Do I Have to Sell Shirts in My Print on Demand Business?
Shirts Are a Great Way to Start!Find an Item You Love Designing For as a TesterDissecting Sales Patterns (if never stops, lol)Shirts are FUN!
Welcome to the second season of Lissa Talks Print on Demand! A professional photographer since 2011 and a print on demand shop owner since 2022, I have so much to share with you!
Often, we hear a lot about selling shirts through print on demand. Personally, shirts are one of my bestsellers and I know they are for many different kinds of print on demand sellers through many different platforms. But! Does that mean you have to sell tee shirts, too?
Here's a few topics we are chatting about!
Want to know this episode in a quick summary? You know I've always got you!
Tee Shirts are a fantastic way to start with print on demand. Everyone loves a t-shirt! They can be silly, ridiculous, beautiful, funny, and just really creative. We can celebrate things we love with shirts and that is honestly so valuable when youâre starting a business, even if youâre inherently a graphic tee shirt lover.

Should I Zig Instead of Zag in My Print on Demand Business?
What is Zigging Instead of Zagging? How Can This Benefit Our Print on Demand Catalogs?Does This Mean Every Item Has to be Unique? How Can You Zig and Zag?
Welcome to the second season of Lissa Talks Print on Demand! A professional photographer since 2011 and a print on demand shop owner since 2022, I have so much to share with you!
Alright, this one is a really fun + in depth one today! I am so excited to chat with y'all about this topic! And the topic? Should I zig instead of zag in my print on demand business?
Here's some of our topics!Note: We touch on this topic in my interview with Lizzie Smiley on the How to Sell Your Stuff Podcast!
Want to know this episode in a quick summary? You know I've always got you!
When weâre starting our Print on Demand businesses and learning to design, itâs great to look at trends and see whatâs working. I think this is so essential in learning to see what other people are creating and itâs something we see in all facets of business and art. Young painters often recreate work from master painters to learn. The key to this? These recreations are creative exercises, not the end goal of what will be sold.Personally, I think the worst thing I see about Print on Demand - and selling on most platforms in general - is to follow trends. Iâll say it a million times: I love a trend. Give me a disco ball, give me bows, give me glitter, give me funny and chaotic animal puns. I love them! And I love incorporating trends into my work. But, as someone whoâs worked in a creative field for so long, I have to say this: Sometimes you need to zig when everyone else zags.

Is There a Way to Make Customer Message Easier in My Print on Demand Business?

Welcome to the second season of Lissa Talks Print on Demand! A professional photographer since 2011 and a print on demand shop owner since 2022, I have so much to share with you!
Today, I am so excited to chat with y'all about a really unique but also mundane topic: making messages easier in your print on demand business. Here's what we're chatting about!
Here's a link to the sample messages I mentioned in the podcast!
Want to know this episode in a quick summary? You know I've always got you!
When you start a print on demand (or any!) business, customer messages can be kind of scary. Iâll be totally honest: if you are selling at any volume, an awkward customer message will happen, just like a negative review will happen. This is totally normal and something all business owners deal with. And as you get used to answering customer messages? It gets so much easier!

When's The Right Time to Build a Website for My Print on Demand Business?
First! Sorry for the Unexpected Break!A Website is Your Brand's HomeBuilding a Website Can Take a Lot of Brain PowerCopying Listings is THE BEST!You'll Need to Drive Traffic to Your Website
Welcome to the second season of Lissa Talks Print on Demand! A professional photographer since 2011 and a print on demand shop owner since 2022, I have so much to share with you!
Hey!! This afternoon, we are talking about a really fun topic: When's the right time to build a website?
Here's a few topics we'll hit!
Here's a link to the tote bag listing I mentioned! I use the Swatch King app to create tie my listings together.
Want to know this episode in a quick summary? You know I've always got you!
When building your Print on Demand website, it's important to start building out once you know you have designs that sell. Your website is your brand's home and, because building a website can take a lot of brain power, it's best to start building your website once your designs and brand aesthetic have become second nature in your work flow. Most importantly? Building a website is so satisfying!
P.S. My microphone is a little wonky in this one!

