Cases of Parricide for Love & the Naked Body on Christmas Day

In today’s episode we look at two Christmas cases from Liverpool.
Our first case from 1855 involves Mary who lives with her father. Mary is in love with a young man from Liverpool. Alas, Mary’s father does not approve. The argument goes on for some time. Mary is then invited to visit her boyfriend in Liverpool for Christmas. Her father refuses stating categorically that she is not allowed to see him at all. Mary buys rat poison.
In our second case from 1919, the body of a woman is found outside in an alleyway, stripped of all clothing. Police are immediately on it despite the holiday.
For those who like the unusual: We have two stories in our end of episode further particulars segment. The first case involves the body of a woman dragged out of the river – her face is deeply scarred. The body is identified and the daughter arrested – she confesses. But the alleged dead woman shortly afterwards arrives at the police station.
Our second story landed in our laps by chance! For our American cousins – a report from 1919 explaining how much crime there is in America and the reasons behind it.

Her parents do not believe it. Ivy, who spoke with her mother daily, was a devoted parent and had never given any indication of any additional relationships. As Ivy seems to have vanished utterly, her parents after attempting to speak with her husband, contact a solicitor and the police.
Doing their due diligence, a policeman goes to visit the residence that had been Ivy and Thick’s home and notices a peculiar smell. Pursuing the smell, he goes into the loft and sees a cavity within the wall. Inside are bloodstained bedclothes, a bloody pillowcase all encasing 6 to 7 body parts. It is Ivy.

The Curious Case of The Liverpool Sack Murder
News of the Times Episode 423 | 1913
In today’s episode it is December 1913 in Liverpool, and a passing fisherman upon the canal spots a sack floating in the water.
Curious, he fishes the sack out of the canal only to find the horrifying remains of a woman, doubled over, with an additional sack placed on her head. Two iron weights had been placed in the sack no doubt with the hope of keeping the grisly remains hidden at the bottom of the canal.
The woman is wearing an unusual charm necklace making it easy to identify her. Tracks of a hand cart to the bank also help lead police to a company less than a mile away. Here, upon questioning staff there, police immediate find their two suspects.
However, one of the suspects has gone into hiding. The chase is on not only to retrieve the suspect before he make his escape, but also to understand the motive behind the killing. Was it lust? Or possibly money, although the loss of cash is negligible.
We take a look at the case of the Liverpool Sack murder that made the national papers and gripped the residents of Liverpool.
For those who like the unusual, todays further particulars story explores the case, also from 1913, of the person who dressed up as Satan in order to steal a body. Here at the News of the Times team, we lack this kind of vivid imagination to make these kinds of stories up.
