Imagine this for a moment: itās Saturday afternoon. The week has been long, and youāve finally carved out some time for yourself. Youāre in your favorite cozy spot in the living roomāmaybe itās the couch that perfectly hugs you or that recliner thatās seen better days but feels just right. š
And then it happens.

š
As you peek out the window, you realize itās not a salesperson. Itās worse.
š
Standing there are two people with smiles too wide for comfort, clutching those unmistakable pamphlets. You mutter to yourself, āJehovahās Witnesses. Great.ā Your mind flashes to Sam from workāyou know, the one whoās always leaving those flyers around the breakroom. You canāt help but roll your eyes.
š
Now, youāre faced with a dilemma. Do you answer the door? Or do you pretend youāre not home and wait them out?
š
My guest today, Nathan, has a unique perspective on this situation. Heās a second-generation Jehovahās Witness who made the bold decision to leave the Kingdom Hall behindāa choice that came with enormous consequences. Why did he leave? What was it like to walk away from a faith that had been part of his family for generations?
Nathanās story is one of courage, heartbreak, and rediscovery. Thereās a reason heās chosen not to share his last name, and as youāll hear, his journey is as eye-opening as it is powerful.
š
So, are you ready to find out what itās really like to step away from a faith so deeply rooted in your identity? To hear the story of someone who chose to walk a different path despite the odds?

š Abortion. A word that carries weight, controversy, pain, and shame. Itās a topic often whispered about, avoided in conversation, or shrouded in judgment. But what happens when the shame isn't just about the choiceābut about who you are? This week, my guest, Tonya Bailey Jones, shares her powerful journey of self-discoveryāone that took decades to fully embrace. For much of her life, she struggled with her identity, unable to confidently say the words: I am Tonya Bailey Jones. But today, she not only says themāshe knows and loves who she is. From childhood, Tonya felt like an outsider, never truly accepted for who she was. As she moved through adulthood, she became a version of herself shaped by the validation of othersāplaying the role she thought she was supposed to. The distractions of military service, parenting, and everyday responsibilities allowed her to bury the unease deep inside. But when retirement brought stillness, its weight became undeniable. She could no longer outrun āthe feeling.ā The mask she had worn for so long began to crumble. Join us as Tonya opens up about the deep shame, the search for identity, and the moment she finally embraced her true self. Her story is one of resilience, self-acceptance, and the courage to face the person in the mirror. š Join me as I walk in Tonyaās shoes.

Loathing...The Duke vs. UNC rivalry is the sports equivalent of Loathing from Wickedāa relationship built on deep-seated animosity, unwavering contempt, and just a hint of begrudging respect. Much like Elphaba and Glindaās cutting yet strangely harmonious duet, the Tar Heels and Blue Devils are forever intertwined, each defining the other through decades of battles on the hardwood. Every season, the Cameron Crazies' sneers and the Dean Domeās roars echo the songās theatrical vitriolā"Every little trait, however small, makes my very flesh begin to crawl!"āa sentiment any UNC fan can relate to when spotting Dukeās blue and white on the court. My guest today is Andy Bagwell. Andy Bagwell, co-author of Duke Sucks: A Completely Even-Handed, Unbiased Investigation into the Most Evil Team on Planet Earth, captured this dynamic perfectly, dissecting Dukeās infamous flopping, smug superiority, and, of course, their uncanny ability to get every foul call.
But in true Other Peopleās Shoes fashion, what happens if we step back and examine this rivalry from another angle? The loathing, after all, is what makes it greatāwhat fuels the passion, the unforgettable moments, the pure ecstasy of victory and the gut-wrenching agony of defeat. Without Duke, there is no UNC dominance; without UNC, there is no Duke villainy. Just as Elphaba and Glindaās friction drives Wickedās story forward, this rivalry elevates college basketball itself. Itās a hatred that, deep down, every fan secretly loves. Because in the end, while loathing may be the foundation, the rivalry itself is pure magic. Join me as I step into Andy's shoes.

Which would you rather indulge in, lemons or tamales? I feel like it's a pretty easy choice, right? Life has a way of throwing challenges at us when we least expect it. Sometimes, it feels like all we have are lemonsāsour, bitter, and hard to swallow. But what if, instead of making lemonade, we made something heartier, something rich with culture, love, and perseveranceālike tamales? In this episode, I sit down with Leslie Alvarez, a woman whose life is a testament to resilience, hustle, and the power of staying true to oneself. From a young age, Leslie learned the value of hard work and determination. Whether it was selling homemade oatmeal cookies to buy a bike or making tamales to support her family, she embraced the philosophy: āWhere there is a will, there is always a way.ā This mantra has carried her through some of lifeās toughest moments. Leslieās journey is one of incredible highs and devastating lowsāfinancial struggles, relationship breakdowns, health crises, and career setbacks. She has faced them all, from early motherhood and divorce to job loss and a terrifying incident involving her son. Yet, through every storm, she chose to rise, using each hardship as fuel for growth and transformation. Leslie reminds us that while life may hand us lemons, we can turn them into something meaningful. Whether itās tamales, a new career, or a fresh perspective, there is always a way forward. Join me as I walk in Leslieās shoes.
Key Takeaways from This Episode:
The Power of Hustle: How a strong work ethic and creative problem-solving helped Leslie push through tough times.
Overcoming Adversity: Facing challenges head-on, from financial struggles to personal losses, and emerging stronger.
Authenticity as Strength: The importance of staying true to oneself in a world that often pressures us to wear masks.
Finding Hope in Hardship: Why struggles can be a catalyst for transformation rather than a reason to give up.

