    We don’t think about it often, but maybe we should.

    “First and foremost i think it’s important to understand that if something is cut or processed, that means it’s been handled by dozens of different touchpoints,” Mareya explains. “And every single processing points requires the utmost level of safety. And if that is not being upheld, then you’re potentially putting yourself at risk.”
    Most of us try to wash our fruits and veggies with water, but Mareya says that water is ineffective for cleaning produce.
    “What else do we wash with water and it’s all clean? Nothing!” she exclaims. “Not our plates, not our hands, not even our hair or our dogs. You need a cleanser to be able to remove what water can’t.”

    Poofy hair is a lot more common than you may think, especially during the summer.

    But it is true that some people are much more prone to frizz than others. What’s the deal - is there some kind of hair product you’re not using?
    “Frizz prone hair is very porous, so it needs moisture. When the humidity starts spiking, it kind of soaks it up and that’s what makes it puffy,” Dana explains. “Even people with fine hair can have this issue,” she adds.
    How to Defrizz Without Damaging Your Hair
    Okay, we know heat is bad for hair. But seriously, what else are you supposed to do if you can’t combat the the frizz with a flat-iron straightener or blow dryer?
    But Dana says that’ll set you up for even worse frizz down the road.
    “I really think the whole issue of heat styling is a vicious cycle,” she says. “But there’s no question that intense heat really does smooth the cuticle of the hair.”
    As a Floridian, being at the mercy of constant humidity is just part of the day-to-day grind for Dana.
    So what does she recommend to tame the frizz without the heat?
    “I go through vats and vats of deep conditioner because really, it’s a huge help,” Dana says.

    Picking a Sunscreen: What to Look For
    There are so many different kinds of sunscreens out there, especially now. But you still should do a little bit of research before you pick one. Your skin will thank you for it later.
    “What really worries me, and what worries a lot of my colleagues, is that there’s so much misinformation out there about sunscreen,” Melissa says. “Not only do you need to use it, you need to choose the right one for you.
    Some things about sunscreen-hunting are universal.
    “You wanna look for two words on the label. You wanna see something that’s ‘broad spectrum.’ That’s really important because not every sunscreen is broad spectrum,” Melissa explains. “What that means is, you’re gonna get coverage from UVA, which are the rays that are gonna cause you to age, and UVB, which are the rays that are gonna cause you to burn.”
    But you also have to consider yourself as an individual before picking a sunscreen.
    Do you have oily skin? Sensitive skin? Do you live in a sunny city? How important is it to you to wear natural products? Do you wear makeup most days?
    “We always say the best sunscreen is one that you’re actually gonna wear,” Melissa says. “You have to like it. Because if you don’t like it, you’re never going to wear it.”

    The summertime is when we go to the nearest beach, play with our kids in the pool, and generally soak up the sun.

    But your hair can sustain a damage, too. The sun’s rays, the chemicals in a swimming pool - these things can dry out your hair and leave it brittle.
    “I always tell every client, treat your hair like you treat your skin,” Oscar says. “In the summer, it becomes much more hot. So make sure you’re constantly moisturizing your hair.”
    Some of us don’t like moisturizing our hair because it sometimes weighs it down and makes it lose some of its body. But Oscar says it’s important to moisturize anyway. Unhealthy hair won’t hold much body, either.
    “A lot of people... think that conditioner is not good because it makes their hair flat,” Oscar adds. “Your hair will go flat no matter what. The conditioner helps to moisturize your hair so it won’t become brittle, it won’t break.”

  • Microneedling probably sounds terrifying. Even though the results are so fantastic that most of us would sit through the pain, anyway - microneedling is actually pretty painless.
    Marisel Salazar joins Just Ask David once again to give us all the details on the newest skin care craze. This time, it’s all about microneedling.
    Marisel is a New York City based lifestyle writer and photographer. She contributes to various publications like PureWow, Martha Stewart Living, Tasting Table, and NYC GO.
    What is Microneedling?
    “Microneedling has steadily been gaining traction,” Marisel says.
    Indeed, most skin care addicts have not shied away from the intimidating-sounding procedure. (Not even when Kim K showed Instagram her blood-streaked “vampire facial” - a type of microneedling that uses platelet-rich plasma to enhance its healing effects.)
    But that’s the scariest version of microneedling. What is a general microneedling procedure like, and what does it do?
    “In the office, microneedling uses a mechanized device called a dermapen and it makes thousands of miniscule needle punctures in the outermost layers of the skin,” Marisel explains.
    “From these hole punctures, you get a healing response which generates collagen, alleviates acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and wrinkles. “
    The price of a microneedling treatment at a doctor’s office? About $1,500. For a lot of us, that’s pretty steep.
    Microneedling at Home
    At over $1,000 per session, going to a dermatologist or esthetician for microneedling treatment is definitely an investment.
    So for those of us who want to know what we’re getting into, you’ll be relieved to know that you can buy a microneedling roller for use at home.
    And it’s only $30.
    Of course, at-home microneedling rollers are not as effective as what a doctor has in their office. But it does show visible results.
    “The results that you get from rolling it a couple times a week across your face… are truly incredible. It improves the performance of your serums,” Marisel says.
    “Pairing [a serum] with a microneedle roller… is really the ultimate way to go in terms of making sure that your skin care is maximized.”

