  • Performance reviews seem to have fallen out of fashion in many companies, particularly those companies that focus purely on people’s short-term needs and wants.

This does your people a huge disservice, because they never gain real clarity on what’s expected of them, and whether their performance is in line with those expectations.

No performance review process is perfect and, like any tool, it can be incredibly valuable in the right leader’s hands, and incredibly destructive in the wrong leader’s hands.

If you want to take a deeper dive into how you can give people real clarity on their performance, have a listen to Ep.96: Performance Reviews.

  • Episode #315 // I frequently mention high performers in passing, but I don’t often talk about how to find them, how to keep them, and how to get the most out of them.

Many teams never get to experience the joy of having a star performer in their midst. And the thought of leading a real superstar can be daunting… especially if you aren’t confident in your leadership ability, or if you don’t have the appetite to stretch every individual in your team.

Let’s face it, genuine high performers provide a stark contrast to some of your other team members, and many leaders aren’t prepared to face into the reality of that massive performance differential, let alone do something about it!

In this episode, I take a closer look at how to attract high-end talent, and how to liberate their rare capability and impact to create massive value.

I've also created a great exercise for you to do (free of course), called 5 Key Strategies to Maximize the Impact of Your Star Performers. Download that and do the activity at www.yourceomentor.com/episode315.

  • Moment #85 // Enabling perfectionism creates all sorts of problems. Even though the quest for perfection sounds noble, in reality, it's mostly driven by fear of failure! It adds an enormous amount of time, cost, stress, and complexity to any piece of work, without any material improvement in the outcome.

A quest for excellence is infinitely more useful: be smart, make good decisions, and keep moving. This is why, instead of perfectionism, you should think about deploying layers of excellence – it will increase your likelihood of getting a near-perfect result.

If you want to take a deeper dive into overcoming the negative impacts of perfectionism, have a listen to Ep.285: When Profits Create Problems.

  • Episode #314 // Politics exists in every organization. Some companies tolerate it more than others, and it’s not uncommon for ego-driven leaders to encourage poor behavior from their most ambitious people.

Leaders who tolerate or encourage political maneuvering will find that it has a direct impact on team culture, cohesion, and performance. But politics is so ingrained in human nature that it can be really hard to identify and neutralize.

Politics is the path that many leaders choose when they can’t deliver results… What they lack in ability, they make up for in ambition, so they find another way to climb the ladder… and that’s often by using politics to climb over the top of their unsuspecting peers.

This is just a fact of life, and the rough and tumble of office politics becomes more intense with every layer you move up.

The $64,000 question is, “How do you lead at your peak, and focus on the things that truly matter, without being blindsided by office politics?”

I begin the episode by defining clearly what a political player looks like, so that you can spot them more easily. I discuss how political slurs, no matter how outlandish, can outweigh objective reality. And I finish with some tips for building bullet-proof networks as a primary defense against political attacks.

When you’re faced with that proposition, it’s really important to recognize that you can’t expect the same people to do things in a radically different way.

If you want a culture change to be successful, the trick is to blend the best of the existing capability and culture with new ways of thinking, behaving, and performing.

  • Episode #313 // We’ve all heard the stories about the people who started entrepreneurial ventures quite late in life, and found success at a mature age. If nothing else, this serves as a reminder that, no matter how many opportunities you think you may have missed, there will always be more in the pipeline… if you’re open to them.

There’s a lot we can learn from those who’ve gone before us, if we choose to pay attention and apply the principles to our own career growth and personal progression.

In this episode, I take a look at the mid-career stagnation problem. I’ve seen it hit many leaders in my time, and many of them haven’t got the faintest notion about how to get out of that rut.

I begin by looking at some examples of people who achieved real success quite late in life. I examine some of the advantages that more mature leaders have, as well as some of the unique anchors that hold them back. And I finish with four areas that you can focus on, in order to break the pattern of stagnation.

In the past, it was considered unacceptable to bring personal issues into the workplace. These days, though, we’re encouraged to bring our whole selves to work.

This episode is super-practical… I go beyond my more general guidance on handling conflict to give you some nuanced tips for nailing each of the 5 different types of hard conversation that you’re inevitably going to be faced with as a leader.

I start with some overarching principles, just to make sure we’re all on the same page, particularly if you’re fairly new to my content.

Then, I dive right into the 5 hardest conversations. All of them are slightly different, so this could well be one of the most practically valuable episodes I’ve ever recorded.

This is why the number one predictor of successful transformation is your ability to shift the culture. The only way to do this is to set incredibly high expectations for the leaders below you – and that requires a superhuman level of energy, commitment, and resolve.

  • Episode #311 // In this episode I cover 12 things that you’ll instinctively resist on your leadership journey. Not all of you will resist all of them, obviously. But I suspect that you’ll instinctively try to avoid or ignore at least a few of these principles.

There’s no doubt in my mind that these principles are rock solid. They’re like gravity… they operate the same way on all of us, whether we believe in them or not! And they will ultimately have a huge bearing on how successful you are, as a leader.

The episode is pretty simple… I outline each of the 12 hard leadership truths, one-by-one. I’ve also created a free PDF downloadable, so that you can keep a cheat sheet handy.

  • Moment #81 // During the pandemic, work became performance art for many, as they pursued the goal of looking busy, rather than actually delivering real, value-adding work.

This wasn’t a particularly new innovation: there’s always been a fair share of people in the office who did exactly this—appearing to be busy while achieving little.

For leaders, it has definitely become trickier to identify and deal with these people than it was in the past.

