Lisbon's historical charm is embodied in its magnificent buildings and meandering cobblestone streets. Unlike many European cities, Lisbon was spared the ravages of World War II, yet it faced a colossal challenge in 1755—an earthquake of devastating proportions. The seismic event, accompanied by fires on All Saints' Day, reshaped the city's landscape and claimed tens of thousands of lives. Alfama is also the birthplace of Fado, Portugal's soul-stirring music, filled with tales of destiny, love, and everyday struggles. Don't miss the São João festival in June, a lively celebration of music, dance, and traditional customs that transforms Alfama into a vibrant spectacle.
- Belém: Maritime Heritage and Irresistible Pastries For a glimpse into Portugal's seafaring past, head to Belém. The Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery stand as enduring symbols of the nation's maritime legacy. Indulge your taste buds with a pastel de nata, a delectable custard tart with a rich history dating back to the 18th century. Pastéis de Belém, in particular, guards a closely held secret recipe, making their pastel de nata a sought-after delight.
- Chiado and Parque das Nações: Art, Literature, and Modern Marvels Art enthusiasts and literary minds will find solace in the Chiado district, with its boutiques, historic cafes, and the captivating Chiado Museum. For a taste of modern Lisbon, venture to Parque das Nações, a district transformed for the 1998 World Expo. The Oriente Station and Lisbon Oceanarium showcase contemporary architecture, providing a striking contrast to the city's historical charm.
- Culinary Delights and Vinho Verde: A Feast for the Senses Lisbon is a paradise for food lovers, offering fresh seafood, flavorful spices, and irresistible pastries. Dive into the bustling Mercado da Ribeira or savor traditional bacalhau dishes in a cozy neighborhood eatery. Wash it all down with Vinho Verde, a distinctive Portuguese wine known for its refreshing character, making it a perfect companion for various dishes.

Welcome to today's episode of Places People Purpose. In our last episode, we ventured to the breathtaking seaside town of Tarifa. Today, our journey takes us to the north of Spain, where we explore the remarkable city of Santiago de Compostela. This city holds a unique place in the hearts of millions worldwide due to its historical, cultural, and spiritual significance, notably as the final destination of the Camino de Santiago, one of the world's most famous pilgrimage routes.
🌍 Episode Highlights:
- Galicia's Diverse Heritage Santiago de Compostela is nestled in the northwestern region of Spain, known as Galicia. Like many other parts of Spain, Galicia boasts a rich history of diverse settlements, dating back to Celtic tribes whose influences can still be seen in the region's culture and language, known as Galego. The Romans left their imprint on Galicia, as evident in well-preserved sites like Lugo's Roman walls. The region's history includes periods of Visigoth rule and intermittent Moorish incursions.
- The Birth of Galicia During the early Middle Ages, Galicia emerged as a Christian entity during the Christian Reconquista, as Christian forces sought to reclaim the Iberian Peninsula from Muslim rule. Today, Galicia enjoys the status of an autonomous community within Spain, recognizing its cultural and regional diversity while preserving national unity.
- Autonomy and Cultural Identity The establishment of Galicia as an autonomous community was a significant step in Spain's transition to democracy following Francisco Franco's death in 1975. The region's autonomy was ratified by a referendum in 1980, granting it its own government and legislature. This autonomy has allowed Galicia to protect and promote its cultural and linguistic identity, including the preservation of Galego as an official language and the celebration of its rich traditions.
- Galicia's Natural Beauty One aspect that captivated us during our visit to Galicia was its natural beauty. With lush hillsides, mountains, and a stunning coastline, it's reminiscent of the scenic landscapes we experienced growing up in Washington State. The region's geology, influenced by tectonic plate movements and glaciations, has given rise to diverse topographic features, making Galicia a haven for nature enthusiasts.
- Santiago de Compostela's Rich History Now, let's dive into the captivating history of Santiago de Compostela. The city's name, derived from "Sant'Iago," or Saint James in Galician, reflects its foundational myth tied to the apostle Saint James. According to Christian tradition, Saint James's disciples transported his remains to Galicia, where they were discovered in the early 9th century. King Alfonso II recognized the significance of this discovery and ordered the construction of a church, which eventually evolved into the grand Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
That concludes today's episode of Places People Purpose. We hope you've enjoyed our journey through Galicia's diverse heritage, stunning natural landscapes, and the enchanting history of Santiago de Compostela. Welcome to today's episode of "Places People Purpose". Today, our destination is Cordoba, but before we delve into its rich history and culture, let's explore the fascinating region of Andalusia. Understanding its history is essential to appreciating the unique architecture and heritage of this area, so get ready for an enlightening journey.
