On this edition of the Husker Doc Talk Podcast, Travis Justice and Dr. Rob Zatechka delve into the action-packed first round of the college football playoffs. While the initial four games didn’t quite deliver the edge-of-your-seat drama fans might have hoped for, they still offered plenty of excitement. The games highlighted the unique energy that comes with home-field advantage, which created electric atmospheres in every matchup. This, in turn, made a compelling case for playoff expansion, raising questions about how the format could evolve to include even more teams and intensify the competition in future seasons.
The conversation then shifts focus to Nebraska’s upcoming bowl game as the Huskers gear up for the Pinstripe Bowl against Boston College. Travis and Dr. Rob dive deep into the matchup, analyzing how the Huskers stack up against BC. They examine Nebraska’s strengths and weaknesses, the challenges posed by Boston College, and the potential strategies the Huskers might employ to secure a victory. With new defensive assistant coaches on staff, the discussion also explores how these recent additions will adapt and integrate their strategies with the players in such a short time frame. Will these coaches be able to make an immediate impact, or will the limited preparation time be a hurdle Nebraska can’t overcome?
Shifting gears, Travis and Dr. Rob turn their attention to an ongoing legal battle that could significantly impact junior college athletes and their eligibility in NCAA sports. A case in Tennessee has resulted in a temporary injunction that challenges existing rules and could pave the way for junior college transfers to have up to four full years of playing time when they join a four-year institution. This development exposes yet another area where the NCAA has fallen short in addressing critical eligibility issues. The duo discusses the potential ripple effects of this ruling, including how it might reshape the landscape of college sports, especially for programs that rely heavily on junior college transfers.

Episode 38 of the Husker Doc Talk Podcast dives into a packed agenda, highlighting some of the biggest headlines in Nebraska football and the broader college football landscape. Travis Justice and Dr. Rob Zatechka kick things off by dissecting Nebraska’s decision to promote John Butler to Defensive Coordinator. They analyze what this move means for the program, the defense's future direction, and Butler’s potential to elevate the Blackshirts in the ever-competitive Big Ten.
Next, they tackle the Transfer Portal frenzy, exploring its implications for Nebraska and how the Huskers can strategically navigate this new era of college football. With the 2025 Nebraska football schedule recently announced, Travis and Dr. Rob offer their insights on key matchups, challenges ahead, and how the team is shaping up for the seasons to come.
But the conversation doesn’t stop in Lincoln. The duo focuses on the somewhat shocking news of Bill Belichick’s move to North Carolina, discussing how his NFL expertise might translate to the college game and what this means for a sport already during other coaching changes. They also take a broader look at coaching shakeups nationwide and how these moves reshape the competitive landscape.

Statistically, Nebraska dominated Iowa. However, as we found out on Black Friday, the final score is the only thing that matters: Iowa 13, Nebraska 10.
In this edition of the Husker Doc Talk Podcast, Dr. Rob Zatechka discusses the mental side of the game, which is just as important as the physical part. Dr. Rob discusses with Travis Justice that the pregame handshake, or lack thereof, indicated that the Huskers were not ready for the little things it takes to win a game.
Did the mind games before the game play a part in the final outcome? There's no way to prove it, but there's no way to disprove it either.
Last Friday's Nebraska and Iowa game was just an appetizer in a wild weekend of rivalry week. The Huskers now wait to see who they will play in a bowl game while Penn State and Oregon battle for the Big 10 Championship, and we wait for the official college football playoff bracket to be set.

It's a win worth storming the field for. Nebraska 44, Wisconsin 25. Nebraska improves to 6-5 on the season and is bowl eligible for the first time since 2016.
On this edition of the Husker Doc Talk Podcast, Travis Justice and former Husker All-American Dr. Rob Zatechka break down Nebraska's win over Wisconsin. The Big Red's dominating offensive performance was highlighted by 473 yards of offense and excelling in the red zone, 7-7, and five touchdowns. The Huskers used a balanced offensive attack to beat the Badgers, racking up 473 total yards, including 180 yards on the ground. Some could argue that it was the best offensive performance for the Huskers this season.
There is one more game left in the season, and Nebraska has another shot at bettering its record. The Huskers are at Iowa, a night game on Black Friday. The Hawkeyes are coming off a 29-13 win over Maryland, in which they ran the ball for 268 yards on 58 carries. Iowa has won nine of the last eleven match-ups in the series, with the last six one-score games. Nebraska did win the last time they played in Iowa City, 24-17 in 2022.
Will the win over Wisconsin be enough to lift a heavy weight off the Huskers' shoulders and let them let loose against Iowa, or will it be another barn-burner border war? Dr. Rob and Travis give their thoughts.

