  • In this episode, which is the 39th of David´s CALM leadership series he explains why influence is a key skill for leaders. He talks about what it is and why it is not about manipulating people. Before explaining how to become a far better influencer.

David covers how to tap into the logical part of somebody´s belief system, the rational mind, and move them emotionally. As well as how to use the fact most people naturally want to connect and collaborate to influence people and get more done.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Influence is the capacity to affect the character development or behaviour of someone or something, or to have an influence on the effect itself. You are always influencing someone. No matter what you do, where you are, your behaviour, and the words that you say, are influencing what goes on around you.It is people that get things done. Good leaders are good role models for those people. If you want to influence someone, plan, prepare and tailor your approach to them.Think about who you need to partner with to get things done.Work with the people who want to work with you, so you are not wasting energy trying to influence the wrong people. You can influence people on both a logical and emotional level. The innate desire humans have to make a connection and collaborate can also help you influence others. When selling, you are turning someone from a passive emotional state to actually wanting what you have to offer. You can still influence people who are not engaged with what you are trying to do.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Influence is a key skill to learn,’

‘Influence is a bit like atmosphere, we kind of exist inside of it.’

‘Influence enables you to empower people to inspire change.’

‘So, there's logic, there's emotion, and there's connection or collaboration.’

Nick explains how South Col does this and what entrepreneurs should look for in an investor partner.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

South Col is the last face of Mount Everest, a hard face that must be climbed to reach the summit.South Col acts as a kind of Sherpa to carry some of the stuff for entrepreneurs who are pushing their businesses to reach the peak of performance, so they can exit and sell for the best price.Once you have made a business decision, get it done and don’t look back.If a company is not communicating effectively, that issue can be fixed in just a few months.Nick only collaborates with entrepreneurs who have something that they care passionately about, a strong purpose.Be crystal clear on your niche, and your focus. Exhaust it before you move on to something else.Be honest with potential investor partners about what you need.If you need capital, don´t be shy about asking for it.If you need advice and support, make sure that regular contact is scheduled.Typically, it takes a year to get a business ready for sale.

    ‘I’m driven by data.’

  • In this episode of David Roberts´ CALM leadership series he talks about the importance of having a better relationship with yourself. David explains how to make sure that you don´t try to do everything yourself, set the wrong tone, not care enough to look after yourself and your team.

David shares 5 things you can do to get the balance right and build a great relationship with yourself, and, therefore, your team.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

As a leader it is easy to become very preoccupied with results, which can sometimes lead to your trying to do it all on your own.If your team sees you as someone who cares more about themselves than anyone, you will lose the backing of your team.If you don´t really care about yourself, you won´t be able to properly care for your team.During tough times, it is especially important that you invest in and take care of yourself.Check in on your reason, every 90 days.Put in place well being rituals e.g. going dancing twice a month to lift your spirits.Observe how you react to things, understand why, and make adjustments, as necessary.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘You can´t be loved, if you don´t love yourself.’

‘If you're doing that at your own expense, then you're going to lose yourself, and therefore, you're going to lose your team.’

‘The human brain works well in 90-day cycles.’

‘Your reactions are the symptoms, if you like, of your mental and emotional state.’

  • In this episode, which is the 36th in David´s CALM leadership series he talks about candour - radical candour and why as a leader it is essential. David starts by asking you to work out the consequences of not being completely honest at home, at work, with your colleagues, family, and friends.

He explains why ducking the issue because you are afraid to be candid, to be 100% honest, is rarely a good idea. Then, teaches you how to say what you mean and be honest without being nasty.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Understand what the consequences of your choosing not to say what you mean are.Your body language shows people you are being dishonest, and they won´t trust you.You only have to lie to someone once for them to not trust you moving forward. It is possible to be clear, without being nasty. You need to care personally and make it obvious that you feel that way. If you don´t know how to do that, don´t worry it is a skill anyone can learn.Praising someone you don´t like, does not feel like praise to them.Build rapport, before giving feedback.Ruinous empathy means you don´t say anything when you should, which can be even more damaging than obnoxious aggression.Giving empty praise, backhanded compliments and being two-faced about someone is manipulative insincerity.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘This is about being clear and not nasty.’

‘Obnoxious aggression is where you challenge somebody directly, but you don't care personally.’

‘Caring personally is a cultural thing.’

‘The returns can be huge, the time you save is massive.’

Understanding that difference is important. It's an unequivocal scientific fact that we become like the people we surround ourselves with.Do not just listen to the voices in your own head when buying a business, get the opinion of at least 3 other knowledgeable business owners.Recurring or re-occurring revenue is critical.Figure out what your role will be in any business you are considering buying.Learn the business well, before making any big changes. Those who have the gold make the rules, so choose your partners carefully.

