In this episode, we explore how individuals can navigate turbulent and ever-changing times while maintainingtheir sense of self and managing relationships with their environment and the people around them. Starting with history, we discuss the dark aspects of human naturerevealed during the occupation of Poland by both the fascist and Soviet regimes in World War II. We talked about Jan T. Gross’s Neighbors: The Destruction of the Jewish Community in Jedwabne, Poland, which exposes the complexities of collaboration and violence. We also mentioned Tara Zahra’s Against the World: Anti-Globalism and Mass Politics between the World Wars, impressed by how immigrant women fought for their autonomy and rights by organizing and participating in social movements. Drawing connections to the present, we reflect on the struggles of independent women in modernmetropolitan life, including challenges of identity, adaptation, and cultural expectations. In the end, from a Kazakh perspective, we critically engage with our cultural environment and traditions, discussing how contemporary Kazakh womennavigate their relationship with heritage and nationhood. Beyond raising these questions, we hope to inspire deeper reflection and collective growth as we continue this conversation together.