Nebraska's trip to Los Angeles ended in heartbreak, falling to USC 28-20 in a nail-biter. But did the officials miss a game-changing call on the final play? Travis Justice and Dr. Rob Zatechka break down the controversial no-call for pass interference and how it impacted the outcome.
The conversation doesn’t stop there. Should the Huskers have run the ball more against the Trojans after logging only 25 rushing attempts? And how did Dana Holgerson fare in his debut as Nebraska’s Offensive Coordinator?
With bowl eligibility still hanging in the balance and two games left—Wisconsin on Saturday and Iowa on Black Friday—there’s no shortage of drama as the Huskers fight to extend their season. Don’t miss this week’s deep dive into the state of Nebraska football!

Matt Rhule isn't messing around. He knows he has to win at Nebraska, and his latest move shows how important it is for the Huskers to get to a bowl game this season!
Less than a week after hiring for West Virginia and Houston Head Coach Dana Holgorsen as an "offensive consultant," Rhule hands Holgorsen the keys to the offense and says drive as fast as possible!
Former OC Marcus Satterfield will remain on the staff for at least the rest of the season; after that, who knows?
Travis Justice and Dr. Rob Zatechka discuss the change in this Husker Doc Talk Podcast edition. Why now? Well, it's because Nebraska's offense has stalled out. The Huskers rank 96th nationally in total yards and 99th nationally in points scored.
The Huskers will be looking for yards, points, and a win this weekend at USC. The Trojans have made their own change: a new starting quarterback. Jayden Maiava, who transferred from UNLV, is a dual-threat quarterback who is also trying to get USC to a bowl game and get Lincoln Riley off the Los Angeles hot seat.

Nebraska suffered a tough loss, which was the worst of the season: UCLA 27, Nebraska 20. Despite the home-field advantage and coming off a stellar performance against Ohio State, the Huskers needed this win to secure their first bowl appearance since 2016. But it all unraveled, leaving a hopeful fan base stunned and frustrated in their quest for relevancy.
In this edition of the Husker Doc Talk Podcast, Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice dive deep into the impact of this loss on Nebraska’s season and explore what steps the program should take moving forward.
One of the most surprising aspects was Nebraska's defense against the run. Despite ranking as one of the nation's top rush defenses, the Huskers allowed UCLA—statistically one of the worst rushing teams in the country—to rack up 139 yards on the ground, including several big runs that proved costly in critical moments.
So, does Nebraska have a coaching issue? A culture issue? A talent issue? One thing is clear: they have an issue with winning games. If the Huskers hope to make a bowl game, they need answers fast. But it won’t be easy with only three games left.
The team faces another off week, giving them extra time to prepare for USC. However, as earlier in the season showed, a bye week hasn't necessarily benefited the Huskers. Dr. Rob and Travis discuss.

Doctor Rob upset many fans after Nebraska's close loss to Ohio State. He gave the Nebraska special teams an F+ despite the Huskers finding a field goal kicker who can make field goals with some distance.
In this edition of the Husker Doc Talk Podcast, Dr. Rob explains his grade. While the field goals are nice, other aspects of special teams execution leave him with plenty of room for worry.
One thing is for sure: the Huskers looked a lot better against Ohio State. In fact, they looked maybe the best they have looked all year. The defense slowed Ohio State's skill position players. The offense ran the ball against a Buckeye defense that holds teams below 100 yards a game on the ground.
The officiating in the Ohio State game wasn't the best. It should never be an excuse, but a call or non-call here and there can have a major impact on the game. What can be done to fix officiating errors and make calls more accurate? Travis and Dr. Rob discuss some ideas.
UCLA comes to Lincoln on Saturday. The Bruins have had a brutal schedule, losing to three top-10 teams. They are coming off a bye week and, before that, a win at Rutgers. The Bruins aren't a bad team, but they aren't great, either. On paper, UCLA will be the "easiest" game left on the schedule for Nebraska, and a win against the Bruins will make Nebraska bowl-eligible for the first time since 2016. Dr. Rob and Travis break down the next game and take a high-level look at the remaining games on the schedule.

