Weâre digging into the truth behind the word âfineâ with our guest, Lauren Lefkowitz. Ever catch yourself just saying youâre fine but feeling something totally different? Lauren shares her insightful tips on breaking free from the âfineâ trap and empowering your clients (and yourself) to live more authentically.
Lauren will share her poignant journey from a workaholic corporate HR professional to a transformative life coach, following a life-altering accident. She and Melinda will discuss why we often default to saying weâre âfineâ even when our true feelings are far more complex, and how this can keep us from pursuing the richer, more gratifying lives we deserve. Lauren will offer insights into breaking down overwhelming feelings and tasks to move past our fears and the busyness that consumes us. Weâll also talk about practicing self-acknowledgment, celebrating our accomplishments, and genuinely being happy for ourselves â and how these actions can inspire others.
Lauren Lefkowitz is a coach who partners with executives and emerging leaders who are ready to find joy, excitement, challenge, and balance in their careers and have a personal life to love.
In this episode Melinda and Lauren talk about:
The habitual response of saying âI'm fineâ and how people often mask their true feelings The dangers of the âfineâ trap, where individuals pretend everything is okay, covering up frantic, irrational, neurotic, and emotional states The toxicity of always pretending that everything is amazing and how it can harm personal growth Laurenâs personal transformation from a corporate HR role to a coaching career after a significant accident, emphasizing the shift from financial success to finding joy and purpose Busyness as a barrier to personal fulfillment and the importance of making space to pursue dreams Laurenâs coaching approach with high achievers, focusing on identifying what isnât working in their lives and what they truly want Managing overwhelming tasks by breaking them down into manageable steps The need for self-acknowledgment, the importance of celebrating oneâs accomplishments, and countering the tendency to minimize oneâs own achievements The positive impact of openly sharing and celebrating successes to inspire others âIâd never really charged anyone for coaching. I felt like I was really good at it, and it came really easily to me, so it couldnât be worth all that much money, which is not true at all.â â Lauren LefkowitzGuest Bio:
Lauren Lefkowitz is an executive coach who partners with executives and emerging leaders who have gotten to the middle of their careers and think, This is IT? She works with humans who are ready to find joy, excitement, challenge, and balance in their careers and have a personal life to love.
Lauren was an 80-hour-a-week executive, is a recovering people pleaser, and has lived with chronic illness for nearly 20 years (and once, she broke both of her shoulders chasing a vacuum). She was living the âfine is a trapâ way for years, convincing herself that working all the time and never feeling well were just part of life. Despite these challenges, she decided to take control of her life, learn to set boundaries, create opportunities for personal choice, and relaunch her own career to find her version of success and joy.
She now coaches people and teams who function the way she used to so they can find their own versions of âamazing.â Lauren makes it comfortable to get uncomfortable, create powerful goals, and create sustainable career and life transformation. And Lauren is a certified Laughter Yoga Leader, which she found time for once she realized life could be about more than work.

After her newspaper column âWhy I Let My 9-Year-Old Ride the Subway Aloneâ created a media firestorm, Lenore Skenazy got the nickname âAmericaâs Worst Mom.â (Google it!) She went on to write Free-Range Kids, the book-turned-movement that basically says OUR KIDS ARE SMARTER AND SAFER THAN OUR CULTURE GIVES THEM CREDIT FOR!Lenore has lectured everywhere from DreamWorks to Microsoft to Harvard Med School, Yale Child Study Center â and the Bulgarian Happiness Festival! Now Lenore is co-founder and president of Let Grow, the nonprofit promoting childhood independence and resilience. She lives in New York City with her husband and beloved computer. Her children are gainfully employed. (Phew!) And for the record, she used to write for Mad Magazine. Yep. MAD. But now she's so serious that here is her piece on "Independence as Therapy" in The New York Times.
Tom âTeacher Tomâ Hobson is an early childhood educator, international speaker, education consultant, teacher of teachers, parent educator, and author. He is best known, however, for his namesake blog, Teacher Tom's Blog, where he has posted daily for over a decade, chronicling the life and times of his little preschool in the rain-soaked Pacific Northwest corner of the USA.For nearly two decades, Teacher Tom was the sole employee of the Woodland Park Cooperative School, a parent-owned and operated school knit together by Teacher Tom's democratic, progressive play-based pedagogy. Teacher Tom came into teaching through the backdoor, so to speak, having enrolled his own child in a cooperative preschool, where he began working daily in his daughter's classroom as an assistant teacher under the tutelage of veteran educators â although he'll be the first to tell you that most of what he learned came from the children themselves. When it was time for his daughter to move on, he âstayed behind.â
Today, Teacher Tom shares his play-based pedagogy through online e-courses for early childhood educators; produces online early childhood conferences; consults with organizations about his "Family Schools" program; and inspires early-years audiences around the world (Greece, UK, Iceland, Australia, China, Vietnam, New Zealand, Canada, and across the US) both virtually and in-person with his engaging views on early childhood education, play, and pedagogy.
He was pressured by his blog readers into authoring his first book, aptly named Teacher Tomâs First Book, and is thrilled about the 2023 release of Teacher Tomâs Second Book.