In this heartfelt episode of Other People's Shoes, I sit down with my good friend Mike Oppenheim from the podcast Coffin Talk. Mike has become a true friend in this podcasting space, and today he shares a deeply personal journey about anger, grief, and missing his son. He opens up about the invisible weight he carriesāhow, on the outside, you might not see the pain etched into his heart, but it's always there, shaping his days. Mike's story is a raw, emotional exploration of love, loss, and the resilience it takes to move forward. Through our conversation, we unpack the layers of his grief, understanding how it intertwines with hope and the belief in eventual reunion. As part of this episode, I wrote a poem titled Tomorrow, inspired by Mike's experience. It captures the enduring love of a father for his son, the ache of absence, and the unwavering hope for a reunion. Join me as I try on Mike's shoes.
Tomorrow
Tomorrow, I'll think of you just like today,
With echoes of laughter that never fade away.
Your name is carved deep within my chest,
A sacred place where my heart finds rest.Tomorrow, I'll stand by the door you once passed,
Holding onto memories I pray will last.
Not out of anger, not out of blame,
But love unshaken, still burning the same.Tomorrow, I'll sit in the room made for you,
Though you've never seen it, it's always felt true.
Walls whispering stories we never got through,
Pillow untouched, sheets still neat,
But in my dreams, I hear your feet.Tomorrow, I'll feel the ache in my chest,
Missing your voice, your smile, your jest.
Yet hope's gentle whisper calls out to say,
There will come our Reunion Day.Tomorrow, I'll trace the stars in the sky,
Imagining you're under the same, close by.
Though miles may stretch and time may roam,
Youāve never left the heart you call home.Tomorrow, I'll believe in the thread unseen,
Tied between hearts, strong and keen.
No distance can break, no silence can sway,
The love that grows stronger every day.Tomorrow, I'll wait with arms open wide,
No shadow of anger, just warmth inside.
For deep down I know, come what may,
Weāll find each other on that bright Reunion Day.Tomorrow, and every day until then,
I'll carry you softly, again and again.
Not with sorrow, not with dismayā
But with the hope of our tomorrow, lighting the way.Tomorrow, and always, know this is true,
No words could measure how much I love you.Takeaways from This Episode:
Grief can be hidden beneath the surface; you never know the pain someone carries.
The power of friendship and authentic conversations in healing.
How hope can coexist with grief, offering a light in the darkest moments.
Connect with Mike Oppenheim:

Buffalos have a unique instinct when facing stormsāthey donāt run away like other animals; instead, they charge directly into the storm. By doing this, they minimize their time in harsh conditions and emerge stronger on the other side. In life, we are constantly faced with challenges, and just like the buffalo, we have a choice: we can run from adversity and prolong our struggles, or we can face difficulties head-on, knowing that growth lies beyond the storm. Jill Ogle, a guest on Other People's Shoes, shares this powerful message of transformation, encouraging others to embrace lifeās storms rather than run from them. Like the buffalo running into the storm, you have the power to transform your current reality into one of harmony and success. We believe in the power of synchronicity and know that you have found us for a reason. When the student is ready, the teacher appears, and your time for transformation is now. Step into the storm with courage, embrace all that you are, and watch as you emerge stronger than ever. Join me I try on Jill's sandals.

Welcome to Season 19 of Other People's Shoes titled "X-Ray."
š
This season, Iām diving into the theme of X-Ray "sight beyond sight," exploring the unseen damage and resilience in our lives. Itās about uncovering what lies beneath the surface, understanding our struggles, and discovering the beauty in how God works through even the most challenging moments. As I embark on this journey, let these words resonate with you: "While I'm waiting, I will serve You. While I'm waiting, I will worship. While I'm waiting, I will not faint. I'll be running the race even while I wait." Today, Iām honored to welcome my guest, Kim Patton, author of the book Nothing Wasted: Struggling Well Through Difficult Seasons. Difficult seasons catch us off guard and make us feel like life wonāt ever make sense again. On my worst days, itās hard to believe that God will guide me through the mess. Even on my good days, when I feel I have done all the right things, I sometimes wonder: Why am I working this job? Am I making a difference? How do I know the way to go? Why canāt I seem to be content? In Nothing Wasted, Kim Patton takes us on a journey of hope and faith. She shows how we mature over time, how like fog dissipating, we begin to see how God gently leads us through each season of our lives. We may be struggling, but we are moving forward. My faith is not unseen. My moments are not wasted. All the pain that comes in these seasons does lead to a full, rich life, growing in relationship with God and with others. Kimās story and insights are a powerful reminder that even when life is falling apart, God is still at work, weaving a story of redemption and purpose. Do you embrace difficult seasons and trust that nothing is wasted in Godās hands? Join me as I walk in Kim's shoes.