It was a beatdown of epic proportions that the Huskers did not see coming. Indiana 56, Nebraska 7.
Outcoached, outplayed, out everything! This is a reminder that just when you think things are going well, you may not be as good as you think.
In this Husker Doc Talk Podcast edition, Travis Justice and Dr. Rob Zatechka discuss all four game phases in which Nebraska failed.
CoachingOffenseDefenseSpecial TeamsWhat makes the blowout loss to Indiana (one of the top 10 worst in Nebraska history) is that the Huskers had plenty of time to prepare for the Hoosiers. It looked like Nebraska took two weeks off instead of practicing.
And if they were looking past the Hoosiers to get to Ohio State, that was a significant mistake. Speaking of the Buckeyes, they are up next for Nebraska, and playing at the Horse Shoe means there is a serious possibility of another ass-kicking. Ohio State is ranked fourth in the Country and didn't play last week. The Buckeyes will be itching to get back on the field because last time out, they lost to now-number one Oregon.
When the season is over, Matt Rhule must examine his coaching staff, specifically on special teams and offense. There are five games left with no guaranteed wins and one sure loss (Ohio State), so buckle up for what could be an emotional rollercoaster.

The Huskers enjoyed a week off watching what might have been the best week in college football so far this season. Sitting out a week should be more than enough motivation for Nebraska as it travels to Indiana, hoping to upset the unbeaten and 16th-ranked Hoosiers.
Travis Justice and Dr. Rob Zatechka take a deep dive into the game. Let's make one thing abundantly clear: yes, Indiana is unbeaten. However, the Hoosiers have yet to play any significant team. Nebraska will be its most formidable opponent to date.
That's not to say Indiana doesn't have firepower; it does! The Hoosiers average almost 48 points per game and 515 yards per game. They will spread the field and pass a lot, led by quarterback Kurtis Rourke. The fifth-year senior is completing almost 74% of his passes and has 14 touchdowns and just two interceptions.
But don't look past the Indiana rushing attack. It averages 200 yards a game on the ground and picks up an impressive 5.1 yards per carry.
Indiana's defensive numbers look solid on paper, but let's be real—the schedule is weak! Indiana hasn't played a team with a record above .500, and in Big 10 play, UCLA, Maryland, and Northwestern have a combined conference record of 1-7.
This game is getting some national attention as Fox Big Noon Kickoff will do its pregame show from Bloomington, where it is also Homecoming.
Does all this add up to a Nebraska win and the Huskers becoming bowl-eligible? Find out what Travis and Dr. Rob think.

Ugly wins are still wins. Nebraska's 14-7 win over Rutgers on Saturday was anything but picture-perfect, but who cares!
The Huskers are now 5-1 on the season, just the second time they've reached that milestone in the last ten years. They have never lost to Rutgers, a perfect 7-0 against the Scarlet Knights.
Nebraska continues to excel on defense. They have held four of their first five opponents to 10 or fewer points and their last 13 opponents to under 400 yards of total offense; it's been over 15 years since they could say that.
The offense struggled against Rutgers, with 261 total yards, and quarterback Dylan Raiola had what would be considered his worst game at Nebraska.
It's a perfect time for a week off. Nebraska has a bye next week before resuming play against currently unbeaten Indiana and then number two Ohio State.
Travis Justice and Dr. Rob Zatechka discuss the Rutgers win and the road ahead for the Huskers in this Husker Doc Talk Podcast edition.

28-7 is an impressive win when you look at the scoreboard. However, let's not forget that the Huskers and Boilermakers were scoreless at halftime. You can look at bad special teams' execution on the kicking game: one missed field goal and two blocks holding Nebraska back from really blowing out Purdue.
On this edition of the Husker Doc Talk Podcast. Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice dive into the latest Nebraska win. Fans will tell you officiating was horrible. Dr. Rob has a different take when it comes to the yellow hankies. Sure, there were a couple of bad calls, but what we watched against Purdue was two teams getting penalized a lot. Meaning the officials were consistent. You may think they were consistently wrong, but it's more than that. Do you want an officiating crew that lets teams play or a crew that calls everything by the book? Both have their advantages and disadvantages.
There were many good things to take away from the Purdue game. Dylan Raiola is as consistent as ever. The Defense held the Boilermakers to 50 yards rushing. Also, with a pick-six, John Bullock moved Nebraska to +5 on the season in turnover margin. Nebraska has outscored opponents 31-0 in points off turnovers this season.
Nebraska's next game is against Rutgers at 3:00 PM on Saturday. The Scarlet Knights are unbeaten after beating Washington last Friday and are off to their best start since joining the Big 10 Conference. Rutgers is well-coached and has an identity they stick to. It will be a challenging game for Nebraska but winnable. Dr. Rob gives his thoughts on the next game.

