हमारे राजा एक प्रतियोगिता का आयोजन आने वाली पूर्णिमा को कर रहे हैं। इस प्रतियोगिता में भाग लेने वाले व्यक्ति को राजा के समक्ष राज दरबार में झूठ बोलना होगा। यदि राजा उस झूठ को स्वीकार कर लेंगे तो अपनी इकलौती पुत्री की शादी उस व्यक्ति से कर देंगे और उपहार स्वरूप अपने राज्य का आधा राज्य उसके नाम कर देंगे।”

पंडिताइन बहुत ही गुस्सा करने लगी, “पंडित होकर आप भूतों से डरते हैं तो आम लोगों का क्या होगा। देख लेना, आपकी डर की वजह से आपका कमाया हुआ सारा धन लड़के इसी तरह लूट लेंगें। फिर हमारी हालत भीख माँगने की हो जायेगी। आप पंडित हैं, मंत्र का जाप करते हुए नदी पार करेंगे तो कोई भूत कुछ नहीं बिगाड़ पायेगा।”