It can’t be cured, but it can be managed,” Candice clarifies.We know now that rosacea is can be caused by gut inflammation - so it only makes sense that diet plays a huge role in flare-ups. Control you diet, control your rosacea!“Everyone who has rosacea has trigger foods,” Candice explains. “The most common trigger foods are spicy foods and alcohol.” Yikes.   • Monitor How Much Salt You’re Eating
    Even if you NEVER reach for the saltshaker, your food is a lot saltier than you think!
    Why? Lots of seasonings include tons of salt for taste. Also, foods with long shelf lives like frozen and canned foods, use salt as a preservative.
    “It’s very difficult to avoid salt when you eat out,” John says. “Normally, my first choice when I eat out is the plainest thing on the menu, which means either a salad or turkey. Anything that says it’s been seasoned… [or is] in a sauce usually includes a lot of salt.”
    If it sounds bland or gross, that’s because we’ve been conditioned to eat a lot of salt. Still, we can’t deny the health hazards of a high-sodium diet.
    “There’s just too much salt out there. Most Americans eat much more salt than they should every day,” John adds. “It took me a year or two to really wean myself off [salt]. It made my blood pressure go down.”
    Know Yourself and Do Your Research Before Changing Your Diet
    While many of us accept that changing your diet or lifestyle for the better is a healthy move, no one wants to feel deprived of the food they enjoy.
    It’s essential to research what kind of diet seems doable for you in the long-run. For example, if chicken nuggets are your absolute favorite food and non-negotiable in any new diet, a low carb diet would be more nugget-friendly than a vegetarian diet.
    John says the key to simplifying your food choices (and your life) is to “cook more at home and really study labels… Read the labels of everything you buy.”
    Also, if you’re worried about feeling hungry, you have to eat foods that will make you feel full without eating lot of it.
    “You’ve really gotta not just cut the calories you eat, but the types of calories you’re consuming,” John says. “100 calories of sugar is a lot different from 1000 calories of lettuce.”
    Exercise Alone Won’t Make You Healthy, But it Sure Helps
    Okay, you picked a diet that’s perfect for your needs and lifestyle. A little uncomfortable, but totally tolerable.
    So now, how important is exercise in all this? Do you have to start working out to be healthy?
    Well, depends on what your health goals are. If you just want to lose weight, John says no, you don’t HAVE to.
    “Exercise is important, but I’ve read over the years that diet is going to make the biggest difference,” he says.
    If you think about the pure numbers of it, it makes sense. Which is the easiest way to burn 500 calories: running at a steady pace for about 45 minutes, or just avoiding that slice of cake?

  • It’s time to break up with your snooze button. You know it’s not a healthy relationship. You KNOW that you actually don’t feel more rested after hitting snooze a few times.
    When it comes to falling asleep and staying asleep, Lindsay Champion, wellness director of women’s lifestyle publication PureWow, has got you covered.
    As a matter of fact, she says that a little extra beauty sleep can actually make you more beautiful.
    Beauty Sleep is NOT a Myth!
    It may seem a little dramatic when people say that they need their beauty sleep, but they’re actually on the right track.
    Studies on sleep all seem to suggest that sleep plays an important role in the amount of water your skin and hair absorbs.
    “The University Hospital Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio studied two groups of women,” Lindsay says, pointing out one of her favorite researched studies. “One group regularly slept less than five hours a night… the other group of women slept between 7-8 hours a night, which is more optimal.
    “So the group that slept less than five hours, they didn’t only have older looking skin, they had darker under-eye circles... [and] their skin was more dehydrated.”
    So it seems pretty clear: Not getting enough sleep interferes with cell regeneration, which you need plenty of to maintain your youthful glow well into your years.
    Tricks for Better Sleep
    For many of us, getting a full 8 hours of beauty rest is difficult because we surround ourselves with distractions when we should be trying to go to sleep.
    Lindsay recommends calculating your “sleep opportunity.” Coined by sleep scientist Matthew Walker, this term means how long it takes for you to fall asleep PLUS your total ideal sleep time. That means you need to consider how long you’re tossing and turning before you actually drift off to sleep.
    Another great suggestion by Lindsay: Before going to sleep, set your phone or alarm as far away from you as possible. That way, when it wakes you up in the morning, you have to actually get up and cross the room to turn it off.

