Today, weâre talking about something you can use anytime, anywhere: flipping fear into fuel. If you want to turn challenges into courageous choices, youâre in the right place.
The Problem: Why We Freeze at the Edge of Big Decisions
Ever find yourself standing at a crossroads, knowing the bold choice is the right one, but feeling stuck? Thatâs your brain clinging to predictability like a security blanket. Itâs not that you donât have what it takesâitâs that uncertainty freaks your brain out. But hereâs the kicker: YOU are the flashlight in the unknown. You get to light the way.
The Solution: The Inner DJ Remix Hack
Time to shake things up with a little mental DJ-ing. Your brain loves to spin the same old fear-based tracks on repeat.
Hereâs how you remix it:
Next time your brain says, âThis is too scary. I canât do this,â STOP. Out loud (or in your head if youâre in public), say: âREMIX!â and swap the thought. Turn âI canâtâ into âIâm learning how.â Turn âThis is too muchâ into âI can handle hard things.â Make it FUN. Be dramatic. Pretend youâre a DJ scratching a record. Your brain thrives on novelty, and this playful shift rewires your fear response.Journal Prompts to chew on:
Whatâs the current fear-based âtrackâ my brain keeps playing? Whatâs my new âREMIXâ thought? How can I physically embody this shift to make it stick? And if youâre interested in taking one small action right now, you can check out our newest freebie, The 5-Minute Team Commitment Reset here. The Problem: Why Teams Are Not Engaged
Ever feel like your team is running on autopilot? Like theyâre doing just enough but not really bringing their A-game? Itâs not because they donât careâitâs because they donât feel like their ideas matter. Theyâre waiting for permission to be bold. And guess what? You can give it to them.
The Solution: The Out-of-the-Box Improv Hack You Need
In todayâs Snack, weâre shaking things up with a little game called The Fortune Teller Brainstorm.
Have each team member write down a big, wild dream they have for the teamâthink moonshot ideas with no limits. Fold them up, toss them in a bowl, and randomly pull one out. As a group, pretend itâs five years in the future and this dream has already happened. How did you get there? What steps did you take?
Hereâs how it works:Just like that, youâve turned a dream into a game plan. Try this in your next meeting and watch how quickly your team starts thinking big.
Journal Prompts to chew on:
Whatâs the wildest dream I have for my teamâs success? How can I create a fun way to encourage new ideas? Hey, hey, Workday Playdate peeps! Itâs time for your quick bite of leadership wisdomâa little boost of inspiration, energy, and playfulness to brighten your workday.
Today, weâre talking about something we ALL have in common: mistakes. Yep, those cringe-worthy, face-palm moments that keep us up at night. But guess what? Your mistakes arenât just embarrassing bloopers; theyâre your greatest career growth hacks.
So, what do we do? We improvise, using the The "Next Line, Please" Hack.
What it is: In improv, when a scene stalls or someone blanks out, we use a simple trick: we ask for the next line. Instead of panicking, we literally turn to our scene partner and say, "Next line, please?" and they feed us something to work with.
How to use it in real life: Ever been in a meeting where you completely blank on what to say? Or maybe youâre giving a presentation and your brain just short-circuits mid-sentence? Instead of freezing or rambling, do this:
Pause. (Silence feels longer to you than it does to them.) Take a breath. (Gives your brain time to reset.) Ask for the ânext line.â This can be as simple as: "Can you repeat the question?" (Buys time and refocuses.) "Let me gather my thoughts for a second." (Gives permission to pause.) "Thatâs a great pointâcan you expand on that while I process?" (Keeps the conversation flowing.)This breaks the pressure of perfection and allows you to regroup without the awkwardness.
Try it today! When you get stuck, donât force itâjust ask for the next line.

