We wrap up this season with a long-time friend of the show, Allen Rodriguez. is a legal product development strategist who has been serving the legal industry for over 20 years. Over the course of his career, Allen has built a reputation for creating innovative #legalservices products as well as developing highly effective law firm business and marketing strategies. Allen is a valued speaker on the topics of law marketing, legal services product development, and future of law issues. He has provided consulting and marketing services for companies such as McKinsey & Co., Coleman Research Group, LexisNexis, and Littler. Before starting The Singular Law Group under the Arizona alternative business structure for #lawfirms, Allen founded law innovation agency ONE400 and was the Director of Attorney Services at LegalZoom. While there, his work contributed to a substantial portion of overall revenue at the company and helped LegalZoom move from a provider of “do-it-yourself” legal services to a comprehensive legal solutions provider, incorporating attorney-fulfilled work across all U.S. jurisdictions. Additionally, this was a special evening event on #VeteransDay and Allen is a United States Army veteran. We were honored to have him join to tell us about the Singular Law Group on such a special day. For those considering building a law firm in Arizona, that allows for non-lawyer ownership, you're going to want to catch this replay. Allen doesn't only give us the vision of Singular Law Group, he also lays out the exact steps he went through to apply to the Arizona bar and the efforts it took to be approved to offer legal services under the ABS model. Thanks for spending time with us this season... we'll be back in the future! More about Allen Rodriguez & Singular Law Group: Allen Rodriguez on Twitter: https://twitter.com/allen_rodriguez. In a change of pace for our show, we do not cover a legaltech startup in this episode. Instead, we take a look at The Effectiveness Project, which is a legal technology collaboration through the Legal Technology Core Competencies Certification Coalition and a variety of legal technology vendors.
The Effectiveness Project is an international working group of legal professionals, with support from LTC4, collaborating to establish best practices and baseline skills for creating effective legal documents. They are focusing, at present, on what is called Document Competency.
The first release from The Effectiveness Project, is the Document Competency Best Practices Guide. This guide is free and can be downloaded right now. See the link below. The Best Practices Guide was created with the understanding that the legal document-creation process is highly individualized. As such, The Effectiveness Project sought to provide guidance that is specific, yet flexible. To meet that goal, the Best Practices Guide is divided into drafting stages so it can be used as a modular part of a workflow.
Two participants in the collaboration are friends, and former guests, of LegalTechLIVE. They joined us to describe the goals and mission of The Effectiveness Project.
Ivy Grey is the Vice President of Strategy and Business Development at Wordrake. Ivy has been the driving force behind the effort to improve efficiency and effectiveness of document creation through The Effectiveness Project.
Chris Cangero is the Chief Executive Officer of DocStyle, LLC and another of the leading voices behind push for better document creation via The Effectiveness Project.
Take a listen and download the Best Practices Guide. Connect with our guests and get involved!

FairClaims is an easy alternative to court. With nearly a decade of experience as a leading online dispute resolution provider, we've resolved thousands of disputes online. We believe everyone deserves a chance to be heard and are here to help. Here is how it works: 1) Tell us about your dispute. We will invite the other side to resolve it and assign a qualified and friendly Arbitrator. 2) You will upload evidence and have a live phone or video hearing where the Arbitrator will hear both sides of the story. 3) Your Arbitrator will issue a decision within 8 days of your hearing. This decision is legally binding and enforceable. Stephen Kane is a former practicing lawyer who has been working on this #accesstojustice solution since before 2016. As an attorney, he saw how unfair the legal system can be for both individuals and businesses. As a result, he built a platform where parties can be heard, regardless of who they are. Learn more about this online dispute resolution ( #ODR ) platform for binding arbitrations. In the discussion, we cover a variety of issues, from fundraising, to founding, and beyond. Coming hot off of a $3.5M fundraising round, Jacqueline Schafer joined LegalTechLIVE to share her experience as a practicing lawyer turned #legaltech founder. Here's a little background on the impressive pedigree of Jacqueline Schafer: Jacqueline began her career as a litigation associate at the New York law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton, & Garrison, and spent much of career as an Assistant Attorney General in the Washington and Alaska Attorney General’s Offices, where she specialized in appellate practice and complex litigation. Before joining the startup world and founding Clearbrief, Jacqueline also served as Senior Director, Program Counsel for the national child welfare nonprofit Casey Family Programs, negotiating agreements