In this episode, Dr. Scott Goldman and I discuss the role of intelligence in elite sport performance.
Dr. Scott Goldman is a High Performance and Clinical psychologist. For over 25 years, he has served and continues to serve NBA, NFL, MLB, and NCAA organizations. He delivers collaborative and strategic resources that are proactive across all aspects of the organization and contributes to the entire organization’s performance on and off the field. He provides clinical and performance psychology to the athletes. Additionally, he provides psychological and human system expertise to the Head Coach, General Manager, and Vice President as well as their staff within a variety of responsibilities including talent acquisition, talent management, and education, as well as providing insights so they can process and generate solutions when managing talent and organizational demands.
Dr. Goldman has worked with some of the best athletes, coaches, and teams in the world including World Champions, Gold medal winners, world record holders, MVPs from every major sport, Final Four Teams including a #1 ranked NCAA men’s basketball team, NCAA Champions, BCS Bowl Winners, and Conference Champions in the B10 and Pac-12. Additionally, the NCAA enlisted Dr. Goldman for many projects, including co-authoring the NCAA’s Best Practices and Guidelines for Understanding And Supporting Student-Athlete Mental Wellness, and authoring a chapter in the NCAA sponsored Mind, Body, & Sport: Understanding and Supporting Student-Athlete Mental Wellness. Additionally, the NCAA selected Dr. Goldman to serve on their Mental Health Task Force. Dr. Goldman co-authored the first National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) consensus statement regarding the treatment of Student-Athletes. Dr. Goldman has been honored with fellow status by the American Psychology Association (APA) and the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP).
Dr. Goldman earned his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Tulane University, and his Master’s degree and Ph.D. in Clinical and School Psychology from Hofstra University. He received post-doctoral training at The Ellis Institute, under the tutelage of Albert Ellis, the creator of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). While at The Ellis Institute, he received advanced training and certification in child and adolescent therapy, drug addiction treatment, and attained Supervisory Certification to train other professionals in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy.

Brian Levenson is the founder of Strong Skills, which provides executive coaching and mental performance coaching, speaking, and consulting to elite organizations, performers, and leaders. Michael Inzlicht is a Research Excellence Faculty Scholar at the University of Toronto. His primary appointment is as Professor in the Department of Psychology, but he is also cross-appointed as Professor in the Department of Marketing at the Rotman School of Management. Michael conducts research that sits at the boundaries of social psychology, cognitive science, and neuroscience. Although he has published papers on numerous topics, his current research interests concern work and play. His research on work or effort is mostly on the topics of self-control and motivation, but also includes research on the mentally demanding nature of empathy and compassion. His work on play or leisure is a relatively new direction for Michael and includes research on social media, puzzles (e.g., crosswords, Sudoku), and recreational drug use.
Michael completed his B.Sc. in Anatomical Sciences at McGill University in 1994, his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology at Brown University in 2001, and his postdoctoral fellowship in Applied Psychology at New York University in 2004. He has published more than 150 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and edited two books. His work has been featured in media outlets around the world, including The New York Times, The Globe and Mail, BBC News, TIME, The Daily Telegraph, and the CBC, among many others. His research and teaching have been recognized with the Wegner Theoretical Innovation Prize, the SPSSI Louise Kidder Early Career Award, the Ontario government's Early Researcher Award, the ISCON Best Social Cognition Paper Award, the Principal's Research Award (University of Toronto Scarborough), and the UofT Scarborough Professor of the Year Award.

Marc Manella is the President of Mannella Consulting Services, specializing in leadership coaching, and optimizing learning environments in schools, non-profits, and sport. Prior to his work consulting, Mannella had a 20-year career in education; first as a science teacher, then as founder and Principal of KIPP Philadelphia Charter School, a college preparatory middle school in North Philadelphia. After five years at KIPP as principal, he led KIPP Philadelphia’s expansion to a five-school network serving nearly 2000 students in grades K-12, overseeing all aspects of school and network operations as KIPP Philadelphia Public Schools’ CEO. Steve Magness is a world-renowned expert on performance. He is the author of the new book Do Hard Things: Why We Get Resilience Wrong and The Surprising Science of Real Toughness. He is the coauthor of Peak Performance. The Passion Paradox, and the author of The Science of Running. Collectively his books have sold more than half a million copies in print, ebook, and audio formats.
Magness has served as an executive coach to individuals in a variety of sectors. His work serves on applying the principles of which he writes. In addition he's served as consultant on mental skills development for professional sports teams.
His writing has appeared in Outside, Runner’s World, Forbes, Sports Illustrated, Men's Health, and a variety of other outlets. In addition, Steve's expertise on elite sport and performance has been featured in The New Yorker, Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Guardian, Business Insider, and ESPN The Magazine.
Steve received his undergraduate degree from the University of Houston and a graduate degree from George Mason University. He currently lives in Houston, Tx with his wife Hillary. Once upon a time, he ran a mile in 4:01 in high school, at the time the 6th fastest high school mile in US history.
