  • Here we go again! The word on everyone’s lips right now around jobs and money is recession. Whether this is your first recession or you’ve been through this rodeo many times, now is a good time to start thinking about readying your money and reading all the “recession-proof your career” articles.

    We chat about:

    - not making all decisions from a place of fear

    - why this could be a great time to make bold career/life decisions

    - passive vs. proactive approaches to financial preparation

    - leaning into community and avoiding isolation

    - and more!

Reminder: We are not financial advisors so take our commentary with a grain of salt and consult an advisor before making any money moves!

  • Whether you call it a micro-retirement or a sabbatical or funemployment, the idea of taking a period of not working (or scaling back work) in the middle of your career isn’t something new. We’re all likely to be working longer, and living longer, so waiting until 65 to formally retire and enjoy your life doesn’t feel like a guarantee the way it did for our parents’ or grandparents’ generation. Renée has taken one and highly recommends a break for anyone who can fit it into their budget and lifestyle.

    This week, we discuss:

    - planning your micro-retirement or career break

    - if forced unemployment (like a layoff or firing) counts?

    - using the break to relieve burnout, pursue passion projects, or pivot careers

    - building a balanced life/career where you don’t need breaks

    - and so much more!

  • Like many people, we are huge fans of the hit Apple TV+ show Severance. It’s very bingeable and made us think about our own POVs on compartmentalizing our work and career from the rest of our lives. Is focusing entirely on productivity at the office and then never bringing work home a sign of good work-life balance, or are there downsides to mentally writing off huge chunks of your day?

This week, we’re doing something different with a TV episode to chat about some of the show’s themes—we promise no spoilers!— and discuss:

    - if we’d choose severance

    - whether “bringing your whole self” to work is ever a good idea

    - embracing the many roles we play in life vs. limiting ourselves to one identity

    - how similar our innies and outies would be

    - and much more! (#PraiseKier)

  • Whether you live in the public eye or a more private life, sometimes the things we do or even just the way we exist in the world ruffles some feathers. It can feel like the more we’re doing big things or growing in popularity or visibility, the more we attract unwanted (and unwarranted) hate – especially for women. But the tradeoff is silencing yourself and not leaning into your greatness…so we say, push through the criticism and do it anyway!

    This week, we get into:

    - the “crabs in a bucket” mentality

    - pushing through the fear of standing out

    - filtering the noise to find constructive criticism

  • Rise and shine! This week, we’re discussing morning routines and how to build a morning program that sets us up to have a good day so we can live our best lives. We both believe it’s important to carve out time for self-care to pour into yourself so you’re not rolling out of bed and immediately into a meeting or emails.

    We chat about:

    - comparing our mornings to the aesthetic routines on social media

    - routines vs. rituals to kickstart the day

    - some of our favorite ideal AM habits

    - finding and using your chronotype to build a morning schedule

  • Ina Garten – aka the Barefoot Contessa – is the author of “Be Ready When The Luck Happens: A Memoir” (along with 13 New York Times bestselling cookbooks), a beloved Food Network personality, Instagram sensation, and cultural icon. This was a slightly different book club pick for us, and we loved it! Ina’s memoir not only has an incredible, eye-catching title, but it’s full of life lessons and business advice about productivity, hard work, and love hidden in many charming anecdotes and stories.

For this book club chat, we dove into:

    - her unique career path and willingness to start something new (at any age)

    - having the right partner(s) to believe in and support you

    - the importance of trying many things to figure out what feels right

    - our favorite life and career lessons from Ina’s journey

  • Suzy Welch is a Professor of Management Practice at the NYU Stern School of Business, a business journalist, and best-selling author who coined the Velvet Coffin theory. This theory describes how waiting to change a job or life that’s comfortable – but not your big dream – puts you in a metaphorical “velvet coffin” with a lid that slowly closes and traps you. Yikes!

    Our conversation dives into:

    - the difference between comfort, contentment, and complacency

  • Many people (including us) proudly wear the label of overachiever and enjoy being the kind of people to go above and beyond – in work and in other parts of life. But that’s not always a good thing. Sometimes, it can actually create more problems than it solves.

This week, we unravel the downsides of being an overachiever, including:

    - the challenge of setting unrealistic (and unsustainable) expectations about your capacity

    - knowing where to put your extra energy and effort

    - the pros and cons of overperforming during your first 30/60/90 days on the job

    - the difference between being a high achiever and an overachiever

    - why it doesn’t have to be lonely at the top, if you build the right support network

    - many, many automobile metaphors

A healthy relationship with competition can actually create community when done right – plus, we think everyone deserves to know what it feels like to be a winner.

    We discuss:

    - whether we identify as “competitive” people

    - learning from negative emotions like jealousy

    - why it’s sometimes harder for women to be seen chasing wins

    - raising kids with a healthy relationship with competition

    - group project trauma

  • It might be a taboo topic for some, but this week we’re talking about money. Specifically, how money can hold us back or set us free when we’re trying to chase our dreams and the lives we want. We chat about how money can bring up feelings of shame or anxiety, how we can use it to motivate us, why it’s normal to go through seasons of ups and downs with your financial wellness, and why sometimes you can’t put a price on happiness or peace of mind.

Also, we are not financial professionals and we don’t give any money advice. So please fact check any recommendations we may share. Except to treat yourself! We stand ten toes down on that piece of advice.

So this week, we’re talking about reconnecting with our younger, playful selves, including:

    - what play means to us, and how it changes over time

    - the difference between venting and being a chronic complainer

    - the importance of being a beginner, getting outside, and laughter

  • We’re often taught in school to aspire to work in Corporate America if we want to achieve professional and financial success. But should we still put a corporate career on a pedestal in 2024 as the only (or most guaranteed path) to getting what we want out of our work lives? Do we all need to experience a corporate job at least once in our working lives?

Our hosts argue opposite sides of the coin – for and against needing a corporate girl era. In this episode, we get into the pros and cons of corporate jobs, why we should be encouraged to celebrate alternate paths to success, how to get the best benefits, and more!

  • The New York Times bestseller, “Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle,” is for women (or anyone) who has felt overwhelmed and exhausted by everything they have to do, yet still worried they weren’t doing enough. The book explains why women experience burnout differently than men—and provides a roadmap to minimizing stress, managing emotions, and living more joyfully.

For this book club episode, we dive into our own experiences with burnout and research from the book, including:

    - the definition of burnout

    - dealing with stress vs. dealing with stressors

    - prioritizing physical activity, a good cry, affection, and positive social interactions

    - the importance of finding meaning and “something larger” in life

    - why we should spend 42% of our day resting

    - knowing when to exploit your current situation or explore new options

    - navigating compassion fatigue

    - why healing sometimes hurts

    - & so much more!

As the Nagoski sisters remind us, “Wellness is not a state of being but a state of action.” We think this book has many good practices and actions to take to prevent and manage burnout.

  • “Keep your eye on the prize.” “Go after what you want.” We’ve all heard these maxims encouraging us to persevere, be resilient, and chase our dreams. But how do you know it’s time to give up the race and stop chasing? This week, we’re unpacking this tough question (and all the emotions that come with it).

    We’re diving into:

    - giving yourself permission to chase new dreams or change your mind

    - avoiding a life of regret

    - understanding triggers and flickers
