Josh and Craig are joined by writer and producer Gloria CalderĂłn Kellett to discuss âHow I Met Everyone Else,â one of the most mythology-rich episodes of the series. Gloria shares the origins of fan-favorite ideas like Blah Blah, the sandwich euphemism, the Hot/Crazy Scale, and the various âhow we metâ stories that flesh out the gangâs shared history. The conversation explores the episodeâs use of Ted as an unreliable narrator, the challenge of building authentic long-term relationships through Marshall and Lily, and the many real-life experiences that inspired the showâs stories. They also reminisce about working with future filmmaking superstar Phil Lord, Abby Spencerâs memorable guest appearance, the early days of the writersâ room, and how HIMYM captured a generationâs experiences with friendship, dating, and growing up. The episode closes with a heartfelt listener letter about a mother who bonded with her sons through the show over many years, underscoring the lasting emotional impact of both the series and the podcast.

Josh and Craig revisit Season 3âs âLittle Boys,â written by Courtney Kang, and talk about Tedâs unusually confident single-guy era, Barneyâs wildly manipulative plan to outplay Ted, and Robinâs hysterical fear of children while dating a dad from Lilyâs kindergarten class. They spend a lot of time praising Cobie Smuldersâ growing comedic confidence, point out hidden Ghostbusters references in the episode, laugh about accidentally mentioning subprime lenders before the 2008 financial crash, and reflect on the awkwardness of acting and performing comedy on set. The episode ends with a heartfelt letter from a fan who explains how How I Met Your Mother helped her through loneliness, college, heartbreak, and eventually finding love.

This Instagram Live bonus episode of How We Made Your Mother features Josh Radnor answering fan questions with producer Alek Lev. Josh reflects on rediscovering the show while rewatching it with his wife Jordana, including how his relationship with fans has changed now that he sees the series more from their perspective. They also talk about specific behind-the-scenes detailsâlike the blue French horn prop that Josh kept from the setâand discuss memorable guest stars such as Martin Short. The conversation ranges widely, touching on music used in the show (including Belle and Sebastian and Iggy Pop), the origin of the rewatch podcast, advice about breaking into film and television today, and how How I Met Your Mother has helped viewers through difficult moments in their lives. The episode closes with a more philosophical discussion about memory, nostalgia, and how revisiting the show years later reveals new meaning in both the series and the lives of the people who made it.

Josh and Craig are joined by Dave Hemmingson to revisit âThird Wheel,â the Season 3 fan-favorite where newly single Ted unexpectedly finds himself navigating the possibility of a threesome with returning guest stars Busy Philipps and Danica McKellar. Dave talks about joining the writersâ room during a pivotal moment for the series, helping launch the âfree-range Tedâ era after the Robin breakup, and crafting the episodeâs frantic, almost real-time energy inspired by farce and physical comedy. The group digs into Barneyâs surprising vulnerability, Marshall and Lilyâs enthusiastic âmission controlâ support of Tedâs big night, the origins of the tramp stamp storyline, and whether Ted actually âwon the belt.â Along the way, they reflect on why the episode still works: balancing absurd comedy, emotional honesty, and one of the weirdly sweetest stories HIMYM ever told.

Josh and Craig talk about âWeâre Not From Here,â the second half of the Gael mini-arc, and how the episode feels a little more like a classic sitcom with three separate storylines: Robin trying to make a vacation romance work in real life, Ted and Barney pretending to be tourists to pick up women, and Marshall freaking out over Lilyâs âdeath letter.â They laugh a lot about Jason Segelâs completely committed insanity, Robin almost pulling a gun on people, Ted passionately defending New York over New Jersey, and how absurdly old they made Marshall and Lily look in the 2029 flash-forward. They also talk about Chris Harrisâ writing style, Enrique Iglesiasâ guest spot, and how Ted in early Season 3 is trying really hard to become less âromantic Tedâ after the breakup. The episode ends with a really sweet surprise letter from producer Emily Blumberg about growing up loving HIMYM and eventually winding up working on the podcast.

On another very special Bonus Episode of HWMYM, weâre bringing you a table read of Gimme Five, a second pilot that Craig and Carter (wrote not long after HIMYM ended). And once again, this pilot never got made (until now!). They co-wrote this pilot with legendary writer Peter Tolan, whose credits include The Larry Sanders Show, Rescue Me, Analyze This, Analyze That, and many more.
Here's the log line: It's 1985, and Gimme Five is the number two family sitcom in America. But behind the scenes of this feel-good show is a dysfunctional workplace family on the verge of self-destruction. Showrunner Cliff McConnell must somehow keep it together and keep being funny in the midst of his newborn son's health crisis.
Sharp, outrageous, and wildly funny, Gimme Five gives a behind-the-scenes look at comedy writing that feels both absurd and strangely authentic. It may also be one of the funniest pilots ever featured on Dead Pilots Society.
Major Content Warning *salute* â Definitely think twice about listening to this one with small children in the room. You may hear something that offends you early on in this pilot, but please stick with it.
Our cast for the show includes Taran Killam (SNL, High Potential, Stumble), Chris Diamantopoulos (Beavis and Butthead, Silicon Valley), Scott Foley (Scandal, Scream 7), Dallas Goldtooth (Reservation Dogs), Tami Sagher (Inside Amy Schumer), Chris DiStefano (stand up), James Urbaniak (Venture Brothers), Isabella Gomez (One Day at a Time, Shrinking), Cyrina Fiallo (High Potential, 911 Lonestar), Alyssa Limperis (What We Do In the Shadows), Burl Moseley (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend).

