Hey Language Learners! Welcome back to another amazing interview about Insecurities about Language. In this episode, I spoke with Martha Summerlin, a self-proclaimed language nerd, proud introvert and cat fan. When she isn’t buried in books or thinking about how language works, you can find her exploring one of North Carolina’s beautiful parks, trying out a new coffee shop or talking your ear off about the marvels of baseball and Formula 1. Having studied sociolinguistics (the study of people’s attitudes towards dialects and accents) she’s passionate about sharing the value of each dialect and language and what they have to teach us about each other.

Ricks, a Christian wife, Worldschooling mom, and a nomadic chef. Teaching for over 25 years, she has been a Montessorian since her own preschool days. She holds Montessori teaching certifications for guiding children from infancy through elementary. She has cooked professionally, in restaurants, commercial kitchens, and private homes on four different continents over the last decade. After 10 years of teaching in central Japan, where Karen founded and operated her own international Montessori school, she sold it all to begin a nomadic life of full-time travel with her family. Karen spreads her message of embracing a Slow Food Lifestyle, a lifelong love of learning, and education for peace by teaching people of all ages how to cook for themselves and why they need to share that gift with those they love. Welcome Language Learners to the Insecurities about Language podcast: The Death of Language and to an exciting topic I am tackling called the Death of Language...within families! In this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Greta Rodney Thompson, born and raised up on the island of St. Martin, the smallest mass of land to be divided into two countries. She considers herself a true St. Martiner with all the benefits of a multi-cultural upbringing, but also cultural confusion that comes along with being in an environment but not necessarily feeling a part of it.
Her maternal side of the family is French and a significant portion moved to Guadeloupe and France. From a very early age Greta realized that there was a disconnect in that she was a part of this family but not able to communicate using the language. Greta decided to make it her goal to improve her French language skills to reconnect with family and inherently learn more about herself. The journey is still ongoing but has led to many gains socially and professionally. Greta is working on bringing more awareness to others about the benefits of multilingualism by sharing stories of others who are bilingual or multilingual and encouraging bilingual education. She does this through her YouTube, Facebook and Instagram page called The Linguistic Isle. Welcome Language Learners to Part 2 of the Death of Language Compilation!
What does the death of language within families mean to you? And you may think that this is an obvious question, or you’re like what does she mean or what does she want to hear, or maybe you have to think about it for a moment, and really there is no right or wrong answer to this question.
Really the question is to get you to think about yourself, your family, someone you know, the language and culture and the immersion of that or maybe the literal death of language. The languages that are dying because it’s not being passed down from generation to generation, not being taught, spoken, not being recognized.
The death of language came from me deciding what I wanted to do with this podcast and having conversations with my mom and thinking about how diverse we are and how like we don’t speak no other language besides English. And so, I have 2 main questions that come from this topic, it’s WHAT HAPPENED? And WHY?
For this episode, I have 7 guest who will provide their answers with thought, emotion, feelings, and relatability, and in no particular order, here is Karen, Kim, Kamille, Adrienne, Joshua, Martha, and the ladies from the Hermosas Chicas Negras: Ayo, Paula, and D’anne with their answers to "What does the death of language with families mean to you?"

Death Of Language Answers!
For this episode, I will talk about my goals, and if you have been following me on IG during January you would’ve noticed that I’ve been doing this 30 day speaking challenge from my online PT program. I’ll talk about how it went and what those results came to be!
The GOALS are pretty straightforward, I don’t want to overcomplicate it, especially since I'm just getting back into it…
1. I will be doing monthly updates on my progress, and it will involve some speaking in Portuguese.
2. I want to document what I’m using and how I’m using it.
3. I want to start reading, probably will start in April 2023.
4. I’d love to do a day in my life type of podcast… (said it was 5th on the podcast lol)
5. I’d love to have one podcast interview in Portuguese and of course it’ll be easy enough for me to get through. - What topics would you want to hear in Portuguese?
6. My last goal is to test out of the A1 category.

He’s a polyglot and currently live in Pamplona, Spain, the place of the famous running of the bulls. He studied both Psychology (Bachelor’s) and Linguistics (Master’s). He has a unique interest in minority language because he is a minority language speaker. His hope is to preserve them and help them gain speakers before they are all gone.
You’ll hear Marcus speak about his background with language learning and his family as well. He lets us know what a minority language is, its importance and benefits. He talks about his minority language, its geographical location, a little history lesson on the Basque language and its evolution. He also talks about how to maintain a minority language. Marcus mentions language isolates. And of course, he talks about his insecurities about language.

