  • This is the final in our trilogy of episodes regarding the great battle of

Bannockburn, which happened in June 1314, when the might of England could not defeat the Scottish army.

This is one of the most famous battles in Scottish history.

In our previous episodes we spoke of the leaders of the opposing armies, as well as of the battle itself, in all its glory.

This time we’re talking about the legacy of the Battle of Bannockburn, what did it mean for Scotland, for its victor Robert the Bruce and what can you see from this battlefield today.

Now, let’s hear our interview with Callum Watson, author and historian, who actually works at the site of the Battle of Bannockburn and who recently published a book on the topic with Pen & Sword.

    He also contributed to the Channel 5 documentary ‘Britain’s Lost Battlefields’, where he spoke all things Bannockburn;

AND Callum also has worked as a historical advisor on the ‘Outlaw King’ film for Netflix.

This is one of the most famous battles in Scottish history.

In our previous episode we spoke of the leaders of the opposing armies - Robert the Bruce and Edward II.

You may also remember these kings from the 2018 Netflix film ‘Outlaw King’. Fun fact, both are direct ancestors of Mary Queen of Scots.

In this episode we’ll talk of the battle itself. All the fighting. In the melée of it.

How many horses were there? Was it easy to kill someone in medieval armour? What were the conditions like underfoot?

  • The historian Chris Riley, is back on the podcast, to talk about his favourite historical person, and that is of course, Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Now, She’s famous for being a badass queen of England in the 12th century, and being the mother of both Richard the Lionheart, as well as King John.

She’s also known for her court of love and chivalry. She had influence on the arts, politics and even crusades. In the first of our mini Eleanor series, we spoke about all the stuff  she got up to before she married the king of England at the age of 30. Now, we’re going to talk about everything that followed after, and why she deserves the title ‘The Mother of Europe’.

  • Today we celebrate the recent anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn, which happened on the 23d-24th of June 1314, when the might of England's army could not crush the Scottish rebels. Thus Scotland won, under the command of Robert the Bruce, and Edward II of England suffered a major defeat.

This is one of the most famous battles in Scottish history.

(As a side note, both Robert the Bruce and Edward II are direct ancestors of Mary, Queen of Scots... but that’s beside the point.)

You may remember Robert the Bruce and Edward II from the 2018 Netflix film ‘Outlaw/ King’. Our guest today Callum Watson actually served as one of the historical advisors on the film. He also appeared in Channel 5's documentary on this topic for the 'Britain's Lost Battlefields' programme.

  • Today we are delighted to chat to the author Annie Garthwaite about her new historical fiction novel ‘The King’s Mother’, which has been published by Penguin. Of course, her debut novel 'Cecily' also makes an appearance.

This book features four royal women, all of whom were mothers to the future kings: Marguerite of Anjou, Cecily Neville, Elizabeth Woodville and Margaret Beaufort. Their sons Edward of Westminster, Edward IV, Richard III, Edward V and Henry VII were all at point or another, in line for the crown of England, with the latter emerging victorious at the Battle of Bosworth.

What relationships did these women have? How did the Wars of the Roses affect their friendships, especially after their sons started vying for the throne?

  • Today ‘s guest is our dear friend, the historian Chris Riley, who’s back on the podcast, to talk about his favourite historical person (or may we say his favourite person, period...), and that is of course, Eleanor of Aquitaine. #herstory

Now, She’s famous for being a badass queen of England in the 12th century, and being the mother of both Richard the Lionheart, as well as King John.

She’s also known for her court of love and chivalry. She had influence on the arts, politics and even crusades. But…what was she up to before she married the king of England at the age of 30?

This is what we’re talking about in this episode, Eleanor - the early years.

  • Today we are delighted to chat to the author Danielle Burton about her book ‘Anthony Woodville: Sophisticate or Schemer?’

Anthony was the brother of England’s Queen Elizabeth Woodville, who famously married Edward IV and was mother to the Princes in the Tower, the eldest of which - Edward Prince of Wales was Anthony’s ward for many years.

Tune in and find out more about this sophisticated (or scheming?) person in this, first solo biography.
