  • If you have a graduating senior, or you've had one in the past few years, or you're watching one of your younger kids and already feeling the anticipation of this moment coming, this episode is for you. No matter where you are on the parenting journey, there is something here for you today.

In today's episode I'm coming to you from a very personal place. In two days, my own senior graduates, and I've been living right in the middle of everything I want to talk about with you today. I'm sharing honestly about what this transition has been like, what I've been feeling, and the tools and perspective that have been helping me move through it. My hope is that you walk away from this one feeling a little less alone and a little more grounded as you navigate this season.

    In this episode I cover:

Why every emotion you're feeling right now is valid, including the messy, inconvenient, and unexpected onesHow grief pulls us out of the present and what to do instead so you don't miss what's still right in front of youWhat letting go actually means and why trusting your child is one of the most loving things you can doWhy this is a rite of passage for you as a parent, not just for your teen, and a simple ritual to mark the moment and set intentions for your next chapterA message for the parents whose teen's path looks different right now, whether that's a delayed graduation, a different route altogether, or an uncertain next step

    Quotes from this episode:

"Reminiscing is not the same as dwelling. It is honoring."

"We're not releasing our kids into a void. We're releasing them into their own lives, into their own becoming."

"Progress is not always linear, and neither is becoming who we are each meant to be."

"Everyone is at their own spot and they are right on time for their own life."

  • If you've been watching your teen struggle with anxiety, low motivation, or a lack of direction and wondering what you can actually do to help, this episode is for you. I'm sharing the full framework I normally teach inside my workshops so you can access it right here, for free.

This is not about quick fixes or surface-level advice. It's about understanding what's really going on beneath the behavior and giving your teen the tools they need to build genuine, lasting confidence.

What I cover in this episode:

Why confidence, motivation, and emotional regulation are skills that can be learned, not fixed personality traits your teen is stuck with

What's really driving the behaviors you're seeing at home and why addressing the root cause changes everything

The four-step coaching framework I use with every teen and young adult client in my programs

    The Four-Step Framework:

Step 1: Dreams, Purpose, and Passion When teens connect with a personal vision and what genuinely lights them up, they shift from feeling stuck to feeling excited about what's possible.

Step 2: Thoughts, Mindset, and Focus Your teen's thoughts, mindset, and where they place their attention shape their entire experience. I walk through how to help them challenge unhelpful thinking and focus on what they can actually control.

Step 3: Feel, Process, and Express Most teens have big feelings and no idea what to do with them. This step is about building emotional fluency so your teen can name what they're feeling, move through it, and express it in healthy ways.

Step 4: Regulate, Reset, and Rise Up When teens don't know how to calm their nervous system, even small challenges can feel overwhelming. I cover the tools that help teens return to a centered state and build the resilience to keep going.

    Resources and Next Steps:

If this resonated and you're ready to get your teen real support, here's how to take action:

  • In today's episode, I have a special treat for you. Today I'm talking to Katie K. May, therapist, author, and founder of a therapy practice in the greater Philadelphia area that supports teens and families. Katie is also a board-certified self-harm specialist, and she wrote the book "You're On Fire, It's Fine: Effective Strategies for Parenting Teens with Self-Destructive Behaviors." This conversation was so good, and I know you're going to get so much out of it.

In this episode, we talk about:

What it means to be a "fire feeler" and why some teens experience emotions like an internal explosion that takes over everything, as well as why it's rooted in biology and not a character flaw

What's actually happening in a teen's nervous system when they shut down and go to their room, and why pushing harder as a parent tends to backfire

The transactional model of behavior and how the changes a parent makes on their own, even without their teen in therapy, can start shifting the patterns at home right away

Why judgment-based labels like "manipulative" or "oppositional" can inadvertently reinforce the very behaviors we want to change, and what to do instead

The difference between reactive punishment and natural consequences, and how to hold teens accountable in a way that actually teaches something

What self-harm is communicating about a teen's internal world, why it works physiologically to calm the nervous system down, and how parents can respond in a way that keeps the door open rather than driving the behavior underground

The "circle of support" concept and why it's so important for parents to look outward for their own support rather than leaning on their teen to be okay so that they can feel okay

What DBT gives teens that other approaches don't

I finished Katie's book the morning of this interview and I cannot recommend it enough. It is a quick read, it is practical, and it gave me so much language for things I've felt but couldn't always articulate in my own work with teens and parents. Whether your teen is in crisis or you just want to show up better in your relationship with them, this book is for you.