Josh and Craig kick off Season 3 of How We Made Your Mother by revisiting âWait For It,â while also reflecting on the emotionally massive hiatus between Seasons 2 and 3 of How I Met Your Mother. Craig opens up about the birth of his son Elliot and the terrifying medical challenges their family faced, while Josh talks about traveling to Brazil and Colombia, working with ayahuasca, quitting drinking, and returning to the show feeling transformed. From there, they dive into the episode itself: Tedâs breakup beard, the âwinning the breakupâ dynamic with Robin, Enrique Iglesias as Gael, the infamous butterfly tramp stamp, blackout Ted behavior, and how Season 3 marked a deliberate attempt to shake up Tedâs character beyond the hopeless romantic archetype. They also discuss Jason Segelâs fearless comedy instincts, behind-the-scenes stories about wardrobe, product placement (âthe Cadillac of rebound guysâ), the evolution of terms like âtramp stampâ and âcougar,â and why the Ted/Robin apartment-door argument remains one of Joshâs favorite scenes in the series. The episode closes with a heartfelt message from former production coordinator Kelly about joining the show during Season 3, plus a moving fan letter from a public health nurse who explains how both HIMYM and the podcast have become a source of comfort and hope in her life.

On this very special Bonus Episode of HWMYM, weâre bringing you a table read of New York Mythological, a pilot that Craig and Carter wrote and sold to CBS sometime around 2015. Unfortunately, this one never got made. But weâve got the next best thing for you here.
The log line for New York Mythological - A new arrival joins the team at a museum devoted to exploring supernatural and paranormal phenomena in New York City.
With kind of a How I Met Your Mother meets Ghostbusters feel, the pilot features a fantastic cast featuring Isabella Gomez (One Day at a Time, Shrinking), Devon Bostick (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Crime 101), Alyssa Limperis (What We Do In the Shadows), Josh Fadem (The Lowdown, American Dad), Kal Penn (Harold and Kumar, Industry) Cyrina Fiallo (HIgh Potential, 911 Lonestar), Tami Sagher (Inside Amy Schumer).

This Instagram Live bonus episode of How We Made Your Mother features Josh Radnor and Craig Thomas answering fan questions and sharing behind-the-scenes stories from How I Met Your Mother. Early in the conversation they pause to remember James Van Der Beek, reflecting on his fearless, against-type performance in âSandcastles in the Sandâ and how generous and grounded he was when guest-starring on the show. The discussion then turns to production detailsâlike how the crew created the showâs big rain scenes on the Fox lot using massive water rigs and blackout tarps to simulate a New York storm in sunny Los Angeles. Craig also talks about how season two intentionally reshuffled the charactersâTed and Robin as a couple, Marshall newly single, and Barney without his wingmanâwhich opened up new stories and dynamics. Along the way they field lighter questions about things like whether someone could open a real-life bar called Puzzles, and they explain how the podcast came together after Josh started rewatching the series with his wife Jordana and decided to turn the experience into a full rewatch show with producer Alek Lev.

This special How We Made Your Mother Instagram Live episode features producer Alek Lev in conversation with Craig Thomas, co-creator of How I Met Your Mother, centered on Craigâs novel Thatâs Not How It Happened. Over an intimate, wide-ranging 54-minute discussion, Craig unpacks the personal origins of the bookâdrawing from his experience parenting a son with a disabilityâwhile exploring language, representation, and the loneliness parents often feel navigating disability without a shared vocabulary or community. The conversation traces how those lived experiences intersected with his time on HIMYM, why he ultimately chose not to mirror his real life directly through Marshall and Lily, and how years of frustration trying to tell disability-centered stories in Hollywood led him to write a novel instead. Craig dives into the bookâs multi-perspective, non-linear structure (very much in the HIMYM storytelling DNA), his commitment to avoiding both âinspiration pornâ and tragedy narratives, and his goal of making a story about disability that is genuinely funny, human, and messy. Along the way, audience questions spark candid reflections on friendship, guilt, advocacy, inclusion, creative responsibility, and the idea that every characterâand every personâis standing on some kind of life âcliff.â The live concludes with gratitude to the disability community, readers who felt seen by the book, and the shared hope that telling these stories helps people stay connected instead of pulling away.

