  • Welcome back!  Here on Episode 4, we're sitting down to discuss how watches from brands like Louis Vuitton, Montblanc, Bulgari, and Cartier have come up with some seriously interesting and heavy-hitting pieces.  Gone are the days when your simple LV handbag purchase might net you a fun, if uninspired timepiece.  In-house movements, the thinnest watches yet made, and pen/jewelry companies producing things that could make Rolex and OMEGA blush?  We unpack the top layer of what we've seen coming from these fashion houses of the last few years and consider if these are truly the pieces to go after when you find yourself on a three year waiting list with over $100,000 already spent just for the privilege.

It's an interesting concept and certainly a topic which has generated some excitement since we mentioned it a few weeks back.  What has spurred the investment required for some of these fashion houses to produce what we're seeing these days?  Are watches back on the menu if these types of "watchmakers" are pushing boundaries and willing to go in directions other brands typically aren't?  We explore these and other concepts relating to the resurgence and explosion of wonderfully unique, functional, and downright beautiful watches that have been recently released from all of our favorite brands we easily would have ignored 10 or 15 years ago.

If you like what we create and are interested in suggesting a topic or potentially joining us in our watch talk, reach out via Instagram or BlueSky:  @horologyrepubic (IG) & @horologyrepublic.com (BlueSky).  Brian can be found @watch.brian and Larry can be seen clowning on his handle @psywarwristcheck so give everyone a look, follow, and comment if you see something you like.  We are thrilled to have the reception and feedback we've received from those in the community and those just starting.  Talking watches is what we feel we do best, so we're happy to share what we create with you.  If you've subscribed to our podcast on whichever platform you prefer, thank you!

  • The absolute legend, Al Armstrong, joins us for his debut podcast episode to discuss his nearly half century career in the watch industry.  He knows everyone who's anyone at all the brands you've heard of and even ones you've only dared to whisper.  We talk about his extensive knowledge of Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, IWC, Hublot and Jean-Claude Biver's marketing genius, and that is just the beginning.  Al knows more than we can fit into a single episode, so he's agreed to come back for a few episodes and give us the inside scoop of life as an AD and let us in on some of the fun little watch industry secrets the Swiss may or may not keep hush-hush.

He's seen it all, done it all, and still has the shovel from all the buried bones we'll be uncovering here and in subsequent episodes.  A true gem, his knowledge runs deeper than the Mariana Trench and he's graced us with his time to discuss a few of the things he's experienced throughout his storied career.

Brian is also back to listen from the master when it comes to watch dealing and getting to know not only your customers but also how these brands operate with all the nuance of the irrational number pi. He joins us to discover what Swiss watch industry secrets Al is ready to let us in on.

Zac, Larry, and Brian all take on the topic of the milestone watch and try to define what a good milestone is, why it matters to mark them, and how to decide on the type (and price) of the watch.  Should the price really matter?  Maybe, maybe not.

This episode also mentions not buying any fakes and we stand by that.  No, it won't scratch that itch for you and no, it won't fly under the radar.  We can spot those from a long ways off and it's never a good look.

Make sure you give the website a look as we're in the process of redesigning it and transferring all the older articles over.  A work in progress but as we find new authors, topics, and photos, we'll continually update the site to reflect what's going on at Horology Republic.  www.horologyrepublic.com

  • Sitting down with Larry of @psywarwristcheck and Brian of @watch.brian, Zachary kicks off this new podcast endeavor with a look at TikTok being banned and what it'll mean for watch "influencers."  We also explored what it means to be a watch "influencer" and how, if any, realistic watch advice is bestowed upon the watchfam from them.

We then moved on to brief moments reflecting on Rolex AD waiting lists, whether one can bypass them, and if the wait is worth it if you're going to beat up your Rolex.  We subsequently made a decision that most of the watch media out there has a vested interest in you "shopping their story" and, therefore, aren't necessarily reliable for finding your next piece.

We also discussed how to tell other people, who are just getting into watches, which watches they should or shouldn't buy.  After all, one has to really like looking at their wrist to spend the amounts of money we're used to spending on them!