What if My Print on Demand Designs Suck?
Your Designs Are Going to Suck at FirstIt's Okay if Your Designs Aren't Great!Listing Products Helps With GrowthSometimes, Bad Designs Sell! You Will Get Better if You Start and Stay Consistent!
Welcome to the second season of Lissa Talks Print on Demand! A professional photographer since 2011 and a print on demand shop owner since 2022, I have so much to share with you!
This morning, we are talking about a really important topic that can feel a little daunting but is also really exciting: Working with Print on Demand designs that may not be the best when you're first starting. Here's what we'll be chatting about!
And a link to that wolf shirt I mentioned!
Want to know this episode in one quote? You know I've always got you!
"When you start Print on Demand, there is a LOT to learn. You need to learn the platform youâre selling on, you need to learn what you like to design and, most importantly, you need to learn how to design. And when thatâs done? You need to get a read on how people receive your designs.Does that mean you should wait to start listing your design? Does it mean that you should overthink the designs? Does it mean that you should be embarrassed of what youâre creating. Absolutely not! I think it means the exact opposite: Get started! Because your designs? Theyâre probably going to suck. It might just be the first ten. It might just be the first hundred. Or it might be the first thousand. Whatever it is, thatâs okay!
In any creative - or honestly just business - field, it is very common to hear stories of success. Those stories are incredible and so inspiring, too! But! Just because someone else had things click immediately, it doesnât mean every seller will. What we can do, though, is pay attention to what works for our individual shops over time. When we start, our designs are not going to be incredible out of the gate."

"Once youâve started learning the ins and out of designing, when your first sales have been made, youâve added low cost and high cost items to your store, and you can spot a trend happening in your sales, itâs time to ask yourself: whoâs my ideal customer?
... When we boil down the idea of an ideal customer, it really comes down to this: itâs easier to build your designs, items, and vibe if you have a specific type of person youâre creating items for."

Offering High Cost and Low Cost Items in Your Print on Demand Business
Diversifying works best when you can identify buying patternsIf people love your items, they'll pay for themDifferent shirt brands have different costsSelling a sticker v selling a tee shirtWhy selling low cost items can build trust in your shop
Welcome to the second season of Lissa Talks Print on Demand! A professional photographer since 2011 and a print on demand shop owner since 2022, I have so much to share with you!
Today, we are talking about a really fun topic (as always!). That topic? It's about offering high cost and low cost items in your inventory as a way to build up your business and trust in your business, too! Here's a few of the topics we cover!
Want to know this episode in one quote? Hooray!
"When we start with print on demand, itâs really easy to get laser focused on one thing. Whether thatâs a specific niche, design style, or item type, itâs hard to pull away from the idea of what we want our shop and items to be. Once you start seeing buying patterns, though, youâll see your shop start to evolve. As you identify buying habits, youâll have more data and more room to grow. To do this, you donât need thousands - or even hundreds - of sales but, when you start to see patterns come to life, adding low cost and high cost items can really help with your shop growth. And when Iâm talking about shop growth? Iâm not necessarily talking about profit - Iâm talking about creating a consistent, awesome experience for your customers at different price points with different items."

Want To Know This Episode in One Quote? You Know I've Got You!
Creating collections - whether youâre literally making collections or just kind of grouping styles - is a great way to approach print on demand. First, it keeps design fresh and fun. Second, itâs easier to avoid burnout. Third, itâs an awesome way to expand your creativity. As a digital collage creator (lol) / shirt designer, I just really like making fun stuff. And if youâre here? Iâm guessing you do, too! Donât feel like you need to put yourself in a box when you hit a groove. Think of different styles as a way to grow and blend your inventory instead!

And that topic? Itâs this! How important is it to follow trends? If you start to listen to a lot of content about print on demand, youâll see a ton of content about trends. Thereâs absolutely value in this and itâs also a great place to start. However, if you want to build something that has more opportunity for expansion, youâll want to dig a little deeper. Welcome to the second season of Lissa Talks Print on Demand! A professional photographer since 2011 and a print on demand shop owner since 2022, I have so much to share with you!
Today, we are talking all about using print on demand as a way to expand your creative business. Here's a few things we'll address!
I Wanted to Diversify My IncomeI Didnât Want to Stop Shooting
Want to Know This Episode in One Quote? You Know I've Always Got You!
"Often, we see print on demand recommended as a side hustle or a way to leave your desk job. What if you want something different? As a longtime photographer, I knew two things:Yes! I wanted to diversify but I also didnât want to leave my career. While Iâve never had a traditional desk job, leaving my job was never something I wanted. Instead, I wanted to supplement my income in a different way. Personally, I set out to design a few photographer shirts. Instead, I ended up with two enormous Etsy shops. And itâs been fantastic! I feel so strongly that any creative - a designer, a painter, an illustrator, a photographer, a writer - can take print on demand and use it an a way to fit into their career.
Maybe for one person thatâs creating tote bags with your paintings. Maybe for another itâs a huge shop full of items with witty phrases. For me, itâs a bunch of fun collages that spiraled into a brand new genre of photography. Remember, thereâs no one right way to do anything. And the way print on demand is set up? The sky is really the limit!"