Go find Katie and her book, read it, and share it with every parent you know who is in the thick of it.

  • In this short but sweet episode, I’m sharing a simple (but often overlooked) parenting “hack” that has been making a big difference in my own relationship with my teens.

Like many of you, my days are full. By the time evening rolls around, it’s so tempting to check out on my phone, catch up on emails, or zone out. And my teens? They’re usually doing the same.

But I’ve realized that these everyday moments are actually some of the biggest opportunities for connection if we choose to use them intentionally.

So today, I’m inviting you into a small shift that doesn’t require more time or energy, just more presence.

What I Share in This Episode:

Why being in the same room isn’t the same as real connectionHow simple shared moments (like watching a movie together) can deepen your bondThe impact of screens on our ability to truly connectEasy, realistic ways to create connections in everyday lifeWhy presence matters more than doing things “perfectly”

  • Ever feel like your teen’s behavior makes no sense? What if I told you it’s not defiance, it’s brain development? In this episode, I'm breaking down what’s actually happening inside your teenager’s brain and how understanding it can completely change the way you parent.

    💡 What I Talk About:

Why your teen struggles with impulse control (developing prefrontal cortex) How brain “pruning” shapes your teen’s habits and behaviors Why your teen’s brain is highly changeable (neuroplasticity) How dopamine drives risk-taking, motivation, and screen habits The ESSENCE framework:

    🔥 Emotional Spark (big feelings)
    🔥 Social Engagement (peer focus)
🔥 Novelty Seeking (risk & exploration)
    🔥 Creative Exploration (questioning everything)

Your teen isn’t a problem to fix. They’re in a critical stage of brain development.

You’re not alone, and it may not be your teen that needs to change.

In this episode, I explore what might really be getting in the way of connection with my teenager, not their behavior, but how I’m showing up as a parent. I share five key patterns that can create disconnection and how small, intentional shifts can rebuild trust and closeness.

    💡 What I Talk About:

Why your teenager is not a problem to fix (shifting from control-based parenting to connection-based parenting) How parental burnout affects connection with your teen and leads to reactivity, stress, and disconnection The impact of generational parenting patterns and how inherited behaviors shape your parenting style Why taking accountability as a parent builds trust and strengthens your relationship with your teenager How to reconnect with the joy of parenting and create more meaningful, positive moments with your teen

  • Today, I’m opening up and sharing the heart behind my business, Guided Passages, and the journey that led me here. From leaving a stable teaching career to following a deeper calling, this has been a path of trust, courage, and listening to that quiet inner voice guiding me forward.

What I share in this episode:

The moment I realized teaching was no longer aligned with my purposeWhat I call “the roaring of the river” and how it led me to this workHow mentorship and rites of passage shaped my life (and why they matter so much for teens today)The journey of building Guided Passages from the ground upWhy modern teens are struggling and what they actually need more ofThe importance of connection, community, and being truly seenHow small, intentional spaces can create a life-changing transformation

These aren’t complicated or groundbreaking ideas, but they’re the things that often get overlooked in the busyness of everyday life or avoided because they can feel like a constant battle.

And just to be clear, this isn’t about perfection. I don’t know any teen (or adult) who has all of these dialed in perfectly. What we’re aiming for is high standards with high support, helping our teens move in the right direction one small step at a time.

  • Today, I'm sitting down with Sonia Suthar, a 19-year-old entrepreneur and the Founder of Cloud 9, who is helping parents understand why teenagers shut down when we're just trying to help, and what we can do instead to build strong, connected relationships with them. She also shares how we can help our teens build confidence from the inside out, so this conversation is one you won't want to miss!

In this episode, we explore what’s really happening beneath teen behavior and why well-meaning parental responses can sometimes create distance instead of connection. Sonia offers powerful insights into how teens interpret boundaries, advice, and even simple questions and how these moments can either strengthen or erode trust.

Whether you’re parenting a teen now or just want to understand them better, this conversation offers real, actionable insights that can help you strengthen connections, trust, and resilience in your family.

