  • In this episode, I speak with Mariya Shiyko, a best-selling author and coach, about overcoming cultural expectations, her journey of self-discovery, and her experiences in motherhood.

Mariya didnā€™t set out to write a memoir but accepted the calling once she discovered the power of women sharing their stories. She shares her writing journey and the ups and downs of her first literary birth. The act of sharing her voice and expressing herself led Mariya to confront the fear and conditioning she received growing up in Russia about using her voice. In rebelling against cultural expectations, such as being a child bearer and nothing more, she found wholeness within. Her unique journey of self-discovery allowed her to create a different kind of family than the one she was born into. She outlines the tools and mindset shifts that facilitated her growth. We then have a beautiful exchange about the softening motherhood can bring alongside its many challenges and joys.

  • In this episode, I speak with Marnie Marmet, the Founder of Zenful Life Coaching, about how she discovered her authentic voice, her go-to self-care rituals, and the journey of writing her memoir.

Self-care and internal work is an ongoing process. By sharing how Marnie lost her voice as a child to actively reclaiming it as an adult and a mother, Marnie reminds us that no one is perfect and we all have much to learn. One part of her unfolding process was taking a memoir writing class by chance, which led to her writing and publishing a book! We discuss how the publishing process forced her to confront some of her negative internal voices, some of which she had not even realized were there. She shares that undergoing this work in front of her children was one of the best choices she could have made as a parent. Modeling the importance of taking care of yourself internally is one of the healthiest things we can do as parents. Marnie walks us through some of her favorite daily self-care routines, such as getting up early, being in nature, and having boundaries with electronics. She reminds us how important it is to put our stories out in the world because we never know the impact they will have on others.

  • In this episode, I speak with Heather Hester, the Founder of Chrysalis Mama, about how she has mothered two LGBTQIA+ teens, how best to support our children, and how to prioritize love.

Heather shares that her journey as a Founder began when her son Connor came out as LGBTQIA+. She then realized she did not have the tools to support him. In learning the importance of expressing unconditional love to her children, she encourages parents to educate themselves, prioritize their childā€™s mental health, and ensure their childā€™s school environment is affirming.

She offers practical tips for parents of LGBTQIA+ teens for when they come out and how to provide continued support along their journey. She acknowledges some of the mistakes she made along the way, too. Her journey has involved breaking cycles from her conservative upbringing and learning to trust her inner voice. • In this episode, I speak with Jamie Engelhardt, a brand strategist and mother of three, about solo parenting, breaking generational mother codes, and embracing queerness.

Jamie shares where sheā€™s at on the rollercoaster ride of parenthood, holding many types of tension and opposites at once, and what she sees as some of the most significant generational differences in how she was raised compared to this generation. Thereā€™s a lot to learn in recognizing that our childrenā€™s childhood isnā€™t the one we grew up in.

Jamies recalls a healing experience in Mexico where women from her lineage revealed to her in a vision that she is at her most free when mothering herself and her children. We discuss how she is actively rewriting the mother codes in her family and breaking generational cycles. Some of those new codes include expressing love to her children, coming out as queer, and living deeply in her authenticity.

  • In this solo episode, Dr. Gertrude walks into the dark. She challenges common fears around the dark, explores the dark wisdom of the feminine, and honors the dark as a season of growth.

As the nights grow longer in the Northern Hemisphere, Dr. Gertrude embraces the change in light. She explores how much of the Western world has come to vilify the dark and shroud the unknown as evil. She shares her personal journey with darkness and debunks outdated myths. Across cultures, these seasons are essential for accessing a different part of the self.

Dr. Gertrude emphasizes the importance of balancing light and dark, like yin and yang. The darkness of the womb, ever-present in the feminine, contains potent knowledge for healing and growth. Society's overemphasis on light, or masculine, characteristics has led to imbalances. The perpetual availability of light doesnā€™t always serve us. Sometimes, the darkness holds the answers.

  • In this episode, I speak with Amri Kibbler, the co-founder and Chief Community Officer of Hello Mamas and HeyMama, about cancerā€™s lessons, the value of motherhood, and crafting new mothering narratives.

Amriā€™s community, Hello Mamas, has impacted over 400 million moms worldwide. She shares her career journey from content creator to community organizer. Her cancer diagnosis was the first time she really explored self-care and self-exploration, an experience she calls both the best and worst thing to ever happen to her. This eventually led her to found HeyMama, an organization centered around mental and physical self-care for moms.

We then discuss how, in our culture of isolation, itā€™s more important than ever that women and mothers donā€™t settle for unfulfilling company but find groups that are truly replenishing and satisfying. Prioritizing meaningful relationships is a beautiful thing to experience and model for our children. Amri leaves us with her wisdom about creating value-aligned communities and mothering oneself.

  • In this episode, I speak with Faith Laux, a somatic sex and relationship coach, about the taboo and misconceptions around kink, normalizing conversations about sexuality, and pleasure as a healing modality.

Think you know what kink is? How about your erotic language? Faith beautifully defines the spectrum of kink, its powers to heal and powers to pleasure. We discuss the relationship between embracing kink and doing shadow work. She then shares the most foundational piece of having great sex. Consent, safety, and communication truly play an unnegotiable role in ecstatic experiences.

Faith explains what good kink and good parenting have in common and an exercise for teaching our children to deeply understand the importance of consent. She then explains that the ability to give and receive pleasure is ultimately about accessing a flow state. She blends kink and pleasure into a healing modality which she offers through her coaching and Kink Curious workshop.

  • In this episode, I speak with Dr. Jessica Lederhausen, a dentist and public health advocate, about how she is rewriting her mother and grandmother codes, embodying her values, and publishing her recent book, Oral.

Jessicaā€™s journey of mothering is distinctly different from the norm. She embraces being different from whatā€™s expected of a ā€œnormalā€ mom and imparts the importance of maintaining personal values to her children. Even as a grandmother, she fully embodies the role of grandmother that works for her, which isnā€™t the same as the stereotypical spoiling-the-grandchildren one!

Jessica shares how she navigated the differing mother codes of Sweden and the U.S. We discuss what itā€™s like to grow up in a culture that doesnā€™t outwardly discuss values but picks them up by the behavior of the people around you. We then discuss her latest book, Oral, and the accompanying course she recently launched, each a significant birth in her life!

  • In this episode, I welcome back Elizabeth Tuazon. We discuss her current stage of motherhood, how the universe always wants us to succeed, and her familyā€™s upcoming transitions.

With Elizabeth Tuazonā€™s daughter, Lyla Rose, now a year and one-month-old, I checked in with her for a motherhood update. Elizabeth shares how she celebrated her one-year anniversary of giving birth with a Montessori Walk Around the Sun. It was a beautiful time to reflect on the milestones and growth she and her family made in the last year.

We then dive into the lessons learned by exercising our free will to make choices and question things, even things accepted as normal or standard, like what a pregnant woman is allowed to eat or why babies are required to have their iron tested. Elizabeth has two significant transitions ahead: an au pair and a doctoral program. Elizabethā€™s willingness, grace, and curiosity with which she accepts newness and every step of motherhood never fails to amaze me.
