JUNKYARD was first published in the May 1953 issue of Galaxy Magazine before becoming a part of the Golden Age of radio. The story was adapted for the airways and was originally broadcast on February 22, 1956 on the X-1 show broadcasting on NBC radio.
JUNKYARD tells the tale of a spaceship crew exploring a planet theyâve spied from afar, and what looks to them to be an inexplicable pile of junk on the planetâs surface. They land to investigate. One by one the crew begins to exhibit memory loss, and soon canât remember how to start the shipâs engines for take-off. The mystery becomes curiouser and curiouser, taking several unanticipated twists. Will the crew not only discover what is causing their memory loss, but be able to do so before they forget what they are attempting? One mystery leads to another in this cleverly imagined story.
As fans of science fiction, we chose JUNKYARD as our first show as it was one of the more intriguing science fiction scenarios we ran across during our initial Old Time Radio perusals. Plus, it gave two actors the chance to portray multiple interesting characters and research music as well as sound effects, which were something we hadnât done before. We think youâll enjoy this blast from the past as much as we did producing it and hopefully youâll want to listen again to two guys with time on their hands doing something they love.