🌍 Episode Highlights:
- Andalusia's Historical Tapestry: Andalusia's history is a blend of cultures and civilizations, with the earliest inhabitants being the Iberians. Following Carthaginians, Phoenicians, Celts, and Greeks had an impact on the area. Roman rule led to prosperity by exporting olive oil and wine. After the Roman Empire, Andalusia faced invasions from barbarian tribes and the Visigoths. The Moors, North African Muslims, crossed the Strait of Gibraltar in 711 CE, bringing a flourishing period known as al-Andalus.
- The Legacy of the Moors: The Moors left an indelible mark on Andalusia during their eight-century rule. Their influence is still visible today in iconic monuments like the Mosque of Cordoba and the Alhambra Palace in Granada. The Reconquista, a gradual Christian advance, culminated in 1492 when the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, captured Granada and marked the end of Muslim rule in Andalusia.
- Exploring the Alhambra: The Alhambra, also known as "The Red Fortress," is a symbol of the opulence and cultural fusion of the Nasrid Dynasty. Its history dates back to the mid-13th century and evolved under different rulers. After the Reconquista, Ferdinand and Isabella preserved the Alhambra as a Moorish architectural masterpiece. The complex includes the Generalife, Alcazaba, and Court of the Lions, representing Morocco's tribes.
- Andalusia Today: Andalusia, covering 17% of Spain, is the second most popular tourist destination in the country, attracting 30 million visitors annually. Its membership in the European Union has reduced rural poverty, improved healthcare, and boosted cultural growth. The region's main attractions are the Costa del Sol and Sierra Nevada.
- Unveiling Cordoba: Cordoba, founded by the Romans in the 2nd century BCE, was a Roman colony known for agriculture, mining, and olive oil production. Christianity emerged under Visigothic rule, but political instability arose. In 711 CE, Cordoba fell to Muslims, leading to cultural, scientific, and architectural advancements. The Mezquita, now the Great Mosque, showcases Islamic architecture. Despite the Reconquista, Cordoba continued to prosper under Christian rule.
- Cordoba's Resilience and Rich History Cordoba's history is a story of resilience, cultural exchange, and the enduring influence of its Roman, Islamic, and Christian past. Its UNESCO World Heritage Site, the historic center with the Mezquita at its heart, attracts visitors from all over the world. Cordoba is a city where history comes alive, and its influence on the world can be witnessed through its architecture and culture.

Welcome to today’s episode of "Places People Purpose." I'm absolutely thrilled to kick off this new series of episodes as we embark on an unforgettable journey through the heart of Spain and Portugal. We've got some incredible stories to share, so let's dive right in!
🌍 Episode Highlights:
- Malaga – A City Steeped in History Let's dive into the captivating history of Malaga, a gem on the southern coast of Spain. Founded by the Phoenicians in 770 BCE, it stands as one of the world's oldest cities. "Malaka," as it was known then, was a bustling Phoenician trading post on the Mediterranean coast. The city's history is a tapestry of different civilizations.
- Spotlight on the Phoenicians Our story takes a detour to delve into the Phoenicians, an ancient civilization with origins in the eastern Mediterranean. Renowned seafarers and traders, they established trade routes across the Mediterranean and left a lasting legacy, including the Phoenician alphabet. Their influence on the ancient world was undeniable.
- Shifts in Rulership Over the centuries, Malaga saw the rise and fall of various rulers – Greeks, Romans, and Moors. The Moors left a remarkable imprint on the city, with architectural marvels like the Alcazaba Fortress. Malaga thrived as a cultural and economic hub under their rule.
- The Spanish Inquisition The Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, marked the end of Moorish rule in 1487 CE. Malaga played a pivotal role in the Spanish Inquisition, a dark chapter in history that saw the persecution of non-Christians. It expanded its scope to include perceived heretics, using tribunals and torture to enforce conformity. This period led to the expulsion of Jews and Muslims from Spain in 1492 and 1502, respectively.
- Decline and Change By the 18th century, the Spanish Inquisition's influence waned, thanks to Enlightenment ideas and political changes. It wasn't until 1834 that it was formally abolished, ending nearly 350 years of religious terror.
