في حلقة جديدة من بودكاست كتالوج، التقت مها النبوي وأدهم زيدان بالموسيقي والمنتج والدي جي، أحمد الغزولي، الشهير بـ«زولي».
في 2021 أصدر زولي ألبوم أول كابس ALL CAPS، المخصص للرقص ويُعد رابع إصدار له على UIQ.
في رحلته الموسيقية، أنتج زولي 4 ألبومات قصيرة قبل ألبومه الأخير، كما أنتج أيضًا أغاني راب تحت اسم «سواج لي Swag Lee». وأيضًا أسس فينت VENT لتنظيم الحفلات مع عاصم تاج، وأصدر سلسلة فيديوهات مع راما تحت اسم قرش.
في هذه الحلقة، سألنا زولي عن طريقة عمله في الستوديو والحفلات، عن علاقته بمزيكا الرق والحفلات والهيب هوب، وعن تعاونه مع أبيوسف. تحدثنا عن بداياته ومصدر إلهامه، عن أهمية التغيير والتجديد في العمل، كما حللنا معه أغنية BRO.
لكن تبدأ الحلقة بالتجربة الكابوسية التي نتج عنها ألبوم ALL CAPS -
في هذه الحلقة من «كتالوج» نقابل الفنانة ندى الشاذلي، لنتكلم عن «أهوار» أول ألبوماتها الموسيقية. صدر «أهوار» عن تسجيلات «نوى» عام 2017، إلا أن ندى كانت بدأت كتابة الأغاني وتأليف الموسيقى فيه من 2013، وواصلت تطويره والتجريب فيه بطرق مختلفة، في حفلاتها الموسيقية الحية في أوروبا والولايات المتحدة ودول أخرى، منها أندونيسيا.
سنسأل ندى عن مصادر إلهامها، عن عملية تسجيل الألبوم مع أكثر من عشرين موسيقي في كندا، عن كيف أسست فرقتها مع شريف المصري وكونراد أجنس وموريتز أجنس، من أجل أن تلعب الألبوم في عروض حية، وكيف تغير ذلك أثناء جولتها في الولايات المتحدة.
سنسمع سويًا نسخًا مختلفة من «أنا عشقت»، أغنية سيد درويش، التي أعادت ندى توزيعها مع سام شلبي، وضمتها لـ«أهوار». أيضًا ستحكي لنا ندى عن أغنية «برزخ» التي كتبتها مع عليا أيمن، ووزعتها ندى وسام وموريس لوقا، كما ستلعبها لنا على الجيتار في الاستديو، لتساعدنا على تخيّل عملية إبداعها من البداية.

In this episode of Katalog, we sit with Nadah El Shazly to talk about Ahwar, her debut solo album. Ahwar was released on Nawa Recordings in 2017, but Nadah began writing the body of work as far back as 2013, and continued to evolve it through different live performances across Europe, America, and other countries including Indonesia until the onset of corona in 2020.
We speak with Nada about her source of inspiration, and the process of recording the album with close to 20 musicians in Canada. We also speak with her about how she constructed her band with Cherif El Masri, Conrad Agnas and Mauritz Agnaz in order to perform it live, and how this changed during her tour in America.
We also listen to various live and recorded iterations of the song “Ana Ishiqt”, originally by Sayyed Darwish, and rearranged by Nadah and Sam Shalabi for Ahwar. Nadah also helps us to understand how “Barzakh” came to be, a song co-written with Alia Ayman, and arranged by Nadah, Sam, and Maurice Louca. Nadah also plays us the bassline of the song on a guitar in the studio to help us hear how it all began.
But to begin with, Nadah explains how the album started, on performing solo, and her work with Maurice, Sam, and his band, Land of Kush.

نلتقي في هذه الحلقة بثلاثة ضيوف من «بلاتنم»، شركة إنتاج موسيقي (record label) من فلسطين: الناظر (محمد مسروجي)، وهو المنتج الموسيقي، شب جديد (عدي عباس)، الكاتب والمؤدي الرئيسي، وشب موري (أحمد زغموري)، الذي يلعب عددًا من الأدوار في الشركة، أحدها دوره كمخرج إبداعي (art director).
تأسست «بلاتنم» عام 2015، وأصدرت أغنيتها الأولى عام 2017. وفي 2019، أطلقت الشركة «سندباد الورد»، أول ألبوم كامل لشب جديد، من إنتاج الناظر.
في فترة زمنية قصيرة، تمكنت «بلاتنم» من بناء اسم وقاعدة جماهيرية واسعة، حتى صارت من الأسماء الأساسية على ساحة التراب والهيب هوب في العالم العربي.

This episode of Katalog is special because of instead of having only one guest, today we have three. From BLTNM, we have Al Nather or Mohamed Masrouji, Shabjdeed / Ady Abbas, Ahmad Zaghmouri (Shabmouri).
BLTNM is a music production company and record label from Palestine. Al Nather is the producer, Shabjdeed is the head writer, and MC, while Shabmouri plays a number of roles, including art director.
Even for those who haven’t heard of BLTNM, but follow trap or hip hop, have likely come across songs within their catalogue. BLTNM was founded in 2015, and released its first song in 2017. Within a short time, BLTNM was able to build a massive, youth-driven fan base across the region, until it became one of the main names associated with the hip hop and trap scene in the Arab world. After they released a bundle of tracks online through a strategic plan distribution plan, they dropped 2019 “Sindibad” produced by Al Nather, with lyrics written and rapped by Shabjdeed.
We sat down with the founders and artists behind BLTNM after their party in Cairo in 2019. In the episode they tell us about the process of making their first album, about their life before BLTNM and about how the company was established. We also break apart their hit track, “Bansak” together, and end the episode hearing about their work dynamic as a group, and how they develop standards for assessing and progressing their work.