This February 4 Instagram Live episode of How We Made Your Mother brings together Josh Radnor, Craig Thomas, and producer Alek Lev for an expansive, warm, and frequently hilarious conversation that doubles as a love letter to the show, the podcast, and the community thatâs grown around both. Broadcasting at a new midday time to reach international fans, the trio talk about why they started the podcast, how listener voice notes and letters have become its emotional core, and what itâs been like revisiting How I Met Your Mother nearly two decades later. Topics range from New York winters, unrealistic sitcom apartments, long-term storytelling payoffs and accidental continuity errors, to Craigâs emotional reflections on the end of The Late Show legacy after his formative years writing for Late Show with David Letterman. Josh opens up about rediscovering pride in the series after years of distance, becoming a fan of the show himself, and how the podcast has softened his relationship with Ted Mosby and the audience. The group shares behind-the-scenes stories about the origins of running jokes like the Major General salute, the ripple effects of tiny life choices, fan proposals sparked by the podcast, and the optimism behind the phrase âPeople Will Dance,â which may soon become merch. Along the way they shout out fans tuning in from around the world, reflect on musicâs role in the show (and Joshâs late-in-life songwriting journey), and close on the idea that HIMYM now belongs to its viewers as much as its creatorsâsomething all three clearly cherish.

This Instagram Live episode of How We Made Your Mother features Josh Radnor, Craig Thomas, and producer Alek Lev in a relaxed, funny, and reflective conversation about revisiting the first two seasons of How I Met Your Mother nearly 20 years later. They talk about learning to be kinder to their younger selves, favorite memories from set (including cozy breakfast scenes, hair-and-makeup miracles, and moments when the scale of the show suddenly felt magical), the grind behind the joy, and why struggle is part of meaningful creative work. Fan questions spark stories about deleted scenes, bloopers, iconic supporting characters (Ranjit, Sandy Rivers, Stuart, Brad), musicâs central role in the show and their lives, tattoos inspired by HIMYM, advice for aspiring actors and writers, and Craigâs journey writing his novel Thatâs Not How It Happened. The trio also welcome listeners discovering the podcast for the first time, celebrate its global audience, shout out the Office Ladies Network, and invite fans to keep the conversation going through letters, voice notes, and future bonus episodes.

Josh and Craig break down How I Met Your Mother Season 2, Episode 21, âSomething Borrowed,â the chaotic first half of Marshall and Lilyâs wedding finale. They revisit how the episode leans into the idea that every element of Lilyâs carefully planned wedding begins to unravelâfrom Marshall accidentally shaving a reverse mohawk into his hair to Scooter showing up determined to stop the ceremony. The hosts talk about the technical side of filming Jason Segelâs shaving scene (and how hard it was for everyone not to break), the escalating farce that pushes the wedding off course, and the way the writers used these disasters to set up the emotional payoff of the finale. They also reflect on the showâs growing commitment to serialized storytelling, planting clues and callbacks that reward long-time viewers while still delivering big comedy moments, and how the imperfect, improvised version of the wedding ultimately reinforces one of the showâs core themes: the moments that go wrong are often the ones that reveal what really matters.

Josh and Craig continue their conversation with Neil Patrick Harris, reflecting on their working dynamic during How I Met Your Mother and how Barney and Tedâs very different roles on the show sometimes created a strange but productive tension between the actors. They talk candidly about early insecurities, the pressure of carrying different storytelling responsibilitiesâJosh often delivering the emotional core while Neil chased the biggest laughsâand how that contrast ultimately helped create the chemistry that defined the show. The discussion then shifts to the Season 2 episode âShowdown,â including Barneyâs obsession with The Price Is Right, Tedâs struggle to write a best-man speech for Marshall, and memorable bits like Marshallâs belief in ghosts, Lily and Marshallâs intense co-dependence, and the absurd sincerity of Barney asking Bob Barker if heâs proud of him. Along the way they swap behind-the-scenes memoriesâfrom Neilâs obsessive continuity tricks for the editors to subtle moments that planted the seeds for Barney and Robinâand reflect on how, years later, they can finally look back at the experience with perspective, affection, and a deeper understanding of what each of them was bringing to the show.

Josh and Craig are joined by Neil Patrick Harris to revisit How I Met Your Mother Season 2âs âShowdown,â the episode where Barney appears on The Price Is Right believing that host Bob Barker might be his father. Neil reflects on the lasting cultural impact of Barney Stinson, the freedom the showâs unusual hybrid format gave actors to experiment with comedy, and the physical-comedy influencesâfrom Buster Keaton to Cirque du Soleilâthat shaped his performance. The conversation dives into Barneyâs mix of bravado and vulnerability, how the writers gradually revealed the emotional core beneath the suit, and why the characterâs deep loyalty to his friends often drove the story more than his playboy antics. They also share memories of filming on the real Price Is Right set, discuss how the showâs early âon the bubbleâ years kept everyone creatively hungry, and explore the idea that the heightened moments of the series may represent Tedâs exaggerated memories rather than literal reality. And we end on HWMYMâs first⊠cliffhanger!
