    In part 2 of “Does My Child Have an Eating Disorder?” we interviewed Dr Maria Monge, MD, a pediatric eating disorder specialist, who offers our listeners a medical perspective on signs and symptoms of eating patterns in children and teens that could be worrisome for the child’s health and development. Dr Monge identifies what is concerning vs average weight changes, appetite fluctuations, and body image in growing children. Dr Monge gives concrete examples of concerning behavioral changes around food for parents to be aware of as they navigate the challenges of raising children in a culture that is hyper focused on health and bodies.

    In part 2 of “What is Picky Eating?” we interview Keira Oseroff, LMFT CEDS from the Ellyn Satter Institute on how parents can navigate feeding their children.

    Keira discusses the Division of Responsibility feeding modality of how families can have meals together where they are sharing food and conversation while also providing opportunities for children to practice trusting their bodies. In the Division of Responsibility a parents chooses: the “what,” the “when, and the “where” while the child chooses the “if” and “how much.” Keira identifies how this can look in real life settings and the challenges that occur in the division.

    This episode is full of wisdom on how parents can have a calm and confident approach to feeding their family while navigating diet culture messaging.

    Feeding our children becomes our primary goal as soon as the child is born, so it is natural that parenting begins with this obsession of how, what, and how much our children are eating. Feeding our baby is also a form of attachment bonding for both the child and parent and a parental instinct absolutely takes over when we suddenly become insanely preoccupied with our children’s input and output (remember having to track number of wet diapers in the hospital??) This natural, survival instinct ignited in parents combined with a culture obsessed with health and beauty and longevity, makes the perfect recipe for wanting to be perfect in how we feed our children. We find that this fear is mostly from the parents worried that they are not doing a good job or are projecting their own insecurities about food or their body onto their kids. So as a result, they pressure their child to eat a certain amount, eat specific foods, disregard their internal cues and preferences and monitor their bodies. What we are hoping for parents to get out of this episode today is trust. Trust in yourselves as parents, but mainly trust in your children.

  • The “Myth Busters” Series

    In this week’s episode we are switching gears from busting myths about adult bodies and chatting about kids bodies by busting the myth...that “kids today aren’t healthy!” This myth is one that most parents are so confused by: are their kids healthy? Is the food we are feeding our kids nourishing them? Are kids today too sedentary? Should parents be DOING something about their kids health?

    This is obviously a complicated myth to completely pull apart with multiple layers about the food industry, weight and BMI, and the overarching concept of health, so we touch on all of these but focus on how this myth has narrowed pediatric health to just diet and exercise. We are going to give you a brief history of this myth’s origins and then we are interviewing a passionate myth buster on kids health: Virginia Sole-Smith, author of The Eating Instinct and the newsletter Burnt Toast. A healthy child is more than the number on the scale: it is a child who can be in their body with confidence and self-respect, regardless of their abilities, size, race, or socioeconomic status.

  • The “Myth Busters” Series

    While we love chatting about the more generalized diet culture messaging, our clinical work and passion is in the treatment of Eating Disorders. We are passionate about helping bust stereotypes of Eating Disorders in order to help all people get the care they deserve and help providers become more proficient in their treatment approaches. The myth we are busting in this week’s episode is “eating disorders only happen to thin white women” and interviewing psychotherapist Nichomi Higgins, LMFT for further exploration of the harm perpetuated by this myth in society and treatment settings.


    We are taking a look at how healthism is rooted in white supremacy and how this white centered definition of health and nutrition is harmful due to its lack of awareness of all cultural food beliefs and by the definition of what is a disordered relationship with food. Eating Disorders occurs in everyone b/c everyone has to have a relationship with food to survive. This, in addition to a diet culture centered in the definition of the white beauty ideal as well as a society rooted in racism and oppression of so many bodies, perpetuates a complex relationship with food.   • The “Myth Busters” Series

    In this episode we are going to be busting a myth surrounding the impact of racism on body liberation and healthism. There is no body liberation and acceptance without all bodies being free to exist without prejudice, so anti-racism, and acknowledging the privileges you hold, are crucial topics to always be centered in the body acceptance conversation. Today’s myth that we are busting is “there is no hierarchy of bodies,” or the thought that, even if there is, “I am colorblind and I accept all bodies.”

    Now, we are two white podcast host’s so we acknowledge that our white privilege and lack of lived experience of being on the receiving end of racism definitely does not render us able to cover this topic effectively. So we are honored and thrilled to have our guest, Christyna Johnson, RD @encouragingRD join us to bust this myth! We highlighted the concept of how colorblindness and denial of inherent racism have continued to allow people to ignore racial discrimination, which continues to harm and impact people experiencing both macro and microaggressions as a result of the color of their skin. We explored how this impacts the interpretations of health, nutrition, and beauty on systemic and individual levels as well as how providers in the medical and mental health fields can be improve their care through unlearning and listening.