What would Frank Solich want to be if he didn't start coaching football in 1966? What two games when he was the coach at Nebraska haunt him the most? You will find answers to these questions on the latest Husker Doc Talk Podcast with Travis Justice and Dr. Rob Zatechka.
Frank Solich had the impossible job of replacing Tom Osborne in 1998. He turned the impossible into possible, winning the Big 12 title in 1999 (he should have won the National Championship) and the Big 12 North Division crowns in 2000 and 2001.
At Nebraska, Solich coached 13 First-Team All-Americans, 28 First-Team All-Conference Players, a Heisman Trophy Winner, and a Campbell Trophy winner (really smart and really good players. Dr. Rob won the Campbell Trophy).
That idiot Athletic Director Steve Pederson fired Solich after the 2003 season. He finished his Nebraska Head Coaching career with a 58-19 record.
From 2005 through 2020, Solich coached Ohio University. He is the winningest coach in school and Mid-American Conference history.
Solich was slow to return to Nebraska, as old wounds are hard to heal. But enough time has passed that he was back for the 2023 Spring Game and the Colorado game this season.
Frank will officially be inducted into the College Football Hall-of-Fame in December.

Husker Nation was hit with a hefty dose of reality last Friday. On the night of the 400th consecutive sellout at Memorial Stadium, Nebraska loses the Big Ten opener to Illinois in overtime. 31-24 the final. It's the first time Nebraska has lost a Big Ten Conference opener at home.
Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice don't hold back in this Husker Doc Talk Podcast edition.
Matt Rhule Was Out-CoachedThe Defense Sucked and Was UndisciplinedThe Offense Couldn't Find A Running GameThe Team Was Not Mentally Prepared for PrimetimeAll of this is a surprise, considering the momentum the Huskers had been building in the first three weeks of the season. Maybe we should have seen it coming based on recent history. Nebraska has lost eight straight overtime games. It's like they didn't even show up in the extra period against the Illini.
Matt Rhule is now 2-20 all-time against teams ranked in the top 25, including 14 straight. Nebraska has lost 25 straight games against ranked teams dating back to 2016.
What did we learn? Nebraska has come so far but still has a long way to go. Maybe this is a good time to get away from Lincoln. After four straight home games, Nebraska is at Purdue on Saturday. The Boilermakers are bad, 1-2 on the season after getting beat by Oregon State last weekend. It's a game the Huskers should win, but then again, we thought the same thing against Illinois.

Nebraska improves to 3-0 on the season and moves up one spot to number 22 in the latest Associated Press College Football Poll, its highest poll position since 2016.
Still, Dr. Rob Zatechka gives the Huskers an incomplete on his report card for the game against Northern Iowa, citing [specific reasons for the incomplete grade]. Despite the big win, Dr. Rob says there is a lot to clean up, like running game dominance and better tackling, as they head into conference play.
In this edition of the Husker Doc Talk Podcast, Dr. Rob and Travis Justice break down the report card and ask if there is a reason for concern as the Huskers prepare for a Friday night lights game against number 23 Illinois. Don't get Dr. Ro wrong; the Huskers were dominant against the Panthers, averaging over 8 yards per play while running just 48 offensive plays.
Northern Iowa did control the clock against Nebraska, dominating the time of possession by 17 minutes. The Panthers were able to rush for 139 yards.
The Huskers are gearing up for a challenging Big 10 opener against Illinois. The Illini, who have also improved to 3-0, are not to be underestimated. With a 30-9 win over Central Michigan, they have shown their strength. Nebraska will have to be at their best to stop Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer, who was 19-29 for 242 yards and two touchdowns. This game promises to be an exciting and competitive match-up. The Huskers will have to stop an Illinois offense that uses lots of motion on offense mixed with RPO (Run-Pass-Option).

