Wendy Gossett helps parents understand their children by using temperament psychology and neuroscience. She has over 10,000 hours of experience in education, both in the classroom and corporate sector.
Even though she holds a Master’s degree in education, she struggled to understand her neurodivergent and oppositional kids. Inspired by her experience using Myers Briggs and the Enneagram with business teams, she spent over a decade researching temperament pattens to help family teams. She is a best-selling author and host of the Not So Normal Parenting podcast.
Her podcast is entitled Not So Normal Parenting because not only are she and her kids neurodivergent but some of her life experiences, such as driving off a cliff her wedding night and going viral for embarrassing her seventeen-year old son by dancing on a snowy and jammed interstate, fall into that category. In addition to being talked about by Hoda Kotb, the BackStreet Boys, and Princess Kate, even U2 singer Bono mentioned the incident in his autobiography.
Because Wendy herself has struggled as a helicopter parent, a cranky parent and an embarrassing parent, she wants to help other parents struggle……..a little bit less!
In this episode, we continue our series on the Enneagram's instinctual subtypes by focusing on the social instinct—the drive that leads us to connect, belong, and find our place in the world. Social types bring a unique energy to relationships, excelling at creating harmonious environments, whether organizing family events or fostering friendships. We'll explore how to identify social tendencies in yourself, your partner, or your children and understand how this instinct can enrich relationships.
Plus, learn why some Enneagram types with this instinct may not fit the typical descriptions and discover the importance of balancing the social drive with other instincts. Listen in to gain a fresh perspective on the social instinct and its powerful influence on your relationships and sense of self.

In today’s episode, we’re diving into the Reactivity Triad, which includes Types 4, 6, and 8—personalities that tend to respond to stress with emotional intensity and immediate reactions. These types externalize their feelings when they don’t get what they want or when their needs are unmet, often displaying frustration, anxiety, or anger. We’ll explore the three key aspects of how these types cope: how they process emotions outwardly, why they react so strongly, and what they seek from others through their emotional responses.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
How Type 4s express deep emotional intensity, often seeking validation and understanding from others when they feel unseen or misunderstood. How Type 6s react with anxiety and doubt, testing loyalty and seeking reassurance in moments of insecurity or uncertainty. How Type 8s respond with assertiveness and anger, seeking strength and control in their environment to avoid feeling vulnerable. We’ll also share four practical strategies to help you support your reactive child and navigate their emotional outbursts:
Acknowledge their feelingsProvide reassurance or understandingTeach emotional regulationMaintain your own calm presenceJoin us as we uncover how these intense emotional reactions can be understood and managed, allowing for deeper connection and growth within the family.

Today’s episode tackles the critical issue of smartphone use and excessive screen time among children, specifically focusing on Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2012. As a parent to two "Zoomers," the host shares personal insights and expert research to confront the rising mental health challenges faced by today's youth. This discussion will cover:
Impact on Brain Development: Highlighting how screen time can negatively affect the frontal cortex of children's brains, impairing impulse control and mirroring the effects seen in substance addiction.
Social and Emotional Consequences: Examining the decline in face-to-face interactions among children, which contributes to increased feelings of loneliness and depression, as personal connections are replaced by digital interactions.
The Addictive Nature of Screens: Discussing the need for genuine real-life connections and addressing the compelling allure of screens that often distract from these vital interactions.
Responsible Screen Use: Offering strategies to help parents develop plans where technology supports developmental goals rather than detracts from them. This includes setting boundaries and being proactive about screen time management.
Practical Measures and Support: Providing actionable tips and resources to help parents create a balanced digital environment in their homes. This support aims to mitigate the adverse effects of screen time while promoting beneficial developmental and social activities.
Drawing insights from Jonathan Haidt’s "The Anxious Generation," this episode serves as a call to action for parents to engage deeply with their children’s digital habits and help foster a healthier, more balanced approach to technology use. Whether dealing with a young child’s first foray into digital devices or managing a teenager’s screen habits, this episode offers valuable guidance and support for navigating the challenges of the digital age.

INFJ’s are one of the rarest types representing less than 1% of the population. Today my interview is with Elizabeth Reed Watkins who just published a memoir of her life growing up in Maine entitled the Maine Thing. We will discuss how she parents her four very different kids and she gives advice for parents with an INFJ child. She is also an Enneagram Type 3, so this episode will resonate with all the over achievers out there as well. Going back through her journey we talk about vivid dreams, imagination, friendships, sports, learning, deep emotional struggles and balancing her high ideals and need to achieve with the need to stay grounded. Stay tuned to the end because we have a mini coaching session to help all the over achievers out there, and I am one of them, learn to be easier on themselves. In true INFJ style, Elizabeth is truly vulnerable and authentic in this interview. Here are five main takeaways:
Encourage Imagination and don’t accuse them of lying
Let them daydream and have time to recharge
Realize they are an introvert and highly sensitive person and help them with coping strategies
Choose their activities carefully; Individual sports may be better for them than team sports
Pay attention to their activity level because overachieving can be a red flag
I just worked with parents who were looking at their ISTP Enneagram Type 8 lion daughter with a distorted lens. They were seeing her leadership capabilities and determination as demanding, her ability to problem solve as manipulation and they were expecting her to be a rule follower like her brother rather than an independent thinker. Connection and Control are the two most important needs for any child. They just purchased my Thrive program so they can reframe the way they see and work with their kids and have more peace in their home. You can take the first step by going to WendyGossett.com and taking my free child temperament test for one of your kids. I evaluate the results myself which is what sets it apart from other tests. If you want to strengthen your family connections, I know I can help!