Welcome Language Learners to the Insecurities about Language podcast: The Death of Language and to an exciting topic I am tackling called the Death of Language...within families! In this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Eliza, who works in language education and is currently based in Vietnam. As a child, her father married her Serbian stepmother, a first gen Yugoslav immigrant. From the age of 5, Eliza grew up with summer and winter holidays around Serbian food, language, and traditions. However, neither she nor her brother nor her cousins carried the language further. After meeting her husband from the south Indian state of Kerala, her attempt to learn his mother tongue, Malayalam exposed a massive lack in resources and educational materials. Meeting various heritages speakers across the diaspora, as well as studying the social and economic constraints on language learning, has helped Eliza to create dialogues about social change for language preservation.

Welcome Language Learners to the Insecurities about Language podcast: The Death of Language and to an exciting topic I am tackling called the Death of Language...within families! In this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Shana Inofuentes (Aymara and Ashkenazi), who revels in communication that inspires joy and justice. She is a native speaker of English and Spanish, and is an elementary heritage speaker of Aymara, Quechua, and Hebrew. She is a proud daughter of the Bolivian immigrant community of metro Washington, D.C.—the largest Quechua and the largest Bolivian community in the U.S. An art activist, and communications strategist, she recently founded and serves as President of The Quechua Project using social media activism for Quechua revitalization among her community’s youth. After the passing of her Aymara-speaking grandmother in Bolivia, Shana became acutely aware of Native language loss ramifications. Recognizing the potential for this same loss among friends in her predominantly Quechua community, she sought partners to turn the tide. Shana feels compelled to give back to her community by building a future where youth like her son, Amichai, can thrive without sacrificing their identity, a luxury their ancestors did not have. In this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Pona who lives in Toronto, Canada, is the first child of an immigrant family who grew up exposed to several languages, but only spoke English for many years. She has been working to change that in adulthood and is thrilled to have been able to talk about her heritage language experience on this podcast!
In this episode, you will hear Pona speak about her parents language, which is a Chinese dialect from Southeast China called Teochew. Pona states that her heritage language isn't dead, its less alive due to migration.
You will also hear her speak about her families history as it relates to language, what contributed to the death of language, her emotions with the language growing up and her motivation, and so much more. She will define what the Death of Language within families mean to her and of course, her insecurities, because this is a podcast about Insecurities about Language!

Hey Language Learners! Welcome back to another amazing interview about Insecurities about Language. In this episode, I had the pleasure of finally speaking about languages from a males perspective. Joshua was born and raised in Minneapolis, MN. He began learning Spanish in school but desired much more than what he received. He started his solo journey after graduating college to learn Spanish on his own. Trying out many different strategies and failing on the way, he has fallen in love with the process and with languages. His passion for language learning has taken him to Mexico, the Dominican Republic twice, a Spanish church, and serving the Latino community as a volunteer distributing food where he lived. Now, he is on a new chapter of his journey learning a new language, French, to add to his toolbelt but also wants to learn German in the future. Also, he has created a YouTube channel called Spanish Blueprints which is dedicated to helping Spanish learners by giving them study strategies, language learning resources, and his personal experiences with the language learning. He desires to one day be a language coach or a language teacher to fulfill his passion for helping others.

Hey Language Learners! Welcome back to another amazing interview about Insecurities about Language. In this episode, I spoke with Nelsy (Yseuln), currently living in Amsterdam. She was born and raised in Reunion Island, which is located between Madagascar and Mauritius. French and Reunionese creole are her native languages, and she has a strong interest in language learning. She gave a thorough background about when she began learning languages and her journey. Nelsy talks about the official and unofficial language of Reunion Island, French and Reunionese Creole. She mentions joining Twitter was a big turning point in her language journey with English. Nelsy has learned many languages and has a tendency to take on languages with a different writing system, like the Korean language.
We get a history lesson for Nelsy about Reunion Island and the language and discusses about some of her own fears or questions with her local language, such as the lack of written literature and therefore most people including herself cannot write the official/conventional way as historically due to slavery it was a spoken language, also the "value" of the language with French, as creole languages are also seen as not a real language.

Hey Language Learners! Welcome back to another episode, where I will speak about the beginning of my speaking journey.
I have to mention that this episode was recorded in January of 2022 and I restarted my learning journey with European Portuguese. I made this decision because one of my major regrets with learning this language was that I did not start speaking once I joined the program I'm in. So I felt behind compared to others, even though this is a self paced program, so there is no competition buy yourself haha. So I have been speaking (mostly to myself but out loud) and I will be documenting it and sharing soon enough.
But, for this episode I will speak about what challenge got me to "speak", where I found a language partner (for a short period of time), and an embarrassing moment I had, and if I was successful in the challenge.