    We Talk About:

Why teens shut down and how to respond as a parentHow to improve parent-teen communicationThe difference between fixing vs. supporting your teenHow to build teen confidence and emotional resilienceWhat teens actually need when they open upThe “3 H’s” method: Heard, Helped, or HuggedHow to create a safe space for your teen to shareBalancing high expectations with emotional supportHow to stop power struggles and build connectionPractical tools to strengthen your relationship with your teen

  • Are you helping your teen athlete grow, or are you accidentally adding more pressure?

In this episode, I talk about how sports can be one of the most powerful developmental experiences in a young person’s life, and it's one way teens can learn perseverance, teamwork, leadership, and how to bounce back after mistakes.

But there’s something we don’t talk about enough... The role parents play in shaping that experience. What we say from the sidelines, in the car ride home, and during the hard moments can either build confidence or add stress.

Here are some of the powerful reminders for supporting teen athletes that we'll dive into:

Listen before problem-solving - Sometimes, they need to vent.Ask before giving advice. - “Do you want help with this, or do you just want me to listen?”Help them reset after mistakes. - Feel it → Flip it → Find the next play.Remember the bigger picture. - Sports aren’t just about the scoreboard; they’re about the kind of person your teen is becoming. It's a great opportunity for Connection.

These moments with our teens, on the sidelines, in the car rides, during practices, are powerful opportunities for connection and growth.

It’s in these ordinary moments that extraordinary bonds are formed.

  • In this episode, I break down what respect really looks like during adolescence, why it matters so deeply, and how we can lead our teens with both firmness and dignity.

When teens feel dismissed, talked down to, or controlled, their brains go into defense mode. But when they feel respected, they’re far more likely to stay open, honest, and cooperative even when the conversation is hard.

So often, we fall into the mindset that respect is something our teen has to earn. But the truth is, with teenagers, respect is often the fastest way to rebuild connection and increase influence.

    Here’s what we’ll explore:

Why respect is the foundation of connection and influence How subtle disrespect leads to resistance and shutdown Why teens are neurologically wired to care about dignity and status The “high expectations + high support” approach from researcher David Yeager Why collaboration beats control when setting boundaries What teens notice most about respect at school and at home How modeling respect is the quickest way to receive it back Why repair after conflict builds trust faster than perfection One of the most respectful parenting shifts: not rushing in to fix, correct, or advise

  • I’m sharing a simple but powerful shift that can completely change your relationship with your teenager: learning what’s actually in your control and what isn’t.

When your teen is shutting down, acting out, bringing attitude home, or struggling with motivation, it’s so easy to fall into the trap of trying to control their behavior in the heat of the moment. But the truth is, the more we try to control what we can’t, the more disconnected and overwhelmed we feel.

In this conversation, I break down how focusing on your own response instead of your teen’s emotions is where your real influence and leadership live.

This episode is for parents navigating:

Teen attitude and disrespectEmotional meltdowns and big feelingsPower struggles and constant conflictMotivation and follow-through challengesSetting boundaries without yelling or nagging

We’ll discuss the Circle of Control (inspired by Stephen Covey), the power of co-regulation, and what it truly means to “Let Them” (from Mel Robbins) without letting everything slide.

If you’ve been feeling stuck, reactive, or exhausted, this episode will remind you that the most powerful thing you can do is return to what you can control: your own nervous system, your boundaries, and your next move.

  • Today I’m sharing some thoughts I’ve been sitting with as I look at what’s happening in the world, and in everyday life. I keep coming back to the same idea: we’re missing clear pathways into adulthood. This episode is about what initiation is, what changes when young people are actually guided through it, and why rites of passage is at the heart of what we do at Guided Passages.

    Key takeaways:

New freedoms come with new responsibilities: adulthood isn’t a free-for-all—it’s a role with impact, power, and accountabilityInitiated vs. uninitiated adulthood: what maturity looks like in real life (regulation, repair, boundaries, integrity, contribution)Why rites of passage matter: without healthy thresholds, people often create their own—sometimes in risky or destructive waysA simple framework: severance → threshold → incorporation (and why being witnessed matters)Why nature + mentorship are essential teachers: the land as mirror, truth-teller, and reconnecting force—and mentors who “light the path”
