In this episode of In Conversation with Tourists, I speak with Salma, a student from Chicago spending a semester in Edinburgh.
We explore the ideas of mindful tourism, sustainable travel practices and what it means to truly be present while exploring a new place.
One moment that stayed with me is when Salma said, âIt's fun to go to places that don't exist anywhere other than the new place you're in,â but the entire conversation is insightful, thoughtful and full of inspiration.

In this episode of In Conversation with Tourists, Iâm joined by Charlie for an unexpected follow-up to our recent trips to Stockholm.
By pure coincidence, we found ourselves on the same departure flight , and we've decided to record an episode of experiencing the city in completely different ways.
Charlieâs trip was shaped by friends, gym, some quirky bars and exploring Stockholmâs more youthful, social side. Mine leaned towards slower days, family time, and, unsurprisingly, a few museums along the way.
Together, we reflect on how the same city can offer entirely different experiences depending on where you are in life and personal needs, rather than being mainly guided by a list of must-do activities.

Iâm in love⊠with this conversation!
Just in time for Valentineâs Day, Iâm sharing one of the most heartwarming episodes weâve ever recorded. For the first time, I interviewed a newlywed couple, an adventurous duo from the U.S., who are traveling the world together and spending a few months in Edinburgh.
From meeting in New York, to discovering Scotland (Robert Burns, haggis, whiskey, and the Borders!), and exploring Europe from Italy to Georgia, their stories are full of curiosity, joy, and the magic of connecting with people and places.
This episode is a little gift for anyone who loves travel, love stories, or just celebrating human connection.

This episode is a thoughtful chat with Jon, a traveler who truly pays attention to places, to people and the spaces in between.
We take a look at Eastern Europe through his eyes, including his reflections on Georgia and other destinations often seen as grey or uniform. Jon has a real fondness for public architecture : bus stations, communal spaces, metro, those overlooked structures which he feels embody the spirit, playfulness, and creativity of local communities.
Beyond the travel destinations, we also discuss how we travel: whether alone or with others, fast or slow, and what changes when we take the time to really see whatâs already around us. Itâs a warm, down-to-earth episode about curiosity, awareness, and the quiet joy of exploring with an open heart.

Different format, two short street interviews with tourists in Edinburgh in the summer of 2025. Delighted to find out what caught their attention and what they would recommend others to do in the city.

As the year slows down and many of us start reflecting rather than rushing, this conversation feels especially timely.
In this episode of In Conversation with Tourists, I sit down with TĂ©a, a thoughtful traveler and researcher whose journeys have taken her through the Himalayas, Peru and many other places â and closer to home, Scotland.
TĂ©a doesnât travel to collect destinations. She travels to meet places. Through breath, body awareness, nutrition and a deep sense of presence, she explores how landscapes can be felt, not just visited. We talk about moving through powerful places gently, listening to your body on the road, and how travel can become a way of reconnecting â with yourself as much as with the world around you.
Itâs grounding conversation, perfect for this reflective time of year.
Enjoy it!

This conversation with Nadia felt like paging through a living album of travelâfull of warmth, laughter, and quiet reflection. She brought me into her childhood summers in Italy, her teenage adventures in Rhodes and the Swiss Alps, and the years of building new memories with her own family. What struck me most was how each trip wasnât just about the destination, but about who she was at that stage of life. Now, in her fifties, Nadia is wondering what solo travel might awaken in her, if she can gather the courage to step into it. Sitting with her stories reminded me just how deeply travel shapes us, not only in the moment but across a lifetime.

This episode is with Erica, a wonderful performer from California whose soothing voice feels like it was made for storytelling. We talk about her show, of course, but also about how deeply she connected with Edinburghâhow the city feels beautiful, old, and alive, and why the Meadows quickly became her favorite place. I loved hearing what she would take home as souvenirs: her daily journal entries, written no matter how tired she was, so sheâll never forget this experience, and maybe a piece of locally crafted jewelry to treasure. Erica also shares her refreshing way of travelingâblending in, mingling with locals, soaking up the atmosphere without the need to âperformâ as a tourist. She speaks so warmly about how much Edinburgh residents truly value theatre and how inspiring it was to be part of the Fringe this year. For her, every bit of time and effort it took to come here was completely worth it.

This week Iâm joined by Evelyne, an incredible artist from California whose play Painkiller pushes boundaries both on the page and on stage. We explore the deeply personal inspirations behind her work, what it feels like to perform at the worldâs largest cultural festival, and the surprising ways an international audience can shape an artistâs voice. Evelyne also shares her impressions of Edinburghâits warmth, its multicultural vibrancy, and we discuss the cityâs striking contrast of cobbled streets, grand Georgian architecture, and wild natural beauty. Evelynâs story is both an artistâs reflection and a visitorâs love letter to Scotlandâs capital.

In this episode of InâŻConversationâŻwithâŻTourists, Oana sits down with Jakeâa traveler whoâd happily swap a mustâsee monument for a quiet chat over a neighborhood cafĂ© table. Jake explains why the real itinerary begins where the guidebook ends: on unbeaten paths, in spurâofâtheâmoment detours, and in the stories locals share when you bother to listen.
Their conversation ranges from Edinburghâs close to American city grids, pausing where prayer calls mingle with military drills to prove a place can hold seeming opposites without losing its charm.
Expect insights on forging your own destinations, finding the lesson you need in the moment you need it, and discovering how urban spacesâold or newâoffer fresh perspectives when you approach them with open eyes. If youâre ready to trade âseen it, snapped itâ for genuine human connection, press play and follow Jackâs lead down the side street.

In this reflective solo episode, I explore how our travel behaviors shape the meaning and depth of our holiday experiences. From navigating group dynamics and compromising on activities, to overcoming fears around solo travelâespecially for women in midlifeâI invite listeners to pause and question the why behind their travels. Weâll also unpack the idea of moving beyond mass urban tourism to embrace authentic, sustainable experiences that connect us with local communities. What would it mean to plan a holiday not by what we should see, but by how we want to feel and who we wish to become in the process? Join me for a thoughtful journey into reimagining travel with purpose and presence.

In this episode of In Conversation with Tourists, my guests trade the library for lochs, greenery and calm. They explain how climbing with a mixed group of friends turned a tough ascent into a lesson in teamwork, and why they want to learn from Scots to celebrate small wins.
This dynamic travel duo discuss about warm welcomes and the surprise of a 10 p.m. alcohol curfew and nightlife that slips away at midnight like Cinderellaâs coach. They laugh about the eternal debate over what (if anything) lurks beneath a kilt and the local habit of sunbathing in beachwear the moment clouds part above the Meadows. One guest even arrived with an empty suitcase of flavours, determined to discover her new favourite foods on Scottish soil. With engaging stories about culture, Scottish weather, and breathtaking scenery, their journey underscores the power of friendship and discovery. Each learns valuable lessons about moving at oneâs pace and the importance of companionship during travels.
If youâre curious how newcomers decode cultureâand how a short break can reshape a studentâs sense of homeâpress play.

Jo travelled to Australia, America and in Europe, but one place changed everything for her: India.
In this episode, Jo - now 66- opens up about the transformative power of travel. We talk about her experiences in India - learning from artisans, observing the rhythm of daily life and building warm and lasting connections with locals.
Whether you've been around the world or are still dreaming of your first trip, Jo's story is a beautiful reminder that travel is not always about the destination... it's about who you become along the way if you give yourself time and space to reflect and embrace different perspectives.
