One in five new mums and one in ten new dads are affected by perinatal depression and anxiety, which impact approximately 100,000 families in Australia each year.
In this conversation, Julie Borninkhof, CEO of PANDA (Perinatal Anxiety & Post Natal Depression) discusses the complexities of perinatal anxiety and depression. She highlights the importance of recognising the signs and symptoms, the impact of circumstantial factors on mental health, and the need for support. Many of us put our challenges down to other factors and early parenthood without getting the support we need. We discuss how this can impact our relationships and possible relationship breakdowns. The discussion also covers the significance of birth experiences and the necessity of seeking help early.

Lucy had a rock bottom moment one boxing day, waking up in the spare bedroom without any memory from the night before- it was here she realised she had a significant problem with alcohol and begain the journey to sobriety. Through this journey she created a program for others called Thrivalist Sobriety- which she has since sold, however now owned by another incredible coach. Amy Crellin became a mum at 22 and a single mum at 24. In this episode we chat about some of the challenges of finding balance with the other parent and the initial fear of becoming a single mum. In this episode we have a heartfelt conversation with Renee Staska, a solo mum of three children living with childhood dementia as well as a proud ambassador for the Little Heroes Foundation. A foundation in South Australia that raises much needed funds to support children suffering from a physical or mental illness.
In this chat Renee opens up about the raw reality of caring for all three of her children, discussing the symptoms, the progression of the disease and its impact on her family's life. She talks about the struggle to accept the diagnosis and the fear of the unknown future as the average life expectancy of children with childhood dementia is late teens.
We are in awe of Renee’s story and the life she is creating for her children to have the as much of the same opportunities as other children. Many times through this episode we are than back by the strength and resilience that Renee finds to show her children the magic in the smallest of moments in each day.