في هذه الحلقة، نلتقي بدينا الوديدي، مغنية وملحنة من القاهرة. بدأت الوديدي مشوارها الغنائي مع فرقة «الورشة» المسرحية في 2008وكانت أيضًا عضوة بفريق «مشروع النيل»، وأصدرت معه ألبومين.
اشتهرت الوديدي بصوتها المميز، وقدرة أغانيها على إضفاء طابع حديث على الفلكلور المصري، والذي كان مصدر إلهامها الرئيسي في البداية.
من خلال الحفلات التي قدمتها مع فرقتها الموسيقية، بالإضافة إلى العديد من الورش مع موسيقيين مثل كاميليا جبران وفتحي سلامة وجيلبرتو جيل، طورت الوديدي صوت موسيقاها، الذي تبلور في ألبومها المنفرد الأول، «تدوّر وترجع»، والذي صدر في ٢٠١٤ وجمع بين عدد من الموسيقيين النشطين بالمشهد الموسيقي المصري.
بعد الألبوم الأول، قررت الوديدي أن تسلك طريقًا مختلفة، وأن تنتج بنفسها ألبومها الثاني دون الاستعانة بأي موسيقيين، وبالاعتماد فقط على أصوات القطارات بالإضافة إلى صوتها الغنائي، وأطلقت عليه اسم «منام». أنتجت الوديدي «منام» بالتعاون مع مهندس الصوت الألماني-الأمريكي بريان سميث.
هنا، تحدثنا الوديدي عن تجربتها كمنتجة، بالإضافة إلى أهمية العمل مع أشخاص آخرين ودور ذلك في خلق توازن في حياة الفنان. كذلك نسألها عن أصل فكرة ألبوم «منام»، وما الذي دفعها إلى تفكيك أصوات القطارات وتحويلها إلى فرقة موسيقية.

Today we have with us Dina El Wedidi, a singer and composer from Egypt who started her musical career with the Warsha theatre troupe in 2008. Dina was also a founding member of The Nile Project, where she released two albums with the project. Dina became known for her style of musical singing, while interpreting classical Egyptian folk songs along with an out pour of concerts with her band, and many workshops with iconic musicians including, Kamilya Jubran, Fathy Salama, and Gilberto Gil. Through all this, Dina progressed her musical style and development, which culminated in Tedawar we Tergaa (Turning Back), her first solo album released in 2014, which also included contributions from many musicians across the scene.
After the release of her first album, Dina decided to take a different direction, and produce her first solo album, without musicians, it was one made entirely out of train sounds and her singing, she called it 'Slumber'. The album is Dina’s first experiment in production for Dina, it’s in cooperation with co-producer, Brian Smith.
In this episode we speak with Dina about her first experiment as a producer, and also the the difference between working with human beings versus machines, and the importance of creating a balance in life. But first we ask her, where the idea of 'Slumber' came from, and what prompted her to deconstruct the sounds of a train, in order to form a band out of it.

في الحلقة الأولى من كتالوج، نلتقي بموريس لوقا، ملحن ومنتج موسيقي من القاهرة، شارك في تأسيس عدد من المشروعات الموسيقية، من ضمنها «بيكيا» و«الألف» و«أقزام شرق العجوزة» و«الإخفاء» و«كرخانة». في يناير ٢٠١١، أصدر موريس لوقا «جراية»، أول ألبوماته المنفردة، والذي تبعه بألبوم «بنحيي البغبغان» في نوفمبر ٢٠١٤، ثم ثالث ألبوماته، «إليفانتين»، في فبراير ٢٠١٩.
في هذه الحلقة، يحدثنا موريس عن أسلوب إنتاج الألبوم والعلاقة بين الارتجال والتلحين، كما نشرّح معًا التراك الأول، «المجذوم»، ولكن ليس قبل أن يحكي لنا عن نقطة البداية التي انطلق منها لصناعة الألبوم، وعن طبيعة النقلة الفنية التي أخذته من «البغبغان» إلى «إليفانتين».

In the pilot episode of Katalog, we have with us Maurice Louca, a composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist from Cairo, Egypt. Maurice has co-founded various musical projects and bands, including, Bikya, Alif, The Dwarfs of East Agouza, Lekhfa, and Karkhana. In January 2011, Maurice released his debut album, Garraya, followed by Salute the Parrot, in November 2014. In February 2019, Maurice released his third album, Elephantine. In this episode, we ask Maurice about his artistic process, and the relationship between improvisation and composition on the album, in addition to his use of repetition. We also ask him to break apart the layers of the album’s single, “The Leper” — but first, we ask him about the point of departure for the album, and the change in artistic process between Salute the Parrot and Elephantine.
