  • In this episode, I share a few of my favourite sugar free recipes.

    Full disclosure: I'm no Masterchef!
Plus I have a pretty busy life.

So listen to get some yummy ideas for quick and simple meals that don't contain refined sugar or flour.

P.S. Unlike the processed food industry, when I say "sugar free", I mean it!

For example, here's the recipe for chaffles:

    INGREDIENTS

2 large eggs 1 cup finely shredded mozzarella or cheddar a little butter

    DIRECTIONS

Pre-heat waffle iron. Whisk egg and cheese in a medium bowl. Put a little butter in the waffle iron. Pour about 1/4th of the mixture into the waffle iron and cook for 2-3 minutes or until golden. Remove and repeat for remaining batter. Use instead of bread!

See my recipe for chia jam here, on the Life After Sugar YouTube channel.

  • Mark's health issues started early in his teenage years. Growing up in the north east of the UK, he'd been put on antibiotics for an ear infection, and at the age of 16 his doctor wanted to put him on anti-depressants.

But instead, Mark decided to study in the health field, which included changing his diet. And he started cooking for himself and experimenting with different foods.

Mark was experiencing inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS) and asthma, and when he cut dairy from his diet, his symptoms disappeared.

When Mark started eating low carb and reduced added sugar, his candida symptoms went away too.

Mark and I are both big fans of questioning and experimenting.

And I hope that this thought-provoking episode will inspire you to start making changes that work for YOU.

  • It's a question I get a lot: What if I don't have enough willpower to cut sugar?

Well... here's my own question: What if it's not even about willpower?

In fact, you don't need willpower to cut sugar. Really!

So in this episode, I borrow the definition of willpower from authors and researchers who've studied it.

In fact, here's a couple of other questions:

Did you know that willpower is unreliable and also a finite resource, and that just like a battery, it can deplete with use?And did you know that blood sugar levels can affect your willpower?

If you also believe that you don't have enough willpower to cut sugar, listen to this episode to find out why willpower isn't even necessary to be able to live a sugar free life!

  • This is part 2 of my chat with best-selling author Steven Gundry MD.

Listen to Part 1 of our chat here.

2500 years ago, Hippocrates said: "All disease begins in the gut".

In this episode, Dr. Gundry and I talk about which foods feed the good bacteria and improve your gut health...

and which foods feed your cravings!

You may not know a lot about fermented (probiotic) foods and drinks, because they aren't very popular in North America.

Or you may consume them, but you don't know how to make them yourself. I've been making drinks like kombucha and kefir, and foods such as yogurt, sauerkraut and kimchi for 10 years!

And Dr. Gundry explains why it's a good idea to cut sugar and eat more probiotics, prebiotics, and postbiotics - foods, not supplements!

  • Hi! It's me, Netta. And I have to tell you that all my life I was a real sweet tooth.

People made desserts just for me, and my whole identity was wrapped up in my love for sweet foods, desserts, chocolate, ice cream, whatever.

    Chocolate was my best friend.

And I also always had snacks on hand. Hidden in my drawer at work. Hidden away in my car. I used to always carry around snacks with me just in case I got hungry.

So back in 2015, when I got some life-changing advice to cut down or even cut out sugar, well... that seemed completely crazy to me!

And I said no. No. No. No. No way.

    So what changed?

Listen to this episode to hear how and why I ended up trying something that that I'd never tried before and that seemed crazy... and what I did that made living sugar free so much easier.

  • Cindy started swimming competitively when she was 10 years old. She didn't really think about what she was eating because she was just swimming so much.

So she ate whatever was presented to her.

But when she hit puberty, she became more muscular. Plus she had a swim coach who made her do weigh-ins and fat analysis.

That's when Cindy started comparing her body to others and tracking calories.

And very soon, she started labeling foods as "good" and "bad", but she didn't know any different because that's what everybody else was doing.

Cindy struggled with dieting restriction, and this type of restricted eating led her to experience body dysmorphia, and she started to dislike her body.

Listen to Cindy's inspiring story of how she went from disordered eating and hating her body to intuitive eating and having a better relationship with food... and with herself.

  • My expert guest this week is Dr. Bob Rakowski who is a seasoned functional medicine practitioner with over three decades of experience.

In this episode, Dr. Bob describes how as a teen growing up in the USA, he lived on milkshakes, cheeseburgers, french fries, and Mountain Dew. Tons of sugar!

By the time he graduated high school, he was overweight and lacked energy.

When Bob was just 18, he had an epiphany: he decided that for one week, he'd eat healthy. For him, it was a simple decision, an experiment that turned out really well.

And the results he experienced when he replaced fast foods with real whole foods led him to study chiropractic, kinesiology, acupuncture, clinical nutrition, and functional medicine.

For Dr. Bob, nutrition is the foundation of life. And sugar can disrupt everything.

Listen to find out why Dr. Bob says that "sugar's instant pleasure, but long term pain."

  • When she was younger, Karen never had a weight problem. She was tall and slim.

But then with the ups and downs of life, including several very stressful situations, her weight went up.

Covid and menopause definitely didn't help!

But two things did help Karen: cutting down sugar, and intermittent fasting.

Listen to Karen's inspiring story as she tells how she stepped out of the "calories in - calories out" diet paradigm that wasn't working for her.

Karen was open-minded enough to look at food, especially sugar, in a new way. And that's what made all the difference for her in her 40s and 50s.
