If you want to start a rousing debate about how to reduce the number of identity crime victims, just mention the use of biometrics as a way of proving you are who you claim to be. With identity crimes committed using stolen personal information on the rise, it’s a hot topic that often pits privacy against security.

Welcome back to the Identity Theft Resource Center’s Weekly Breach Breakdown – supported by Sentilink. I’m James Lee, the ITRC’s COO and this is the episode for Friday the 13th of September, 2024.
Each week on this podcast, we look at the most recent events and trends related to data security and privacy. Let’s start this episode with an apology to all of you who suffer from Triskaidekaphobia. That’s the fear of the number 13. That’s also why we think of Friday the 13th as a bad luck day. It’s a notion that goes all the way back to the Middle Ages in Europe. But we’re here today to talk about another long-followed practice: Don’t shoot the messenger.

Welcome to the Identity Theft Resource Center's (ITRC) Weekly Breach Breakdown for September 6, 2024. I'm Timothy Walden. Thanks to SentiLink for their support of the ITRC and this podcast. Each week on this podcast, we look at the most recent events and trends related to data security and privacy. Today, we'll discuss a scam that's been around for a while but has seen a recent resurgence with a twist: QR code scams and, particularly, the parking meter QR code scam.
Since the dawn of the Internet, links have always been part of the ecosystem. However, they have only recently jumped from our screens onto artwork, walls, stickers, and almost anywhere else in the form of QR codes. QR codes, or quick response codes, are the little black and white squares we've all been asked to take photos of to see the latest restaurant menu. However, recently, they've taken a darker turn.

Welcome to the Fraudian Slip, the Identity Theft Resource Center’s (ITRC) podcast, where we talk about all things identity compromise, crime and fraud that impact people and businesses. Listen on Apple, Google, Spotify, SoundCloud, Audible and Amazon now. Normally, each month, we have a conversation with an expert in the field of identity and data protection, cybersecurity or privacy. This month, we feature a presentation from an identity fraud summit hosted by the ITRC and supported by Socure, highlighting research on how consumers view ID verification.
Identity fraud has become a national security threat, resulting in $50+ billion in losses, with 400+ million victims suffering the fallout every year. As consumers continue to bring the most essential elements of their lives online, from banking to health care to public services, we must treat digital identity as critical national infrastructure. It is time to unmask the complexities of identity and work together to develop trusted identity processes that change the national narrative and put an end to attacks on U.S. consumers and businesses.

Welcome to the Identity Theft Resource Center's Weekly Breach Breakdown for August 2nd, 2024. I'm Alex Achten, Director of Communications & Media Relations of the ITRC. Thanks to Sentilink for supporting the ITRC and this podcast. Each week, we look at the most recent events and trends related to data security and privacy. Today, I am going to talk about two events that you have probably heard about all over the news, and what it ultimately means for our digital footprint.
When you think of footprints, many things come to mind. It may be something inspirational and purposeful. Or it could simply be the thought of someone leaving shoe marks in the living room after not following your house rule of no shoes! A lot of people probably think of the popular song “Footprints in the Sand” by Leona Lewis. No matter what comes to mind, there is another footprint we should probably be paying more attention to: our digital footprint.

We’re rapidly approaching the mid-way point of the year when we publish a look at the data breach trends so far in 2024. That’s not this episode. But what we talk about today will have a big impact on what we do talk about in July. That’s because there are a series of cyberattacks leading to data breaches underway that may turn out to be one of – if not the largest – coordinated, supply chain attack in history.