with courts across the country and managing litigation and amicus efforts in impact litigation. Jacqueline was recognized by VentureBeat as one of four semi-finalists for the 2020 Women in AI Rising Star award for founding ClearBrief, as well as for her Dec 2020 law review article describing how AI and natural language processing (NLP) will transform courts and government social services. We won't tell you the story that changed how Jacqueline started to think about clarity and facts that led to the creation of Clearbrief... you'll want to catch that story in in the episode. Clearbrief allows you to know the record inside and out. The only tool that instantly finds and links to the best record documents (facts and evidence) to support each sentence in the brief, while you write! All while using #NLP. We cannot pretend to be objective about this interview. Erin Levine has been a friend of the show for several years. She's previously been a co-host and has been a huge supporter for other women founders who have been on the show. In the episode Erin takes us from inception of Hello Divorce to her decision to fundraise (coming off a recent $2M raise). Her company has faced many difficulties including a patchwork of jurisdictional and local rules, the difficulties of reframing the idea of divorce and the approaches to wellness they've employed in a more holistic approach to the termination of the marital contract. Further, we dive into finding the right investors and moving from an small "all hands on deck" #legaltech #startup into a more refined operationalized and systematized company. A necessary change for a growing #justicetech company. We do not want to ruin this candid conversation by over-describing the interaction. Get to know Erin and Hello Divorce. If you've been following the news at all in the last 5 years, you're going to be inspired by this #startup. Felicitas Ukert is the Founder & CEO. Iraida Herrera is the Founder and VP. They met at Cornell Law School in 2019 when they were both pursuing their LLM's. It was during that time in law school that Get The Docs was born. They were aware of the crisis at the US border for those migrating from Central America. As they researched the issue of #immigration, they discovered many people already in the US often need to obtain documentation from their country of origin. They set out to make it easier to obtain documents from countries of origin. In order to do so, they needed to have contact with lawyers on the ground in those countries. That's what they did. Expecting they would have huge demand from immigrants moving to the United States, they were surprised to learn that was only about 50% of their inquiries. In fact, they also had significant inquiries from those in the US who were moving outside the country. Also, they have those in countries outside the US who need to obtain documents from an entirely separate nation state. Having such a broad total addressable market is both a blessing and curse. As it is difficult to describe to potential market to investors. You cannot tell investors the entire world is your market. So, they describe some of their experience in refining the product, the software, and their pitch. Felicitas and Iraida are most definitely addressing an issue where #legaltech can improve efficiency and help customers to rest at ease as the tracking of documents is outsourced to Get The Docs. Haley Altman has had a notable legal and #legaltech career. She's steadily moved forward from legal associate, to partner, to legaltech co-founder and CEO, and now sits as the Global Head of Corporate Development for the company that acquired her legal technology startup. In this episode, Haley shares her outstanding journey from legal practice into technology and entrepreneurship. Her experience should be shared with as many #startup founders as possible. Two takeaways that stood out in the conversation. Haley described what her startup offered, with precision. Make sure to listen to that aspect of her interview and refine the description of your startup. The second great takeaway was how her previous company found a sweet spot on the pain point lawyers were having in managing transactions. Lawyers knew it was a problem that required a solution. The added benefit, was many investors had been on the other side of closing transactions and therefore understood the problem her company was solving. As such, it put Doxly in a good place for selling the software as well as finding funding. Lastly, we touched on the recent acquisition of Kira Systems by Litera. There appears to be a focus on Litera becoming the one-stop shopping experience for legal transactions via #LiteraTransact. Andy Wilson knows a thing or two about #legaltech. He's been operating in the legal technology space since 2004. Back when legal technology was eDiscovery and eDiscovery was legaltech. We were lucky to have him join the show because he has incredible experience in building a company, building the product, building the cloud, and then building a new version of his #eDiscovery company in cloud-based service on AWS. Not only did he build a venture backed company, but he built a bootstrapped company for many years, which allowed them to build the cloud service, before becoming venture-backed. At the point they decided to seek outside capital, it was all about growing at a faster rate. It wasn't a decision made easily. Andy spends a lot of time describing the thought