One of the most under-appreciated ways to build connection and empower your teenager is to handwrite a note. This can be done as a way to heal your relationship after an argument or as a way to communicate how much you love and believe in them.

My wife and I love going to the movies. We especially love movies based on true stories. Last week we went to see a new release. The Boys in the Boat. While the details of the story are entertaining, it is the way this story illustrates the power of connection that I want to share today.

I am writing this on January 2, 2024. The start of a new year is typically considered a time for fresh starts. This is when we look back over our life and identify opportunities for growth. We excitedly layout plans for accomplishing personal and professional goals.
Unfortunately, by the first of February many of us will struggle to keep the momentum going. The initial energy burst has faded and our enthusiasm begins to wane. And Just like that old habits creep back in. Six months later we find ourselves in the exact same place we were back on January 1st.
If this is a familiar story, I have an alternative approach for you to put into practice.

I have been reviewing the 5 Love Languages of Children. In the last couple of chapters there is some discussion about discipline and the parentâs role as a teacher of their child. In my work with parents this topic raises a lot of questions.
Today, I am going to share with you a seven step process that I used in those moments where one of our children said something or did something they shouldnât have done.

All bad or unwanted behavior by your child is a call for love. A call to connect.
One great way to build connection is with quality time.
If you are a busy parent, keep this in mind. It doesnât have to be additional time. Just be intentional about making better use of the time you are already spending together.

Do you ever feel a lack of purpose in your life or like something is missing?
This past week I was reminded of the pathway to purpose via a great movie.
Over the last week or two I have noticed multiple social media posts related to junior high and high school cross county. This is the time of year where seasons are wrapping up with one big final meet. All of these cross country photos inspire my wife and I to go back and rewatch the movie McFarland USA. This movie is based on the true story of a down and out high school coach that turned a group of hispanic boys into the California state high school cross country champions. If you havenât seen this movie, I would highly recommend it. It is a story of how one man discovered his purpose in the most unlikely of places.

Do we sometimes make parenting and relationships harder than they need to be?
I Know I have.
I am working on a keynote address entitled âA Heroâs Two Journeysâ. The message is centered around the impact of choosing love over fear regardless of our circumstances or how life is putting the squeeze on us.
As part of the process, I have been revisiting some of the stories I have written in the past. The goal is to find one or two that I could include in this new talk. Today, I am going to share one of these stories because I love the message.

FREE RESOURCE: 10 Questions you should never ask your teenager.

Last week a great video popped up on my YouTube Feed. It was a video of a little league baseball game. The batter was a six year old girl. In the video, she takes a swing and barely gets the ball off the tee. As she was running to first base she did the unexpected. A beautiful cartwheel. Then without breaking stride she continued on to first base. You canât watch this without smiling.
This week I am inviting you to follow the lead of this playful six year old girl. Doing the unexpected is a great way to build connection within your family and bring some joy into your relationships. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking.
Get creative. Break old patterns. Stretch your comfort zone.
Remember - A change in perspective ⊠changes everything.
Here is your challenge. At least once over the next week do something unexpected for your spouse and your children.

Does your teenager ever get anxious before a big test?
Or how about the week or two leading up to the start of a new school year ⊠are they a little on edge? Are they not their usual selves? This was certainly the case for my youngest daughter.
What about the morning of a big presentation in one of their classes? Do they refuse to eat breakfast and complain about an upset stomach?
How about social situations? Does your teenager get really uncomfortable or avoid them?
Truth be told we all experience anxiety at some level. For me back when I was in school one of my biggest fears was being called on in class or a group discussion. I should qualify this. I was good with being called on to answer a question with a specific answer. For example: What is the capital of Indiana ? It was the questions that required me to share my thoughts or opinion that freaked me out. Questions like. What did you think the author was trying to say in this poem? I would feel exposed or vulnerable in these moments.
But now I stand up in front of people and share my ideas and thoughts all of the time. Now I am not going to lie. There are still some nerves before I start a talk. But over the years I have learned strategies for overcoming this fear and more importantly I have developed a new mindset that prevents the anxiety from ever starting in the first place.
This is the stuff I wish someone would have shared with me when I was a teenager.
This is part 1 of a 7 part series - How to help your teenager get beyond their anxiety.
Over the next 7 posts we will start by exploring the different types of anxiety and what causes them. Next, we'll talk about strategies that can help you and your teenager get past anxiety in the moment⊠when you are feeling it. Then we will wrap up this series with some strategies for preventing anxiety so that you and your teenager can be their absolute best.