Great Crowd. Great Atmosphere. Great Game. The Huskers smoked Colorado 28-10 to improve to 2-0 on the season and look for bigger and better things in the 2024 Season.
On this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast, Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice dive deep into the win over the Buffs. One thing Dr. Rob likes so far this season is the offensive line pushing the line of scrimmage ahead four to five yards on rushing plays. And the stable of the runningbacks the Huskers have in their attack.
But let's also give some credit to the Nebraska defense. Getting six sacks against Colorado and holding Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter in check during prime time. (See what we did there?)
Up next is Northern Iowa. It's a game Nebraska should win. But don't look past the Patherns, as they are a solid FCS team, and coming off an emotional win against Colorado, this sets up to be a classic trap or letdown game.

Nebraska 40 UTEP 7. The Huskers won their season opener for the first time since 2019. It is an impressive start for a team looking to end the longest bowl drought in the Power 4. It is also an impressive start for Dylan Raiola, who is just the second true freshman in Nebraska history to start the season opener.
On this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast, Travis Justice and Dr. Rob Zatechka dive deep into the victory that was one of the most impressive the Huskers have had in years. In short, Nebraska did what it was supposed to do: beat an inferior team in an inferior conference. However, the victory was not perfect, and Dr. Rob explains what he would like to see improve if they want to take the next step and contend for a Big 10 Title. That might be putting the cart before the horse, but the end game is to win a conference title.
Colorado is next for the Huskers. Last Thursday, the Buffs knocked off North Dakota State using a one-dimensional offense (passing game). Dr. Rob makes no bones about it: He doesn't like Colorado, its team, its fans, or anything else. He explains why. Nebraska clearly looks like the better team at this point, but there are still several reasons (athletic players) to be worried about this game.

The long wait is over! The Huskers' season kicks off on Saturday against UTEP. This is the first meeting between the Miners and Nebraska. Travis Justice and Dr. Rob Zatechka take a deep dive into the match-up on this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast.
Nebraska is opening the season at home for the first time since 2019. The Huskers are 12-0 at home against non-conference teams in the month of August and 10-0 when at Memorial Stadium in August. That unbeaten streak should stay in tack against a UTEP team coming to Lincoln with a new head coach and a team that has to replace almost all of its offensive production from a year ago and lost its top defensive player.
All eyes will be on Huskers Quarterback Dylan Raiola, who will become just the second true freshman in Nebraska history to start the season under center. The last was Adrian Martinez. There's been a lot of hype around Raiola. Will he live up to the expectations? Dr. Rob gives his expert opinion.
Dr. Rob also explains what a player goes through as they prepare to take the field for the first time and shares a hilarious story about his first time out of the tunnel as a red-shirt freshman.
Make sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel. You can find past episodes and our weekly show, Behind The Point Spread. Scott Spreitzer joins us for the third year in a row as we take a gambler's look at some of the top college football games of the week, including Nebraska's showdown with UTEP.

The start of the college football season for Nebraska is a little over a week away, and the most significant decision of 2024 for Matt Ruhle has been made. Dylan Raiola has officially been named the starting quarterback for the season opener against UTEP.
On this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast, Travis Justice and Dr. Rob Zatechka discuss the official announcement and how it wasn't that big of news; instead, it was a foregone conclusion. So, how will the true freshman be judged as a success? In the short term, get Nebraska back to a bowl game. In the long run, it's the playoffs or bust riding on the back of Raiola.
Nebraska will not be wearing alternate uniforms this season. For some odd reason, uniforms are a hot topic of conversation among fans. What's the big deal? The Big Red "N" on the helmet is classic, and the Husker's traditional uniforms are some of the most recognizable in college football. We always hear that recruits and players like the style and flash of alternate uniforms. Do you know what they like better? Winning! Let's start there, and everything will take care of itself.
Teams are getting creative when it comes to raising money for NIL. Oklahoma State is putting a QR code on its helmet. Former Nebraska assistant Bill Busch advocates placing a player's Venmo account on the scoreboard after a big play so fans can reward him. You will see a lot of trial, error, and success when it comes to NIL's creativity. Is this a good thing? Travis and Dr. Rob dive deep into the subject.
