Welcome back! I'm so excited to share this episode with you! I got to interview Liza Dailey, an amazing woman whom I have always admired from afar. I finally decided to ask her about her parenting secrets. Enjoy every nugget of gold she dispenses. I truly enjoyed learning from her. Her introduction below was written by her daughter and my friend, Laura Dailey.
Here it is!
Liza Dailey is passionate about many things: piano teaching, learning about history, leading youth choirs, classical music, reading, finding reasons to celebrate and celebrating with gusto (often involving delicious food and large helpings of dessert!). But above all these passions and interests, I have never known a more dedicated mother. Reflecting on moments with my mom, I picture walking up the hill as a little girl to find the first buttercups in the spring, or eating banana bars at the end of the school day while I tell her about a science project. I remember late nights where I learned from her how to edit an English paper (a gift that keeps giving!) and early morning smoothies she lovingly made at 6:00am (!!). She was present in my life in so many moments I couldn’t possibly name them all even if I tried.
Liza is mother of 5 and grandmother of 12. After marrying her sweetheart, a farmer, she settled in rural Washington and has lived there ever since. She loves the beautiful view of the rolling hills, especially when the wheat turns from green to gold. Liza currently teaches piano lessons, serves in her church as the leader of the women’s group (Relief Society), and helps her husband, Kirby, as they put the finishing touches on their dream home. Liza also keeps busy with frequent trips and visits home to the farm from children and grandchildren. -

Bonnie Partridge is the mom of 6 children and grandmother to 24 grandchildren. She is lucky to live within 30 minutes of all 6 children so she can see them often. She and her husband Bill both graduated from Skyline High School in Salt Lake City and the University of Utah (go Utes!). They married in 1972. They've lived in various places including Nebraska, Idaho, Illinois and California. She and her husband served an LDS mission in the Dominican Republic and she now serves as Stake Relief Society President. Bonnie is one of the most positive and upbeat people I know. She enjoys bike riding, softball and other sports, and music. She is always thinking of others and is quick to serve, especially to her family. I'm lucky to have her as a friend and neighbor.

How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character by Paul Tough is a book for educators, parents and anyone else who works with children. It's a hopeful book for children who grow up in poverty or any other less-than-ideal situation. It teaches that regular old good parenting can change childrens' brain chemistry for the better and that character traits can be learned and improved. It suggests that success is determined more by grit, curiosity, and character than by IQ and how "smart" you are. Enjoy this synopsis and let us know what you think!

Lori Montague is my neighbor and the first person I met when we moved to Utah. She came right on over and introduced herself and her son and immediately offered us help with anything we might need. She even watched my children that first day we moved in, so I could open a few boxes and get organized enough to survive with 3 littles in a brand new house and place. (I don’t just let anyone watch my children either- I’m pretty paranoid about it actually!) Since that first day, she has done a gajillion things for me and my little family. My kids love running notes and drawings that they have made for Lori to her mail box at all hours. The way she treats my children is exactly how I wish every one (myself included) would treat them all the time. She listens, is respectful and makes every person that comes through her door feel like he or she is the most important person in the world. Her kids are pretty awesome too. 🙂

Welcome to the book review of The Danish Way of Parenting: What the Happiest People in the World Know About Raising Confident, Capable Kids! This book was written by Iben Dissing Sandahl and Jessica Joelle Alexander. These authors share what they have learned from years of research and experience about what the happiest people on earth do to make such a society exist. Jessica Joelle Alexander was married to a Dane and she noticed that he parented significantly differently than she did as an American. She had to dig deep to recognize how Danish people parented so differently and how their parenting style created the results most of us would want for our kids!

Kelly Lundberg is a mother of 5 children. After having ovarian cancer, she and her husband adopted five children (not all at the same time). I have always admired her for what she has taught me in the various church lessons I was lucky enough to have with her. She knows how to take a lesson or a principle and boil it down to what's the most important piece of it. She also knows how to convey that message in a way that is engaging and helpful to everyone involved. She is one of the most genuine people I've even known!

The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed by Jessica Lahey is a good read. She includes a lot of anecdotes from her own and others' lives. She goes into topics that I am very passionate about: nixing extrinsic rewards, learning from failure, and encouraging a growth-mindset. She gives very practical tips on how we can learn to let our kids fail and how to support them in those failures and encourage them to persevere and be "gritty."

Terra Lyn Brown
I was raised by Gloria Brown and had the perfect childhood. I knew that my mom was something special and that I was very lucky. I wanted the same for my children and so I searched until I found that person and then worked hard to make her my wife.
I have been an educator and school principal for 27 years and have worked with thousands of parents. I know I am biased but I can confidently say that in my 52 years of this earth I have not met, worked with, heard reports of or read about a better mom than Terra Brown. From the moment I met Terra I could see something in her that I had never seen in anyone. She had a love for life and everyone who met her connected with her. She demonstrated the potential to be or do anything she put her mind to. She chose to do what she feels takes priority over everything. She chose to be a MOTHER and she puts the same rigor, time and energy into being a mother as she would being a brain surgeon.
What comes first to mind that describes Terra as a mother is that she tucks into bed every child, every night without fail. She has a personal conversation with each of them and lets them know that she is there for them 100%. I often hear voices in the house after midnight. Those voices are always Terra and one of her children having a one-on-one conversation. She packs a loving lunch for each of her children day in and day out. Each morning gets her children off to school with a hug and kiss. She makes frequent trips into town to make sure her children have her support.
When Terra cooks or has a project she is working on, her children want to be right by her side. She never hesitates to include them and lifts them up onto the counter and gives them a meaningful assignment.
No matter what Terra is doing, when she hears her children call her name, she stops what she is doing and gets them what they need. She gets down on the floor and lets them know that she has stopped the world and is there for them and no one else.
Terra is the mother of a blended family. Each of her seven children never speak the words step-anything. They are all equal and loved and bound together by this amazing mother.
Health and fitness are important to Terra. She eats healthy and works out with her little boys by her side daily.
Terra serves as the Young Women’s President in her ward as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She will be sending the oldest of her young women on a mission to Argentina this month. When Terra became the Young Women’s President just over two years ago, this girl had nothing to do with the church and was headed in a different direction. Through Terra’s love and support and this young woman’s hard work she will be entering the mission field with a solid testimony and a life that will be focused on building others and centered on Jesus Christ. The transformation is nothing short of miraculous.
With the recent passing of Thomas S. the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Terra received the greatest compliment of her life. After watching the programs and tributes to President Monson, a close friend called and said, “After spending the day watching the life of President Monson, he reminds me of you.”
Terra is so talented. She has a natural talent for decorating. She can dance, she is athletic. She can still do a backflip. She puts in wood flooring, caters events, builds cabinets and roofed our house with her buddy Russ Cox. She loves to ride horses and bringing cattle off the range. She can fly fish and loves pheasant hunting with her father. She spent this last summer backpacking in Iceland.

Welcome to our first book review! I absolutely loved the book "The Opposite of Spoiled: Raising Kids Who Are Grounded, Generous, and Smart About Money" written by the New York Times personal finance columnist, Ron Lieber. This book gave me so many good tips and tricks and ideas of how to have conversations with my children about money, and how teaching about money also instills in our children so many values we want them to have. I go through a bit of each chapter Lieber writes and share several of his main points. Although, to not make this episode an hour long, I had to cut out a lot!
