This is my absolute favorite podcast episode yet. I have a very impactful, intentional coversation about losing our son Trucker and a father's perspective on grief with my handsome husband Joshua Dukes. We covered a whole range of topics including child loss, cultivating resiliency, and how the hard was different as a father watching our family navigate pediatric cancer while still working and holding down the household at home. We also touched on first responder trauma and how all of it is compounding and heavy. Then Joshua shares practical tools and encourages other men who might be walking in grief now. Trust me you won't want to miss this, and our hope is that it will help a lot of people.
Takeaways
A fathers perspective and how the weight sits different on men than women. Trauma can be compounding and difficult to navigate in a culture that is ok with medicating. There are tools that are helpful while grieving and tools that are not helpful. Joshua shares both. Joshua encourages men to get involved with community and other men who have been through something similar, as we can not do it alone and were not meant to.You can find Joshua on instagram @thejoshuadukes and follow along on his podcasting & cultivating wild journey as well @cultivatewildwithdukes. n this conversation, Patti DiMiceli also shares her experiences with narcissistic relationships and the grief that comes with them. Patti also talks about her journey of healing and finding purpose through her work with grief and angels.
Takeaways
The importance of documenting and sharing our stories to connect with others The challenges of finding alternative treatments for pediatric cancer The impact of grief on a person's life and the need for support and understanding The need for greater awareness and education about pediatric cancer Narcissists lack empathy and the capacity for intimacy, and how they manipulate and control others for their own gain. Gray rocking is a behavior where you cut off a narcissist's supply by giving no reaction, similar to a gray rock that doesn't react to a cat's taunting. Grief from narcissistic relationships can be profound and devastating, as it involves psychological and emotional manipulation that makes you doubt your own sanity. Finding purpose and healing in grief often requires going through the hard stuff and choosing to grow from it.Born in the Queen of Angels Hospital in Los Angeles, CA, Patti knew she was chosen, though she didnât know why. And then she discovered a small lump behind her daughter, Amberâs, ear in August of 1979. It was a discovery that would change her life, her destiny, and the world.
Patti's story, chronicled in her book, "Embrace the Angel," challenges the notion of death and invites us to use the power of âCrossing the Thresholdâ to transform this world for the better. She is a Life Coach, an End-of-Life Doula, a Certified Grief Educator, as well as an entrepreneur. Calling herself a "Student of Life" and a "Pebble Thrower in the still pond of Life," Patti has given tiny pewter Guardian Angel coins (Pebbles) to thousands of people as she travels the world.
Using her God-given tools and talents to serve Humanity, she created Tobias & Co. LLC, a company which creates products from the photos she's taken around the world. Their Giving Back Division, "Embrace the Angel," is devoted to elevating others. They donate silk scarves, ties, and pillow covers filled with Angels and inspirational quotes to those who need it mostâthose who are dying and the Loved Ones they leave behindâso that they can FEEL comforted and loved.

Nutrition plays a crucial role in supporting the body during grief and illness. Eating real, nutrient-dense food can positively impact overall health and emotional well-being. Learning to read labels, sourcing high-quality meat, and avoiding processed sugars are essential for a healthy diet. Choosing organic and connecting with local growers through farmers markets can enhance the quality of food consumption.

In this conversation with my new friend Emily Gould, a fellow mother who has lost a child to cancer, we discussed Emily's experience with her daughter's cancer diagnosis, the brutal treatments they went through, and the challenges of navigating grief. We also talked about finding hope and choosing to assign meaning to tomorrow. Emily shared with us how her daughter's love and light continue to surround her, and how she finds comfort in signs and symbols that remind her of her daughter's presence. We also discussed the pressure to move on from grief from society and the misconception that grief has an expiration date. We highlight the choice to integrate their children into their lives and continue to honor them. We talk about the depth of love and the perspective that grief brings, and the importance of being seen and acknowledged in their pain.
Cancer treatments can be brutal and painful, and they often have life-threatening side effects.
Grief is a complex journey that involves feeling a range of emotions, including sadness, anger, and hope.
Finding signs and symbols that remind us of our loved ones can bring comfort and a sense of connection.
Choosing to assign meaning and hope to tomorrow can help us navigate the challenges of grief and loss. Be open to signs and connections from deceased loved ones
Recognize and appreciate the signs as messages from loved ones
Grief does not have an expiration date
Grief brings a deeper perspective and appreciation for life
Emily Gould loves to discover as much as possible about people, cultures, emotions, and the world around her. Emily has been writing for over 20 years. Upon her daughterâs cancer diagnosis, writing became less of a hobby and more of a coping mechanism. The more Emily wrote, the more people listened. Her words have spanned across nations and touched the hearts of people all over the globe. She has taken the opportunity to educate those who havenât been afflicted with cancer about this disease in hopes of spreading awareness and love for those who fight for their lives every single day. Alongside her husband Kris, Emily is always up for any adventure that life has to offer. The couple, with their four children, enjoy camping, hiking, boating, laughing too loud, and just being together.
