Dysregulation refers to the inability to regulate your brain function and nervous system, which has physical, mental, and emotional symptoms. With CPTSD, our history of trauma can leave our nervous system always engaged in fight or flight, and we become extra sensitive to stress and other triggers.
For CPTSD survivors, dysregulation is generally caused by a trigger. This can be a seemingly ordinary or mild event, but it triggers an unconscious flashback to the feelings of a past traumatic or emotionally upsetting experience.

3 years of struggling with my CPTSD, my healing has been difficult to handle. It affects my self confidence, my identity and it makes it very difficult for me to accept the reality of what CPTSD is to me. My parts often are triggered and take over, I as the adult am often blended with my Child Parts and so my reality of what life is and each situation I face is not what's actually happening. Believing my child parts skews the truth about most things in my life and I have to learn to see that reality isn't necessarily the truth.
I am learning and it takes a lot of effort, time and set backs to get there so I am sharing my struggles with you and showing all of you just how important it is to do your work and process.

Dealing with Complex Trauma like mine I have parts that I am struggling to update and gain their trust. I am making progress but they are not always willing to listen and be updated. I cannot be hard on them and I can't blame them or treat them with any disrespect because all that will do is create worse issues and they'll trust me even less. I have to be patient but I also have to work harder with my processing so that this will pay off as you get closer to healing. Izzy @izzy_michea, who is originally from Chile and residing in Buenos Aires, Argentina was eager to come onto this podcast and not only talk about her own CPTSD, Trauma and her past work but also openly discuss about how we need to normalize discussing our own Mental Illness without the fear of negativity, anger and blame from society and those close to us. People who are Mentally Ill and physically ill in Chile are not considered people according to their current constitution and even though they're working on creating a new one the fact that so many people in Chile's past faced persecution due to their own mental health problems was wrong!
People all over the world are too afraid to talk to others about their mental health because they believe that they will not get the help and support they sorely deserve. Even in countries like the United States, UK, Canada, and other developed countries many of us don't want to talk about it because they don't think people will believe them or help them without feeling burdened. This has to change and Izzy and I discuss on this episode about that exact issue.

"Window of Tolerance" a term coined by Dr. Dan Siegel is now commonly used to understand and describe normal brain/body reactions, especially following adversity. The concept suggests that we have an optimal arousal level when we are within the window of tolerance that allows for the ebb and flow (ups and downs of emotions) experienced by human beings. We may experience hurt, anxiety, pain, anger that brings us close to the edges of the window of tolerance but generally we are able to utilize strategies to keep us within this window. Similarly we may feel too exhausted, sad, or shut down but we generally shift out of this.

There may come a point in your life where you will decide to tell those in your close knit group of people you know that you have CPTSD, childhood trauma and are trying hard to get better and heal from your trauma. Whether it's a real close friend, extended family member, your Wife/Husband or BF/GF, you do have a lot to ponder on when you decide who gets this privilege?
Trust and confiding in that person is huge, so extremely important because what they say in response to you can be the difference between growing and becoming more triggered. Sadly, not everyone who suffers from CPTSD has a person that they can trust enough to tell them about their trauma and that isn't fair at all.

A trauma response is the reflexive use of over-adaptive coping mechanisms in the real or perceived presence of a trauma event. The four trauma responses most commonly recognized are fight, flight, freeze, fawn, called the 4 Fs of trauma.
When we experience something traumatic or have been exposed to prolonged stress, it causes part of our brain, the amygdala, to go into hyperdrive where we see and feel threats in nonthreatening situations, this causes us to act in ways that we don't understand and can leave us feeling like we no longer have control over ourselves. The [trauma] response is often based on what your brain thinks will help you survive the current situation.

Many who suffer from devastating CPTSD often choose self isolation rather than risk their safety in the world and re-experience the horrible trauma from their past. Doesn't matter if it is in their work environment, new relationships or just being out in public with a group or friends or strangers they often feel unsafe because they cannot trust those they are with and do not want to trigger any flashbacks, so it's simply easier to stay home and isolate themselves from any dangers, real or not. It's important for someone who uses self isolation as a method of soothing their pain and suffering to get the help they need in order to have any chance to live happy and healthy.
Seeing a therapist and getting the proper help, like Structural Dissociation theory will no doubt help a person with CPTSD begin to heal from their pain and suffering. I will be hard work and you will experience set backs but this will ultimately give you the power and strength to again feel freedom from your trauma and learn to live your life without fear.Listen to this episode about self isolation!Want to Contact Me?