How can you tell when someone is substituting the demonstration of their own busyness for real work that produces real value?

  • Episode #310 // Join the free bootcamp here! Over the last several months, a lot of leaders have told us that their companies are hunkering down, in a virtual promotion freeze… so, we poked around to see if there was any data to support these anecdotal observations, and came across an interesting statistic.

According to Bloomberg, of the 68 million white collar workers in the US, only 1.3% were promoted in the first quarter of 2024 — the lowest percentage in 5 years.

At times like these, it’s even tougher to stand out, which is why we decided to run a free 3-day bootcamp, 10x-ing Your Promotability, where I outlined my three fail proof strategies to deal with an ultra-competitive labor market.

In this episode, we replay Day 1 of the Bootcamp, which covers the first strategy — Elevate Your Leadership Presence.

Apart from a few interesting stories from my own career, I covered why your leadership brand is so important… and I gave you a practical tool to help you clarify and communicate that brand to the people around you.

  • Moment #80 // Hiring really good people has always been hard. There’s serious competition for talent in many industries, and limitations in your potential candidate pools that arise from your geographical footprint, your industry, and the public perception of your brand.

But, even when you do get the right people to turn up at your front door, there are factors at play that may prevent you from achieving the best hiring outcome.

How do you ensure that you’re getting access to the best talent, and working out who’s the best fit for your team?

  • Episode #309 // We rarely do interviews on No Bullsh!t Leadership. But when Patrick Lencioni’s team reached out to us earlier this year, we jumped at the opportunity to have him join us on the podcast.

Patrick Lencioni is a global thought leader, who has established himself as one of the preeminent thinkers of our generation in the field of leadership and organizational behavior.

Pat has written more than a dozen books, which are incredibly easy to absorb and apply – some of the most practical content you’ll find. His seminal work, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, has sold over 3 million copies, making it one of the highest-selling business books ever written.

With such an impressive body of work, which he adds to every week with his two podcasts, At the Table and  Working Genius, it was hard to know where to start. I decided to have an open conversation with Pat about some of the key issues that are facing leaders in 2024 and beyond.

Our conversation went for well over an hour, so this episode is the first part of the interview, where we discuss hybrid work and courage in leadership.

  • Episode #308 // It’s pretty rare that you’re faced with a decision that’s final or irreversible. And when one comes along, it’s normally pretty easy to recognize — you can sense the gravity of the moment, and the potential consequences that lie ahead.

But, as I look back on my experiences, some of the most significant decisions I’ve ever made, in terms of my life direction, didn’t seem to be that big a deal at the time. I made them using a liberal dose of gut feel, not suspecting for a moment how consequential they would ultimately turn out to be.

I recently had occasion to think about one of the most pivotal moments in Emma’s life, which also had a profound effect on mine. For those of you who don’t know, Em is my daughter. She’s also the producer of the No Bullsh!t Leadership podcast, and CEO of our business, Your CEO Mentor.

I was reflecting on the path that led us to where we are now, and it took me back to a brief but pivotal moment which, to tell you the truth, could have gone either way.

This episode is packed with examples, including Em’s story. I hope that it helps you to recognize these unexpected moments when they arrive in your career, and to respond accordingly.

You can never know, at the time, how critical these decisions will be… which is why you have to be prepared for every moment!

Many unintentionally create a family culture. This might feel really nice, but it’s often mutually exclusive with the disciplined, constructive culture that ultimately underpins exceptional performance.

  • Episode #307 // There’s a lot to be said for having confidence. It’s an essential ingredient for any leader who aspires to lift their people to greater heights.

Without confidence, it’s difficult to effectively execute on even the most fundamental tasks that competent leadership requires.

Confidence is incredibly valuable… and you can’t fake it!

But, I feel as though it’s been getting a bad rap lately — confidence comes with a range of negative connotations, and those who are less confident often mistake it for insincerity, bluster, or even the inappropriate use of power.

My observation, made over many years operating at the highest levels, is that confidence is an essential ingredient of high performance leadership.

This is why it’s so important to focus on your own level of confidence, to understand what you need to do to increase it, and to know how to keep the dark side of confidence at bay.

  • Moment #77 // We’re all driven, to a greater or lesser extent, by unconscious biases. These invisible forces hijack our cognitive processes, and impair our decision-making capacity.

The only way to break free from the bonds of unconscious bias is to develop an acute awareness of the ones that affect you… especially when the pressure is on!

In this Moment, I look at five of the most common biases that I see play out, even in the most intelligent, capable, experienced executives I work with.

If you want to take a deeper dive into how you can avoid the fallacy of subconscious bias, have a listen to Ep.192: Avoiding Common Biases.

  • Episode #306 // I’ve always been fascinated by people who transcend the limits of human performance, in any field. They lead the way, expanding our perspective on what’s possible and giving us something to aspire to.

When we look at the microcosm of our own team’s performance, we are the ones who get to choose the standard, so it’s useful to reflect on what each of us perceives to be exceptional performance.

Unfortunately, so many leaders bandy around the term “high performance” that it’s at risk of becoming a meaningless cliché.

How do we give ourselves a reality check? What do we use as a benchmark? How do we calibrate our efforts and set our own sights on what we might consider to be superior performance?

Stopping every so often to take a few deep breaths and look at what the best of the best are doing in their quest to achieve world class performance helps us to calibrate our own standards.

In this episode, I take a closer look at some of the truly exceptional performers who have redefined what’s possible — and I give you some step-by-step, practical guidance that you can action immediately, in order to move just that little bit closer to true leadership performance.
