly diminished, with both unable to unify or control the Daimyos in the country. So dire was the situation, that the shogun, the de-facto rulers of the country held no influence and were reduced to puppets of various war lords. At the same time, christian missionaries had arrived in Japan and by the 1540s over 100,000 people had converted, including many Daimyos and also the noble lady Akechi Tama would also convert, however, Christianity would soon represent a threat to the national unity of Japan. Many Daimyos converted to christianity to gain access to gunpowder and weapons which the Christians had brought over from Europe. The first Daimyo to convert to christianity was Omura Sumitada , the first ever Roman Catholic Japanese lord in 1562. He began a scorched earth campaign against local Buddhists destroying their temples. This example of fanaticism or religious devotion added to the Japanese suspicion against the new religion.

Nevertheless Akechi Tama's faith would not waver even though there were edicts by the Emperor himself (ogimachi) to ban the religion. She was one of the only upper class women in Japanese history to convert to catholicism during this era. This is her story.

  • William Adams, also known as Miura Anjin in Japan, was an English sailor who became one of the first Western samurai in Japanese history. His life story is one tragedy, remarkable transformation and cultural exchange. William lived during the Elizabethan era also known as the golden age, which represented the English renaissance. It was an age of exploration and expansion abroad. Economically, the country would begin to flourish and benefit greatly from the new era or trans-Atlantic trade. Francis Drake's famous raiding expedition would contribute to this in a voyage where he became the first englishman to circumnavigate the globe, plundering six coastal towns and taking 13 ships raising enormous amounts of money for the nations' coffers. This era was marked by sailors wishing to make their wealth by crossing the depths of the ocean. William Adams was one of those men, this is his story.

  • Today, I will be sharing with you the intriguing tales of four English monarchs, each shrouded in the mysteries of their untimely and enigmatic deaths. One met his end by a dagger thrust in the back; another perished abruptly after drinking a cup of mead, succumbing to violent convulsions. A third monarch was fatally struck by an arrow during a routine hunting expedition. Another died with no explanation in any sources, however after his death his body was beheaded and thrown into the river thames, conveying foul play. In each case, the culprits responsible for these regicides remain obscured by the shadows of history. Regicide, the heinous act of slaying a king, has always been met with the most severe of punishments. Yet, the identities of these assassins remains a mystery. This is the story of 4 English Kings, who met tragic ends. • This Video will cover the lives of King Alfred the Great, King Edward the Elder and Æthelstan. Over 3 generations, these legendary Kings would unify the divided land of England. England was made from 4 major Kingdoms, Mercia, Wessex, Northumbria and East Anglia. During Alfred's life the Great Heathen army led the sons of Ragnar Lodbrok had overran all of these kingdoms except Wessex which alone was resisting. War and fate would lead Alfred to sit the throne. He would bring the Vikings to heel and would restore his Kingdom to greatness.

His son Edward the Elder's life was one of military expansion, further conquering lands to the north that had been taken by the vikings during the invasion of the great army. Edward would eliminate many Viking Kings that had crowned themselves Kings in the lands they had taken. He would gain overlordship over East Anglia and Mercia.

His son Æthelstan would dream of being the master of Britain, and would become the first overlord of all of England and Scotland. However, his vassals would grow wary of his overlordship and would fight him in the Battle of Brunanburh. Æthelstan won the battle, but lost control of Scotland, with the end of his territory being the border dividing Scotland and Northumbria. In just 3 generations, the line of Alfred took all of England.

  • In the mystical landscapes of eleventh-century Uppland, Sweden, there existed a figure whose name resonated with both the harsh clangor of battle and the delicate intricacy of ancient symbols, his name was Ulf of Borresta. But Ulf was more than a marauder; he was a custodian of ancient wisdom, a guardian of the sacred runes. In the flickering firelight of his runic sanctum, he crafted inscriptions that whispered secrets of forgotten tales. The very air around him seemed to pulse with the energy of these mystic symbols. Most early medieval Scandinavians were probably literate in runes, known as runic alphabets which were used by the Germanic peoples and Norse before they adopted the latin alphabet. Runes were used for record-keeping and were found on things like weapons, ivory, and coins. Runes were often erected by long-distance explorers seeking to document their visits or memorialize their fallen comrades. Runecarvers on commission or on their own carved memorials and gravestones more than anything else. This was the case for Ulf There were two runestones which were raised in his memory. The first one reads: "And Ulf took three Danegelds in England. That was the first that Skagul Toste paid. Then Thorkell the Tall paid. Then Canute the Great Paid. This conveys that Ulf, a master Stonemason and Runemaster was also a Viking Warrior. Raiding the shores of England in the year 991 with Skoglar Toste who was named after a Valkyrie due to his love for war. He then returned to England with Thorkell the Tall and the Jomsvikings in the year 1012, to devastate the country, leaved its land scorched and its wealth extorted. Ulf Finally returned in the year 1018 with Prince Canute who took the whole county of England after a series of climactic battles, and became Canute the Great, eventually creating the North Sea Empire. As Ulf of Borresta etched his name into the annals of history, he stood at the crossroads of two worlds – one grounded in the rustic beauty of Uppland, the other defined by the seas and the distant shores of England. His tale, like the ancient runes he mastered, was a symphony of conquest and legacy. This is his story.