Women Unlimited runs courses and uses mentors to help women and the organisations they work for to achieve true workplace parity.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

In a tight labour market, not developing women costs organisations heavily. To achieve true gender parity, everyone in the organization must work towards that goal and do so every day.To advance their careers women need to be more intentional about how they show up and what they do.Focus on sharing how what you are doing helps the organisation.Don´t be shy, advocate for yourself.Learn to speak with more confidence and make better connections with others.Ask for feedback.Recruiters need to be aware of their own bias and be open to interviewing a few people who do not 100% fit their vision of their ideal candidate.Diversity goes far deeper than building teams based on gender or skin colour. The strongest teams include people from a range of backgrounds, educational experiences, and upbringings.

  • This is the 34th episode of David Roberts´ CALM leadership series. For this one, he continues to look at how leaders can build strong, long-lasting relationships that provide benefits for both parties.

To do this he builds on the 4-step process he shared in his previous CALM episode. Using the example of a coaching relationship he provides practical advice any leader can use to build strong connections with others. Relationships that have context, are mutually beneficial, lead to action and good outcomes.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Building rapport takes time. Build on that rapport by using good body language. The connection part of the conversation should not take more than 20% of the time you spend with someone. If it is taking longer, you need to tweak your approach. For your relationship to have context you need to ask open questions that enable you to learn more about the other person and demonstrate to them that you are genuinely interested in them.Leave sufficient time at the end of your coaching session or conversation to share the very specific calls to action.

    BEST MOMENTS

    ‘You´ve got to have rapport.’

‘If the call to action of the conclusion isn't crystal clear, then the outcomes of that coaching relationship are not going to be as strong.’

‘The call to action is for the person that you're coaching.’

He is on a mission to help people to empower themselves to lead better personal and professional lives. Starting with getting them back in touch with who they are, so that they can live a truly fulfilling life.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Once we go back to the truth of who we are, we get empowered by the version that we've been denying. Most people are living in their minds. That is not where the truth is. Our minds distort things. When you are truly yourself, you stop wasting energy which frees you to live a far better life.Lack of self-worth and alignment leads to feelings of inadequacy and disappointment.See through your pain. Some people feel more comfortable when they are suffering so do nothing to change their situation. There is a world beyond our thinking. Travel really does open your eyes. The content of your character is what counts because that’s what lasts.Perspective comes from seeing through other people´s eyes.Express gratitude and stop complaining.Everyone needs a process, a ritual, for grounding.Just take one step at a time, when stepping away from your fear.Find the people that are your people.

  • In this episode, which is the 33rd of his CALM leadership series David continues to look at how leaders can build strong relationships that benefit both parties. Something that is essential for anyone who wants to be an effective leader.

David explains how to approach relationships with a clear understanding of what you are hoping to achieve, build rapport and long-term relationships. He shares the 4-step approach he uses which works for every scenario.

When it comes to relationships, good leaders lead. Never forget relationships are two-way it is not only about what they can do for you.Really listen. Ask questions and give time for answers.Set expectations from an early stage. A context for that relationship.Look for the win wins.

    BEST MOMENTS

    ‘Leaders lead in relationships.’

‘Really listen, be interested in the other person.’

‘Conclude with a call to action.’

‘Find a context for that relationship to flourish.’

  • Today, David is joined by Jeffrey Rissman who is the Senior Director of Industry at Energy Innovation, an independent climate policy think tank. Jeff´s work has been featured in Fast Company and New Scientist. He helps the industry to navigate its way to a net zero economy.

Jeff shares examples of how companies are transitioning to clean power and production methods. As well as explaining how the right policies and s are speeding up the process.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

The technology we need to transition to a clean economy exists and, in most cases, also makes economic sense.New legislation is speeding up the rate at which companies adopt clean production methods.Industrial heat pumps easily generate enough heat to carry out about a third of industrial processes e.g. cooking and packaging food.To be kind to the environment, it's important to find the most efficient and direct way to get the energy we need.A transition to a sustainable economy isn't a conservative or a liberal issue. No one benefits when pollutants are being belched into the air.Changing the way things are made has the potential to turn concrete into a product that helps to repair our climate. It makes economic sense for industrialising nations to leapfrog into green technology.Net zero sooner is better for people and the economy.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Industrial facilities should be looking at energy efficiency, material efficiency, and electrification of heat.’

‘It isn't a choice between sustainability and economic benefits, you can have both.’

‘It´s not a smart investment to invest in dirty technology... leapfrogging can avoid unnecessary investment.’

    ABOUT THE SHOW

People with purpose make a difference. Imagine a world where more people can just get their purpose out of them, into a plan and then actually make it happen. What a world that would be - People everywhere finding meaning and harnessing that to bring inspiration and energy to each and every day, changing lives for the better. But no one ever achieved anything on their own - we all have something unique to bring and that means we all have to play our part - if we want to go far, we have to go together and lead or serve towards a vision of the world we want to see. Everyone has a story to tell, and this show is where these stories come to life.