process he went through before accepting outside money and from who to accept that money. Bottom line, if you are a #startup founder in the legal space, you're going to want to watch/listen to this episode because Andy shares some incredible knowledge and experience. Drew Amoroso founded DueCourse to address a big problem he saw in the legal community: a lack of effective, modern development resources for lawyers. He believe's in the power of providing lawyers with the information they need to take control of their practice and career. He started his career as a senior associate at Reed Smith and was the immediate past president of the Barristers Club at the Bar Association of San Francisco. Drew is a visiting lecturer at UC Davis School of Law, the University of San Francisco, and Golden Gate University, where he teaches a Practice Ready Seminar designed to prepare law students to make the transition from students to practice-ready lawyers. As you will learn in this episode, Drew is a believer in health and fitness and upon leaving Reed Smith, he branded himself as a fitness lawyer. That is the way he carved out his individual practice area in the space he desired to practice. His underlying belief in wellness drove him to #professionaldevelopment, training, and coaching for #lawyers. After on-premises training, Due Course became a software-as-a-service tool connecting lawyers with coaches to help them achieve their personal and professional goals. Wellness is an ongoing problem in the legal industry, so anything that focuses on the wellness and personal growth is worth paying attention. #legaltech More about Drew Amoroso & DueCourse App: Drew Amoroso on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drewamoroso/. BNH.ai is a law firm and data science company serving enterprise organizations using #artificialintelligence applications in their business processes. BNH.ai helps the world’s largest and most innovative organizations ensure the privacy, security, fairness, and transparency of their AI and analytics. Our clients rely on us for concrete, highly technical advice to manage the risks of models that affect millions of people around the world. In this episode, we were joined by firm co-founder and resident data scientist, Patrick Hall. Patrick Hall is principal scientist at bnh.ai. Patrick also serves as a visiting professor in the Department of Decision Sciences at The George Washington University. He is a frequent writer, speaker and advisor on the responsible and transparent use of AI and ML technologies. In this episode we discuss a variety for AI use cases in which their firm has been involved. DC allows for non-lawyer ownership of law firms, which makes this firm really fascinating. It gives them a lot of flexibility to provide services as a full-service consultancy and law firm. The most poignant and probably highest profile topic we discussed is that of #algorithmicbias. Naturally, this is a topic that rears its ugly head in the #legaltech and justice technology discussions and topics. The nice thing about hiring a law firm with a scientist as a co-founder is your company has a full staff available to guide you through issues to avoid algorithmic bias. The failure of his first business led him to the civil court process where he was inspired to fix problems within that space. Callum Murray is the founder and CEO of Amiqus.co, a #legaltech company located in Scotland. Amiqus helps law firms to remotely verify and onboard staff and clients in minutes. In the UK, the rules on law firms and preventing money laundering are much more advanced than the US. As such, law firms have to conduct background checks or identity checks of staff and clients before accepting the engagement. That's where Amiqus get involved. They are a market leading compliance platform for legal, recruitment, public sector and financial services. The company offers pre-employment checks, AML compliance, identity checks, and enhanced background checks when necessary. They began their work with lawyers and law firms and partnered with Clio as Clio grew into the UK. During the pandemic, they pivoted to working with the NHS in order to keep working while law firms were mostly on hold. Prior to joining Anderson Kill, Hailey was regulatory counsel at leading cryptocurrency platforms Coinbase and bitFlyer. Michael Tam has been specifically focused on venture investing since early in his career. It is the trajectory he chose. Here's a little background about our guest: Michael is a principal at Craft on the investment team, based in Los Angeles. Prior to joining Craft, he was an investor at Crosscut, where he led investments and participated on the boards of consumer and enterprise companies. As an operator, Michael managed Uber's business in Southern California markets and launched L., a direct to consumer brand acquired by Procter & Gamble. Michael began his career in venture at Bullpen Capital. Previously, he worked at BofA Merrill Lynch's tech investment banking group and began his career at PwC. In this episode we discuss the investment thesis of Michael Tam and Craft Ventures. B2B enterprise Saas is where their venture team focuses and specializes. Michael was asked to join the show as he led the round in former guest and #legaltech startup Trellis.law (also a sponsor of the show). I made it clear we were interested in everything startup fundraising and we did not expect him to be a legaltech focused investor.