Hey, hey, Workday Playdate peeps! Itâs time for your quick bite of leadership wisdomâa little boost of inspiration, energy, and playfulness to brighten your workday.
Today, weâre talking about the power of play. When was the last time you truly played pretend? Not just faking enthusiasm for Bobâs homemade cookies at the office potluckâbut really letting your imagination run wild like you did as a kid.
That same playful energy can transform your team. Too many teams are stuck in âwork modeâ 24/7. Theyâre afraid of looking silly, stressed, overwhelmed, and holding back ideas. The stats donât lie:
Only 32% of employees are engaged at work. (Gallup) 76% of employees donât feel psychologically safe to take risks. (Harvard Business Review)Your team is playing it safe instead of playing to win. But today, weâre changing that with a simple improv hack: The Superhero Power Exercise.
How it works:
At the start of your next meeting, tell your team: âToday, youâre a superhero with a power that makes you unstoppable at work.â Give them 30 seconds to think of their superhero name and work superpower. Captain Collaborationâuniting teams in a single bound Deadline Destroyerâcrushing timelines before they even start Go around the room (or Zoom) and have each person introduce themselves in character. Bonus points for striking a superhero pose. Why this works:
Breaks the ice and makes people comfortable Taps into creativity and shifts thinking Instantly changes the energy in the roomTry it out and watch your team loosen up and engage. If you liked this, donât miss our next full episode, where weâll dive into why leaders at LinkedIn, Amazon, and Uber Freight use improv for team growth.
Journal Prompts:
When was the last time I allowed myself to play at work? How can I bring more creativity to my team this week? What work superpower would I give myself, and how can I use it more often?Until next time, keep playing, keep leading, and rememberâthe world needs the special IT that only you can bring.

Hey, hey, Workday Playdate peeps! Itâs time for your quick bite of leadership wisdomâa little boost of inspiration, energy, and of course, playfulness to brighten your workday.
Today, weâre talking about one of the most underrated leadership tools: humor. Thatâs rightâif you want to build connection, trust, and motivation within your team, you donât need a corporate retreat or a 100-slide deck. Sometimes, all it takes is a well-placed joke, a moment of levity, or the courage to not take yourself too seriously.
Want to add more fun to your leadership style? Try this improv-inspired game:
The Mis-Translation Game
Pick a âtranslatorâ and a âspeaker.â The âspeakerâ delivers a serious workplace announcementâbut in complete gibberish. Example: âGloobity blop floo fandango periwinkle!â The âtranslatorâ must confidently âinterpretâ what was just said. Example: âAh yes, that means todayâs meeting will be catered by an army of penguins!â Rotate roles and let the laughter flow. Why does this work? Because it helps teams embrace the unknown, think on their feet, and find joy in the unexpected. And a team that laughs together? Thatâs a team that trusts each other.
Take it further:
Reflect on a leader who used humor to inspire you. What did they do? Whatâs one way you can bring more humor into your leadership style this week? How can you create an environment where your team feels safe to have fun?And donât forgetânext up, weâre going even deeper with JaMarr Johnson, the "Entrepremedian" who helps leaders use humor to build stronger workplace cultures. You donât want to miss it!
Journal Prompt: Who on your team might be feeling unheard? Whatâs one small way you can make space for their voice this week? Write it downâand take action.

Itâs time for your Workday Playdate snackâjust a quick bite of leadership wisdom before we go deeper on Wednesday. Today, weâre talking about empathyâthe leadership skill that turns good teams into great ones.
Want a quick and easy way to help your team feel heard? Try this improv-inspired exercise:
âLast Word, First Wordâ
One person starts with a simple sentence. Example: âOur team is growing fast.â The next person must start their sentence with the last word of the previous sentence. Example: âFast changes require clear communication.â Keep going around, building off each otherâs words. Notice how this forces people to really listen and build on whatâs being saidâjust like in a strong, empathetic workplace. Why does this work? Because it shifts conversations from waiting to speak to actively responding. And thatâs where trust starts.

