In today's episode of Magic in the Room, we continue our series on leading a team with the foundational skill leaders must have: the ability to build trust. It may sound cliche, but trust is the foundation of a high-performing team. In fact, Luke and Hannah argue that dogs have better lives and fewer people die when teams have high trust! When teams don't have trust, the result is lower performance, lower well-being, and ultimately, people leave. If you focus on one thing as a leader, it should be building trust.

Everyone’s leadership journey starts with leading themselves, which was the topic of Season 4 of Magic in the Room. The next step on the journey may be having formal leadership over a team of people. The rise of nihilism, the rejection of all moral principles, or the belief that life is meaningless can be challenging to discuss. However, if we are going to be Intentional Leaders, we must be willing to notice changes in the world around us. The good news is that once we see nihilism, we can use the principles of hope to bring about change in ourselves and our organizations.

Today, we continue our series on hope by replaying one of our favorite episodes, which lays the foundation for much of our thinking. Hope may seem intangible, but leaders can intentionally nurture hope in the people around them. In this episode, Chris, Hannah, and special guest Dr. Chan Hellman discuss the three elements of hope: Goals, Pathways, and Willpower. Leaders can develop hope by ensuring these three elements are present.
Chan M. Hellman is a professor of social work at the University of Oklahoma and Director of The Hope Research Center. He has written over 100 scientific publications and presented at numerous national and international conferences worldwide. Chan's research is focused on hope as a psychological strength, helping children and adults overcome trauma and adversity. Every time we get on an airplane, we hear, “Put on your oxygen mask first.” This is good advice, even if we are not in an airplane emergency! In this Magic in the Room episode, Hannah, Luke, and Chris discuss wellbeing in the next part of our Intentional Leadership series. It is easy to deprioritize our wellbeing when we are busy or want to take care of others first. However, this is an instance where taking care of ourselves allows us to serve others more effectively. What does it take for HR functions to be more focused on supporting people than being the principal's office? In this episode of Magic in the Room, Hannah and Luke sit down with Kari Gras to talk about how she has learned to make HR more human. This is not an easy task. It starts with trust, especially with the rise of remote work, a willingness to have hard conversations, and most importantly a commitment to treating people well.
Kari began her career in Human Resources working with Denise Tuohy in 2005, while employed by the Yellowstone Club. She started working in the HR and Payroll Department, which was a fast-paced and evolving department. With seasonal employees keeping the constant flow of paperwork a necessity, she was challenged to find better ways to refine and streamline procedures. Kari began consulting with small businesses in August 2013, following her entrepreneurial dream and making it a reality!
