Welcome to the 45th episode of my drug pronunciation series! As we continue through the alphabet from A-Z, we’re on the letter “E” for empagliflozin. Also check out episode 228 for ezetimibe and episode 134 for eszopiclone.
In this episode, I break down empagliflozin and Jardiance into syllables, tell you which syllables to emphasize, and share my sources.
The written pronunciations are helpful. They are below 👇🏻 and in the show notes for episode 309 on https://www.thepharmacistsvoice.com/. Pro Tip! Practice saying both drug names while you look at the written pronunciations. Looking at the written pronunciation with the syllables divided correctly helps. Practice leads to mastery.

Today’s episode is an interview with Nesha Pai, Dr. Asha Pai Bohannon’s sister. Nesha is an entrepreneur and CPA from Charlotte, North Carolina.
During our interview, we walk down memory lane and talk about Asha first. Then, Nesha discusses the Dr. Asha Pai Scholarship for Excellence in Pharmacy. Nesha established the scholarship in conjunction with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s PharmD Program. Creating the scholarship gave Nesha a way to heal and use the tragedy of Asha’s unexpected death for good. To donate, visit go.unc.edu/asha.

Welcome to the 43rd episode in my drug pronunciation series. In this episode, I break down cetirizine and Zyrtec into syllables, tell you which syllables to emphasize, and share my sources. The written pronunciations are helpful. Find them below👇🏻 and in the show notes for episode 304 on thepharmacistsvoice.com. Practice leads to mastery. Practice saying these 2 drug names.
Host Background: Kim Newlove has been an Ohio pharmacist since 2001 (BS Pharm, Chem Minor). Her experience includes hospital, retail, compounding, and behavioral health. She is also an author, voice actor, and podcast host (2 shows).
Cetirizine = se TIR i zeen
Emphasize TIR Sources: USP Dictionary OnlineZyrtec = ZUR-tek
No syllable is emphasized in the literature, but I stress the first syllable, ZUR Source: Zyrtec’s YouTube channel (Direct-to-Consumer videos from the drug sponsor) Note: I was trained in pharmacy school to say “ZEER-tek,” not ZUR-tek. I only say ZUR-tek now because the drug sponsor intended it to be said that way. When I heard the drug sponsor’s pronunciation in ads, I was surprised to learn I had been mispronouncing it for 20+ years.Thank you for listening to episode 304 of The Pharmacist’s Voice ® Podcast.

Thank you God for unanswered prayers. Instead of the 30-year career in a traditional pharmacist role I aimed for, I got an interesting, non-traditional career that includes podcasting. Supportive friends and family, especially to my husband Nathan and my two sons. Dave Jackson for teaching me about podcasting and continuing to coach me (5 years and still going strong). To learn more about Dave, visit www.schoolofpodcasting.com. Don Baarns, my audio engineering mentor My audience. The Pharmacist’s Voice Podcast has tens of thousands of downloads in more than 60 countries (in the last 30 days). Thank you for listening! Guests. This podcast has about 50% interview shows or panel discussions. Our conversations inspire my audience. Thank you for being guests!Lessons learned
Vocal confidence Better microphone choices Better microphone positioning Comfort, confidence, and skill with in-person podcasting Experience hiring a podcast editor. (Thank you, Engin Hassan.) I closed the gap (reference to Episode 83 with Sean Pratt) I can laugh at myself. Vocally and audio engineering-wise, I have improved tremendously Production schedules are important. I am coachable, and I can confidently coach others about podcasting. I need a “guest sign-up form” on my website. Otter.ai is helpful for show notes. Being able to copy a link to an episode and paste it into an email saves me time. It takes years to earn a reputation as a podcaster. Focusing on single topics feels right to me. I enjoy writing. 300 episodes helped me learn what I like to do and what I don’t like to do. If I had to pick between VO (voiceover jobs) and podcasting, I’d pick podcasting. I got my 300th follower on YouTube this week. Life is short. What’s next?
The next hundred episodes…ETA Fall 2026 Newsletters for the podcast (LinkedIn and email) Coaching new pharmacist podcasters. I am offering a webinar on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at 8 PM Eastern for anyone interested in starting a podcast. In 2025, I will be pitching pharmacy organizations to hire me to run their podcasts at conferences. I don’t have to be on the mic. Our work includes reducing the stigma of suicide, promoting evidence-based prevention strategies, and raising awareness about suicide’s relationship to mental illness and substance use disorders, and other factors that contribute to suicide. Our community-based programs and best-practice resources are specifically designed to improve mental health across the state. Thanks to a combination of education, training, and support, we’re helping all of Ohio’s communities reduce the risk of suicide and lessen its effects on family, friends, and neighbors.

The 2024 Pharmacist Authors Series concludes today with Part 3 of 3. The goal of the series is to inspire you to write a book.
Who is the third author in this series? It’s me (Kim Newlove, RPh/Podcast Host)! Today we’re talking about my eBook and audiobook. The title is Pharmacist Podcaster: A Podcast-Planning Guide for Pharmacy Professionals. It’s a 59-page ebook with 12 worksheets. The audiobook is 92 minutes long at 1X speed, and the introduction is included in this episode. I’ll tell you what it’s about, where you can find it, advice for pharmacist authors, and more.
I also have three guests in this episode. The first two are my publishers: Dr. Janan Sarwar and Dr. Theary Chhim from Publishing in Doses. We share a 30-minute conversation. Then, my third guest is audio engineer Julie Walthers from Whole Story Studio. Our conversation is about 30 minutes as well. Julie helped me with the audiobook.

This is my Summer 2024 update. In this audio newsletter, I update you on my business, my podcast, my family, and what I’ve been listening to, reading, watching, and playing.
Business update
My eBook is done, and I narrated the audiobook version. I’m adding both to my online store this month. I will offer five other lead magnets this Fall. Plus, I’m starting an email newsletter.
The Pharmacist’s Voice Podcast (my business podcast)
Several of my Series will continue throughout the Fall. Episode 300 should drop in October. Subscribe for all future episodes.
The Perrysburg Podcast (my local podcast)
Episode 56 comes out August 16, 2024. It’s about coffee.
Family update
Kraig started his last year of high school. Derrick heads back to college this month. Nathan is looking forward to several fantasy football drafts. I’ve been knocking out projects, traveling, and spending time with family this summer. I also slept in a few times, went swimming, and ate ice cream.
What have I been listening to, reading, watching, and playing?
This is my favorite part. I talked about Sia, audiobooks, podcasts I, and what Kraig and I are reading. Although I watched some of the Olympics, I only talked about TV Series we have watched this summer. We didn’t play many board games this summer.
