Opera singer Fredrika Brillembourg is back with another episode of Leitmotifs, this time with Michael Naumann.
He served as commissioner for cultural affairs in the German federal government from 1998 to 2001 and since 2012, Naumann has been the director of the Barenboim-Said Academy, offering bachelor degrees and arts diploma certificates in music.
Fredrika talks with the 79-year-old about culture in times of crisis, his work for the academy, and how he got hooked on classical music.

Every month, opera singer Fredrika Brillembourg hosts âLeitmotifs,â our series on classical music. In this episode Fredrika talks with cellist Eckart Runge, who played in the world renowned Artemis Quartet for 30 years.
In 2019, Runge left the Berlin-based string quartet to explore solo projects that combine various musical genres, including classical, jazz and rock. He tells Fredrika about his life-long love for the cello and return to the stage.

In the latest segment of our series âLeitmotifs,â Fredrika talks with soprano Alma SadĂ©. SadĂ© has been with the Komische Oper ensemble since 2014 and is known for roles such as Maria in âWest Side Storyâ and Hodel in âAnatevka,â among others.
Currently she is performing in Weinbergerâs operetta, âFrĂŒhlingsstĂŒrme,â at the Komische Oper Berlin. âFrĂŒhlingsstĂŒrmeâ is considered the last operetta of the Weimar Republic. The operetta premiered in 1933 â and now, 87 years later, itâs back on stage in a new production by Barrie Kosky.

Host and opera singer Fredrika Brillembourg speaks with Berlin-based couple Alexander Polzin and Sommer Ulrickson about their collaborations in the world of opera, theater and dance.
Polzin, as well as being a sculptor, has worked extensively as a stage designer and director. Ulrickson is a choreographer, dancer, actor and director.
The husband and wife have worked with the Salzburg Festival, Theatre La Monnaie and Deutsche Oper Berlin, among other places. They also create projects that combine musicians, dancers, texts and art in pieces like âLove in Fragmentsâ which had its premiere at the 92nd Street Y in New York City last March.

Brillembourg caught up with Ginsberg while she was working with the Deutsche Oper Berlin on her sets for a new production of Benjamin Brittenâs opera, âA Midsummer Nightâs Dream,â a co-production with OpĂ©ra Orchestre National Montpellier which will open at the Deutsche Oper in 2020.