Do you have a child who is facing college in the next few years or a child who has dropped out? Many students drop out of college early because they weren’t ready. Maybe you know that the classroom is not your child’s happy place or your child hasn’t done their best in school. This episode discusses how college is not the only path to consider for your child’s future. Sometimes practical lion types and other perceiving free-spirited, creative or neurodivergent types prefer non-traditional paths. Episode 2 talks about the four people patterns and my last two episodes have been about type 7’s who tend to have multiple interests and may have ADHD or similar tendencies.
A job is just one type of income stream out of 8 that you and your soon to be adult child can consider. Not only that but the job landscape is changing at a rapid speed. There will be jobs available when they graduate from college that don’t exist when they graduate from High School.
Find out the two main ways young adults approach this major life transition and how you can help them. If you are wondering how to find the right educational path for your child, tune into this episode where I interview Emma B. Perez career coach, author of What’s the Point of School and creator of LifeQuest which is a gamified program to take your child from undecided to excited. Before we start this episode I want to remind you that the first step is to take my free child temperament test at WendyGossett.com and schedule a free chat so we can talk about your child’s result. I evaluate the test personally which is what sets it apart from other free tests on the internet.

In this episode, we explore Enneagram Type 6, often called the Loyalist or the Loyal Skeptic. Type 6s, part of the head center, are concerned with safety and security, often struggling with fear and anxiety. We discuss five common thought patterns they face: Anxiety, Indecision, Insecurity, Distrust, and Overwhelm.
Key Highlights:Anxiety: Overthinking worst-case scenarios is common for Type 6s. Examples include Mike Wazowski from Monsters, Inc. and Marlin from Finding Nemo. Strategies to cope include facing fears directly, using grounding techniques, and practicing reality checking.Indecision: Chronic second-guessing affects Type 6s, who often prioritize others' happiness over their own choices. Focus on positive outcomes and learning from decisions can help.Insecurity: Seeking constant reassurance and feeling inadequate is typical. Woody from Toy Story illustrates this. Self-compassion and sharing insecurities with trusted friends are vital.Distrust: Difficulty trusting themselves and others can lead to paranoia. Phobic and counterphobic subtypes show different behaviors. Encouraging small steps and clear communication helps build trust.Overwhelm: Anxiety can lead to paralysis and inaction. Inside Out's Riley and Anna from Frozen 2 show this. Calming strategies and focusing on small, actionable steps are effective.Practical Tips:Reframe anxious thoughts by confronting fears.Build decision-making confidence by celebrating small victories.Address insecurity with self-compassion and support from friends.Cultivate trust gradually with clear boundaries.Manage overwhelm with grounding techniques and incremental actions.Join us for insights on Type 6, whether you are one, love one, or parent one, and learn how to manage and transform these thought patterns effectively.

In this episode, we dive into Enneagram Type 5, known as "The Investigator," exploring their unique traits and challenges. Whether you're parenting a Type 5 or are one yourself, you'll relate to their deep introspection and desire for knowledge, often likened to feeling like a unicorn in a world of more outgoing personalities. Type 5s are intensely private and introverted, preferring solitary activities to conserve their emotional and intellectual resources.
We discuss their core struggle, termed Avarice, which isn't about greed but rather a fear of depletion—be it emotional, energetic, or informational. This fear manifests as a reluctance to engage fully in social settings or to share their thoughts and feelings openly. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for reframing their top negative thoughts, such as fear of incompetence and distrust of the outside world, into more constructive emotions and actions.
Join us as we explore how neurodivergence, including potential links to the autism spectrum, can influence the Type 5 experience. We also touch on strategies for parenting and supporting Type 5 individuals, emphasizing the importance of respecting their need for privacy while gently encouraging social interaction.
For a deeper dive, check out Episode 18 on Transforming Your Thoughts, which complements this discussion on understanding and fostering growth through the Enneagram's insights into unconscious thought patterns.

In this episode I interview Erin Lockwood who travels all over the world with her family to create their YouTube channel called Always Be Changing. Erin is an ESFJ Ox, type 2 on the Enneagram. She is parenting three children and two of them are her opposites. Her son Colt is an ENTP Eagle, who tested as gifted, but doesn’t respond well to discipline and a typical school environment. Her daughter Brooklyn is an ISTP, the same type as my daughter, but a type 5 on the Enneagram, which will be the next episode now that we have wrapped up the heart center with types 2,3 and 4. Since Erin is a type 2 parenting a type 5, I thought it would be a great segway. I met Erin because her pediatrician recommended, she come see me before she pursued other psychological testing for her son Colt. I want to be the first and hopefully the last place families can get answers when they are wondering if their child’s behavior is normal. I talk with Erin about
1. Her decision to pull her kids out of school and travel the world
2. The secret cure for her son’s emotional impulsiveness and oppositional defiance
3. Why it isn’t okay for her to hug her type 5 daughter
4. And how she has learned to set boundaries and separate facts from her very strong feelings.
You can follow Erin and Phil Lockwood at FollowABC.com or Live the Philippines.
