J.G. Ballard (1930-2009) is one of the most celebrated science fiction authors of all time. Although perhaps best known for the film adaptations of his work Crash, High Rise, and Empire of the Sun, his written works span five decades, including nineteen novels and numerous short stories. Eschewing popular sci fi themes, Ballard probes inner rather than outer space, exploring the psychology of societal dysfunction and collapse.
Dystopias are common in Ballardâs writing, as are bleak urban landscapes with their attendant alienation and disconnect. Ballard does not deal in âcosy catastrophesâ, there is no going back to the way things were. Instead, people are seen adapting to and even embracing post-apocalyptic worlds, undergoing psychic and sometimes physical transformation. In a universe portrayed in the modern age as being utterly devoid of meaning and purpose, emotion is often regarded as little more than human weakness. The Prius of our dreams is heading straight for the brick wall of reality, and the current convulsions such as the Brexit referendum in the UK, the impending implosion of the European Union, and the election of Donald Trump as US President are but the latest wave of woes crashing on the shore of a fantasy future we fashioned for ourselves in a brief moment of gas guzzling madness. Under the illusion of invincibility we still tell ourselves that âthis time itâs differentâ but as we shall soon discover, forces far beyond our control have other ideas. In his most uncompromising work to date, John Michael Greer maps possible futures for America during the hard times ahead and itâs clear that before things get better, theyâre going to get a lot worse.

Peter Baumann discusses his new album Machines of Desire, and his long career in and outside music. From 1971 to 1977 Peter Baumann was part of what many consider to be the definitive line-up of German electronic music pioneers Tangerine Dream, contributing to classic albums such as Phaedra, Rubycon, and Ricochet. Although he continued to record for several years thereafter, much of his subsequent activity has revolved around socio-political realms.
Since the early 2000s, Peter has devoted much of his time to studying and promoting initiatives in science and philosophy that shed light on the human condition. This has included work with the California Institute of Integral Studies, the Mind and Life Institute, and his own Baumann Foundation. In 2011 he co-authored the book Ego: The Fall of the Twin Towers and the Rise of an Enlightened Humanity, before finally returning to music in 2016 with Machines of Desire, his first full album since 1983.