Whatās the greatest Christmas gift youāve ever received? For many, it might have been a pony or a horseāa dream for countless children. For our guest Kim Tschirret, founder of Hope Reins in Raleigh, horses were more than a gift; they were a lifeline. Growing up in a home marked by her fatherās alcoholism and a lack of unconditional love, Kim found solace and safety in her horse. While her father prioritized performance and horse shows, Kim longed for a deeper bondāa relationship that planted the seeds for Hope Reins. Today, Hope Reins is a ministry that "Inspires True Hope and Real Healing," offering a place where children and families can encounter Jesus, who meets them in their brokenness and brings restoration. For Kim, the journey of founding Hope Reins has brought her personal healing and a profound experience of Godās love. This growing community of grace is making a tangible impact across the Triangle and beyond, providing a space where love, healing, and transformation come to life. Saddle up! What is your favorite Christmas Movie? One of my favorites has to be "It's A Wonderful Life". In *It's a Wonderful Life*, George Bailey discovers his worth and the profound impact of his life on others. Guided by an angel, he sees a world without his influence, realizing how deeply his choices matter. Similarly, *Homecoming*, the 18th season of *Other Peopleās Shoes*, explores returning to places of safety and belonging, reminding us of the unseen value of our lives and connections. This idea resonates with John Graham and the Good Samaritan Home, a non-profit that has been offering ex-offenders housing and support since 2001. From one remodeled house to 17 homes in Dayton, Ohio, theyāve helped over 1,000 people rebuild their lives through faith and kindness. Just as George learns that brokenness can lead to redemption, the Good Samaritan Home shows that broken lives, like broken houses, can be restored. Join me as I walk in John Grahamās boots.

Who do you need a hug from today? Take a moment and read that sentence again: *Who do you need a hug from today?* Now, think carefullyāwho was the first person that came to mind? Say their name out loud. Chances are, itās someone you hold close to your heart, someone who means the world to you. Itās probably not someone you hold resentment or disdain toward, is it? Hugs, after all, symbolize connection, care, and a shared moment of vulnerability. My guest today is Jennifer Sakata, someone who understands the deep power of grace in everyday life. Jennifer invites you and me to step into a place she calls "the corner of real grace for real life." Itās a neighborhood where forgiveness, belonging, empowerment, and faith arenāt just conceptsātheyāre alive and thriving. Join me as we lace up Jenniferās shoes and walk alongside her story. Letās explore how grace can reshape our lives, relationships, and even the way we think about who we need a hug from today.

Instead, she developed a systematic approach to reclaim her mindset, overcome adversity, and design the fulfilling life she had always envisioned. This book is more than a guide; itās a personal tour through the exercises and insights that transformed her attitude and opened the door to lasting happiness. Have you ever allowed yourself to dream? Picture this: a genie appears, offering you three wishes. But there are conditionsāno asking for love, no bringing back the dead, and no wishing for more wishes. It makes you wonder. What three things would you choose if you had three chances to get something special into your life? Now and then, life gives us moments that feel like a wish fulfilledāan experience so surreal, itās like magic. For me, that moment came on November 11, 2023, at the North Carolina vs. Duke football game. The night was alive with 50,500 fans packed into Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill. The stands were a sea of Carolina blue, buzzing with excitement as the Tar Heels and Blue Devils went head-to-head in one of the fiercest rivalries in college sports. The game had all the intensity of a dream: heart-stopping plays, tense moments, and nail-biting suspense. And just when it seemed like the Tar Heels' hopes might fade, Noah Burnette, todayās guest, stepped up as time expired, lining up for a 42-yard field goal. The ball sailed just inside the right upright, tying the game at 36 and sending it into overtime. The stadium exploded. As the clock ticked down and North Carolina clinched the win, 47-45, it felt like I was living a storybook endingāone Iāll never forget. The whole weekend was more than a game; it was a trip of a lifetime, an experience that will always be one of my "three wishes come true." Today, I get to relive it all through Noahās eyes. So join me as I walk in Noah's shoes, sharing this unforgettable moment that left an indelible mark on my heart.