What if the secret to empowering your team and reclaiming your day wasnât about setting more goals, but about leading with intention? Imagine turning your 'hot mess' moments into clear, purpose-driven leadershipâthis framework will show you how.
1. Self-Reflection: Know Your "Hot Mess" MomentsBefore you can set meaningful intentions, you need to identify where you are today. Effective leadership begins with self-awareness. Take time to reflect on your strengths, blind spots, and the patterns that hold you back. For instance, imagine a manager overwhelmed by endless meetings and tasks, only to end the day feeling unproductive.
This "hot mess" state often stems from unclear priorities, not time management. To help uncover these habits, try the "Mirror, Mirror" improv exercise, where leaders mirror each otherâs actions to build awareness of how their behaviors impact their teams. Authentic leadership begins with understanding yourselfâand research supports this, showing that self-aware leaders build trust and reduce employee turnover.
2. Define Clear and Purposeful IntentionsGoals focus on what you want to achieve, but intentions emphasize how you want to show up along the way. Instead of setting a goal to "increase team communication," focus on an intention like "fostering a safe space where everyone feels heard." This shift to intention-driven leadership makes goals more sustainable.
Use the "Yes, And" improv exercise to layer intentions onto your leadership goals. For example, if your goal is to improve one-on-one meetings, your intention could be to "build deeper trust during those conversations." Studies from Gallup reveal that leaders with a clear sense of purpose are significantly more effective at engaging their teams.
3. Turn Intentions into Actionable PlansIntentions are only impactful when paired with concrete steps. If your intention is to "lead with empathy," plan to check in with each team member weekly for 15 minutes.
The "Obstacle Course" improv exercise is a playful way to practice this, as participants map out their intentions while navigating unexpected challenges. This highlights the importance of creating triggersâsuch as calendar remindersâto stay consistent. Studies on implementation intentions show that linking actions to specific cues boosts follow-through by 91%. When intentions translate into daily habits, leadership growth becomes inevitable.
4. Maintain Flexibility and AdaptabilityLeadership rarely goes as planned, so adaptability is key. When unexpected challenges ariseâlike a project derailing due to budget cutsâa flexible leader adjusts the execution while staying anchored in the original intention.
The "New Choice" improv exercise demonstrates how to pivot in real-time while preserving your core purpose. Leaders who model resilience not only solve problems more effectively but also inspire innovation within their teams. Harvard Business Review reports that adaptable leadership leads to 30% higher innovation rates.
5. Reflect and Iterate: Progress, Not PerfectionFinally, remember that intentions arenât "set it and forget it." Consistent reflection allows you to refine your approach. For example, a manager who struggles to mentor staff regularly may pivot to bi-weekly group mentoring sessions instead.
Celebrate lessons learned with the "Failure Celebration" improv exercise, where leaders share moments of missed intentions, reframing them as growth opportunities. This iterative approach to intention setting boosts long-term leadership efficacy by normalizing progress over perfection, as highlighted by the Center for Creative Leadership.
Final Thoughts
By applying this five-step framework, you can unlock a new level of mindful leadership that empowers both yourself and your team. Pick one intention to focus on this week, and reflect each evening on how well you honored it. Share your progress on social media or within our improve it! community to inspire others. Intentional leaders create empowered teamsâand this year, that leader can be you.

Vivian Acquah is paving the way for more inclusive and equitable workplaces.
Sheâs not just a DEI consultant; sheâs a force of nature dedicated to helping leaders like you create cultures where everyone belongs. As the founder of Amplify DEI, Vivian combines innovation, empathy, and practical tools to inspire lasting change. You can connect with her on LinkedIn at the link below and get ready to feel inspired.
In this episode of the improve it! Podcast, Vivian and Erin get real about how to show up for your team and for yourself. They dive into everything from intention setting to the game-changing role of empathy in leadership. Vivian shares her journey of overcoming workplace discriminationâa story thatâs both heartbreaking and empoweringâand how it fuels her mission to make DEI accessible and actionable.
Erin and Vivian also explore how cutting-edge tools like virtual reality can enhance DEI training, plus practical ways you can foster inclusion right now. This is an episode you donât want to miss. But first, here are five nuggets of wisdom to take with you.
1. Start with AlignmentLetâs face it: leadership without alignment is like a GPS without a destination. Vivian stressed the importance of knowing your values and setting clear intentions. When your actions match your mission, youâre not just leadingâyouâre inspiring.
This is your reminder to check in with yourself: Are your actions in sync with your why?
2. Empathy: Your Leadership Superpower
Empathy isnât fluffâitâs the glue that holds inclusive teams together. Vivian shared how putting yourself in someone elseâs shoes builds trust and connection. Itâs about listening, validating, and creating space for others to thrive.
If youâre not leaning into empathy, youâre missing the secret sauce of great leadership.
3. Think Outside the Box with Virtual RealityImagine walking in someone elseâs shoesâliterally. Vivian blew my mind with how virtual reality can immerse people in diverse experiences, making DEI concepts hit home on a deeper level.
This isnât just tech for techâs sake; itâs a tool to spark real understanding and action.
4. Mistakes Are the Price of ProgressHereâs the truth: youâre going to mess up. And thatâs okay. Vivian reminded us that mistakes are opportunities to grow, not reasons to stop. When you create a safe space for open dialogue, you empower your team to tackle tough topics head-on.
Progress, not perfection, is the goal.
5. DEI is Everyoneâs Job
DEI isnât just a box to check or something for HR to handle. Itâs a collective responsibility. Vivianâs practical toolsâlike conversation cardsâmake it easier to engage your team in meaningful discussions.
The future of DEI is about showing up, staying committed, and adapting as we learn.
Final Thoughts
This episode is packed with tools, tips, and truth bombs to help you lead with more intention and impact. Vivianâs insights remind us that creating inclusive workplaces isnât just the right thing to doâitâs the smart thing to do.