  • These days, people are more cognizant of the importance of their diet on their overall health than ever before.
    It shows with the variety of diets that are springing in popularity. Even well-known and established diets like veganism and vegetarianism are getting a positive boost in recognition.
    For everyone, the ultimate goal with any of these diets are to be healthy. Nutritionist Sam Houghton of GreenGut Wellness joins Just Ask David to talk to us about another diet that can help you lose weight, fight off (and even reverse!) heart disease, and - get this - you don’t even have to count calories.
    What is Plant-Based Eating?
    On the surface, plant-based eating may just sound like another phrase for being vegetarian. Although the two diets are compatible, plant-based eating is actually a lot more complex than your average vegetarian diet.
    “On a whole food, plant-based diet, you don’t just hold off on the animal products,” Sam explains. “You also don’t eat anything that’s processed. So that includes white flour, white sugar, and a lot of vegetable oils.”
    Omitting processed foods from your diet isn’t something we can all do easily. But you owe it to yourself to take care of your body, especially considering the effects of processed foods on your body in the long-term.
    So what counts as a processed food?
    “My favorite definition of it is from someone who’s really big in the plant-based community: Dr. Michael Gregor,” Sam says. “He defines processed food as something good is taken away and something bad is added.”
    Health Benefits of Plant-Based Eating
    Plant-based eating has a lot of unique benefits that many other diets do not have.
    “Heart disease is the number one killer in our country,” Sam points out. “A whole food plant-based diet is the only diet that has been shown in scientific studies not only to prevent heart disease but also to reverse existing heart disease.”
    So since plant-based diets can help with heart disease, it must be great for weight loss too, right? Exactly!
    “A lot of people want to lose weight but they want to do it in a healthy, sustainable way rather than going on some crazy crash-diet,” Sam says. “One of the things about a plant-based diet is there’s more bulk and more fiber, so you feel fuller on fewer calories and you don’t have to actively restrict your calories.”

  • It’s easy to feel a little jealous of kids playing together outside. It brings us back to a time before adult responsibilities.
    You can’t make your obligations go away, but special guest Teresa Bergen says that outdoor activities can work wonders on your physical and mental well-being. According to her, it doesn’t matter how old or able you are. Everyone can benefit from a little fresh air and exercise.
    “A lot of studies are saying being outside helps with getting better sleep, better concentration, decreasing stress, stimulating creativity, making you feel overall a little better,” Teresa explains.
    Teresa Bergen is a Portland, Oregon-based health, fitness and travel writer. She’s a yoga teacher, a certified personal trainer and, of course, a huge outdoor enthusiast.
    Most Accessible Outdoor Activities for Non-Outdoorsy People
    Not everyone is an outside person and not everyone has a great capacity for physical activity. Luckily, there are still plenty of things you can do outdoors without putting too much stress on your body.
    “I’m a big believer in beginners going on group activities,” Teresa advises. “I would just go on an easy, guided kayak tour. I like the guide because if you do fall in, he’s responsible for pulling you back out of the water.”
    And there’s still plenty to do in the winter - and it doesn’t have to be downhill skiing.
    “For those of you who are in colder climates, at least in winter, snowshoeing is a really nice alternative to scarier stuff, like skiing,” Teresa says. “It’s just like taking a walk in the snow. It’s a little harder than walking and it’s much easier than skiing.”
    The Wackiest Outdoor Activities You’ve Never Heard Of
    Still not interested in the outdoors? Maybe you need a little something different. REALLY different.
    Like goat yoga.
    “This is a trend originating from Oregon sweeping the country,” Teresa explains. “Where you do yoga with goats wandering around. They’re very cute, which makes it kind of funny so people don’t take themselves so seriously while doing the poses. If the pose is really hard, you can stop and pet the goat.”