Not your typical material when it comes to discussing CPTSD but I had a thought and I realized that there are songs out there I listen to that really does help me! It gives me motivation, inspires me to see things different, helps ease my mind and can stir up emotions that can be very helpful when it comes to processing and identifying your trauma and improve the healing you're going through.

Dealing with CPTSD will never be easy, all the flashbacks, triggers, emotions and fears can be overwhelming at the best of times. So having someone in your life, whether it's a close family member, or your partner can be so meaningful to you. Now that doesn't automatically mean things are easier, no. Our processing and healing is something that can only be done alone! Your partner just won't understand what you are going through and the struggles we face daily, which can be extremely hard on any relationship and not everyone is cut out to be with someone who is suffering from CPTSD. When we are fortunate enough to have that special someone who has an ability to show empathy, compassion, kindness and just BE there for you, it does make a difference in our lives! They are amazing and we know how difficult it will be!

I don't think anyone who hasn't experienced Childhood Trauma in their life can really grasp how hard life can be for a person dealing with CPTSD. The triggers, the flashbacks, the pain and suffering it creates! All the anxiety and stress not to mention what it will do to their relationships, careers, family, ability to enjoy the things many people take for granted. Accepting the reality of what having CPTSD means for themselves is such a big part of the healing process, without that you will likely fail to make much progress.
Yes it's hard and yes you will face setbacks and days where you don't want to do anymore but know that you will be ok! Stay strong and keep making the hard choices, you will benefit later on.

My CPTSD, along with my ADHD and Autism and now Anxiety has always played a role in my relationship with my GF. We have had a lot of struggles in the nearly 3 1/2 years being together and it may unfortunately end up coming to an end because of it. Even if I manage to get this under control and can heal it might be too late and this is very sad but it possibly could be for the better? I don't want it to end, it's too good when things are good but lately there hasn't been a lot of good to experience...

I present an encore release of this podcast episode originally published September 10th, 2022. It's a nice and simple episode about Emotional regulation affecting our Self awareness.
I have a very difficult time regulating my emotions when my stress and anxiety levels increase and it causes a great deal of issues! Imagine having a bunch of children hanging around you, tired, cranky, upset, hungry, wanting to play, etc. Now imagine trying to have a conversation with someone with all these children with you.. You are going to have a difficult time talking to ANYONE when you are dealing with child parts, the emotions and behaviors of a child are basically the same as your child parts and they want to come online and take over and be like those same children hanging around your legs as you struggle to deal with the oncoming stress and increased anxiety you feel because of the situation you find yourself in.
If you are not capable of regulating your emotions you will surely struggle to recognize the changes that are happening within you, mentally and physically. Those who have emotional regulation issues will likely be poor when it comes to their self awareness and will fail to notice things like being triggered, experiencing a flashback and allowing your child parts to behave on your behalf instead of taking control and leaving the situation to process and return later.

It started 10 months ago with the first episode of this new podcast, trying my best to talk about the struggles and pain I have faced with my past relationship. All the ups and downs, just like a rollercoaster!
There is a lot of progress that I've made since that time, definitely has not been easy and there have been a lot of triggers and set backs. When you begin to see the truth and feel what respect, dignity, compassion is like again it doesn't take long to become happy, safe and willing to take on the uncertainty of life.

When we finally break free from the chains of our abuse we often want to try and find ways to heal in order to have a chance to feel normal, to feel happy and trust someone again.
We all struggle and fail many times along the way, but when we experience growth as a human being after our battle with trauma it truly is an amazing and uplifting feeling, an experience that we truly do not want to let go of! It's so important for us as people who have suffered from CPTSD (Traumatic abuse) to grow and once again find out how true happiness, love, trust feels like inside of us!

On Today's episode on CPTSD I am fortunate enough to talk with founder of RE/ACT Tim Fletcher of Winnipeg, Manitoba who now resides in Windsor Ontario.
Tim Fletcher is the Founder and President of RE/ACT (Recovery Education for Addictions and Complex Trauma). He used his skills as a pastor and counsellor to develop this program to help the people he cared for overcome addiction.
During his early years, he realized that everyone has a loved one who struggles with addiction, and many people struggled with unrealized addictions and unhealthy coping techniques. He found that 97% of addicts also struggled from Complex Trauma (C-PTSD). After researching C-PTSD which was identified as, “A series of events that occur where a victim feels unsafe, and as such, develops mental disorders which inhibit them from coping in stressful or harmful circumstances”, he concluded that research was showing that there is a physical difference between the brains of those who grew up in loving and nurturing homes and those who didn’t – before any addiction became prevalent.
This was a really informative and extremely beneficial and educational opportunity for myself to learn more about CPTSD and I hope that you can learn so much more about your CPTSD as well with this episode!