"When youâre selling print on demand, it make sense to focus on one platform oat a time. Once you have the feel of one, though, donât be afraid to build out!I also recommend testing on one marketplace - typically a platform like Etsy - to see what gets clicks and what doesnât. While selling is the ultimate goal, all data is good data. While data is definitely impacted by things like keywords, once you get your shop up and running, youâll have repeat buyers. Sometimes, I think Iâve crushed a design and no one clicks on it. Sometimes, I do a half hearted attempt at something and it has a favorite immediately. You never know until you know!"

Think of it like this: If you like designing, youâd be doing it anyway. While I donât think that every shop needs thousands of listings to be successful, I do think scaling your work is a great way to practice your design skill set, practice your listings, and even practice the way you create mockups and research keywords. You do not need to build your shop in a day and you are not a failure if it takes you years to build your shop up to what you want. This is normal! Unique Ways to Market Your Print on Demand Business
10 Ways to Market Your POD ShopHow More Advertising = More RecognitionMarketing Within Your Genre
Welcome to my limited series on Print on Demand! In our fifteenth (and final!) episode I discuss:Wanna know this episode in one quote? I got you!
"When youâre new to business, ads can feel like a bad word. When youâre new to POD, niching down can feel like a bad word. One great thing about POD is that you donât really need to niche down completely, especially if youâre selling on a platform. However, the more niched down you are, the easier itâs going to be to market.Hereâs what I mean! If you sell floral wall pennants with cute positive affirmations, you can easily start to brainstorm your dream customer. If you sell wall pennants and pillows and candles with no repeat designs or repeat themes, it will be harder to market what youâre creating. See this as an opportunity! The more you build your shop, the more opportunities youâre going to have, both in advertising and overall growth."

Welcome to my limited series on Print on Demand! In our thirteenth episode, I discuss ways to spot AI mockup photographs. Here's the biggest ways to spot them!NOTE: I am not here to bash AI. As a longtime photographer, though, I thought it would be helpful to address the ways I spot AI images.
Wanna know this episode in one quote? I got you!
"When youâre working with mockups, know that sometimes things are going to vary. For example, the color of a sand sweatshirt is going to look different in a brightly lit photo with a white backdrop than a sand sweatshirt on a dark background lit with a flash. With AI, though, weâre not talking about differences like this. Instead, we are talking about ways to spot AI when looking for your mockups. As a mockup seller, Iâve noticed an uptick of messages where customers wanted to double check that no AI was used in my mockups. Iâve also noticed an increase in conversations where my customers have felt disappointed when they bought another sellerâs mockup only to realize later that it is completely AI generated. Here's the ways I spot 'em! "

Welcome to my limited series on Print on Demand! In our twelfth (dang!!) episode, I talk about my experience as a photographer who shoots mockups and sells Print on Demand items. Here's some topic we discuss!Wanna know this episode in one quote? I got you!
"Ask yourself: What kind of product images are you drawn to? Subdued, minimalist images? Flashy images? Images with a lot going on? Thereâs a lot of information that simple sells and, while simple does sell, personality sells, too. Which is more your vibe? Do you like bright colors? How do you want your customer to feel when they see your mockup images? What kind of mockup best reflects your design? All these things will contribute to the style of mock you want. The possibilities are really endless!!"

All About Reviews in Your Print on Demand Business
Most Reviews Are Amazing!Take a Deep BreathA Bad Review is Not The End of Your ShopEveryone is Going to Have Their Own BiasKnow Your PlatformKnow When You are Going to RespondHave Form ResponsesHow to Improve Customer Experience
Welcome to my limited series on Print on Demand! In our eleventh episode (and first bonus episode!), we totally dig into reviews. Here's some of our topics!
Wanna know this episode in one quote? I got you!
"When you get a negative review, it can feel like a gut punch. While negative reviews can sting, know that sometimes they have nothing to do with you. Sometimes people are just having a bad day and leave a bad review. Also, sometimes people click the wrong stars and sometimes people leave a bad review when they know something is their fault or if something about the item was different than they expected, even if it was listed.
... "If you are seeing a consistent problem in your reviews, there is probably something going on. If you arenât seeing a consistent problem, there probably isnât a lot to worry about."

Total Disclosure: A few of these are affiliate links.
Literally forever obsessed with Printify. I use Printify for all of my print on demand printing and I'll never stop singing their praises. They're incredible!
For design work, I'm totally in love with Canva and also love finding extra artwork + fonts on Creative Fabrica and Creative Market.
For photography, I shoot with a Canon R6 and most of my mockup photographs are taken with the 35L or 50L. I do all of my editing in Adobe Lightroom and have since 2011! It's my jam!