- Post-Inquisition Malaga Malaga's history saw periods of prosperity and hardship, including the devastating Spanish Civil War. Under General Franco's rule, it lived in isolation and authoritarianism. The transition to democracy after Franco's death in 1975 heralded a new era of modernization, economic development, and political liberalization.
- Today's Malaga Fast forward to today, and Malaga stands as a testament to resilience. A cultural and tourist hotspot, it boasts a rich heritage, stunning coastline, and a thriving arts scene. The city celebrates famous citizens like Pablo Picasso and hosts numerous museums, including the Picasso Museum. Its sunny climate, beaches, and diverse cultural heritage make it a magnet for global visitors.

Welcome to today's episode of "Places People Purpose." We're taking you on a captivating journey through time and architecture as we unravel the history and significance of one of the world's most iconic landmarks. You guessed it, the Eiffel Tower! Sit back, relax, and prepare to be enchanted by the iron marvel that has come to symbolize not only Paris but all of France.
🌍 Episode Highlights:
- Origins and Design Our focus today is the Eiffel Tower, or "La Tour Eiffel." This architectural wonder was born as part of the 1889 Exposition Universelle, a celebration of the French Revolution's centennial. The winning design was crafted by Gustave Eiffel, a renowned civil engineer known for his metal framework expertise.
- A Tower of Iron Construction of the Eiffel Tower began in 1887 and was a testament to human ingenuity. Made of puddle iron, a refined form of the metal, it was a monumental endeavor involving 18,000 individual iron pieces and over 2.5 million rivets. Remarkably, it was completed in just over two years without any serious accidents.
- Design Inspiration The Eiffel Tower's design had its roots in the viaducts built by Gustave Eiffel's company. The tower's signature "A" shape, with four legs connected by a web of joists, has become iconic.
- An Iron Behemoth Weighing approximately 10,100 tons, the Eiffel Tower stands tall and proud. Its metal framework alone comprises 7,300 tons of iron, protected by a 60-ton coat of paint that must be renewed every seven years.
- A Name to Remember Originally called the "300-meter Tower," it was named after its visionary creator, Gustave Eiffel. The Tower opened to the public on May 15, 1889, showcasing French brilliance in industrial and technological achievements.
- Controversy and Love Not all welcomed the Eiffel Tower with open arms. Satirical comments in newspapers labeled it as a "tragic street lamp" and "belfry skeleton." However, its unique design soon won over visitors, with over 2 million people touring it in its first year.
- A "Temporary" Marvel Believe it or not, the Eiffel Tower was initially intended to stand for just 20 years. Yet, it became a hub for scientific research and early wireless telegraphy experiments, sparing it from demolition in the early 1900s.
- Towering Achievements The Eiffel Tower reigned as the world's tallest structure for 40 years, only to be surpassed by the Empire State Building in 1931. Despite challenges, it has remained open to visitors for most of its existence, attracting millions annually.
- The Views and Fine Dining With its three accessible floors, the Eiffel Tower offers breathtaking views of Paris. The Jules Verne restaurant, named after the famed French novelist, has become a culinary sensation under the guidance of triple Michelin-starred chef Frédéric Anton.
- A Legacy of Steel Did you know that Gustave Eiffel's company also crafted the metal framework for the Statue of Liberty? An extraordinary testament to a master builder's legacy.
- Illuminated Elegance The Eiffel Tower has donned various colors and patterns for special occasions and holidays, spreading messages of hope, awareness, and celebration.

🌍 Episode Highlights:
- The "Trente Glorieuses" Era: The post-war years ushered in a period of unprecedented economic growth and prosperity in France, known as the "Trente Glorieuses" or "thirty glorious years." Paris was at the forefront of this transformation, experiencing a construction boom with modern housing complexes sprouting up in the suburbs. The city's infrastructure expanded, boasting new highways, airports, and the expansion of the Paris Métro system.
- Political Stability with Charles de Gaulle: The post-war era was marked by relative political stability, thanks to the leadership of Charles de Gaulle. A war hero and leader of the Free French Forces during WWII, de Gaulle served as both Prime Minister and President of France during the 1950s and 1960s. His presence provided continuity and stability during this transformative period. In 1957, France joined West Germany in forming the European Economic Community, a precursor to the European Union.
- Cultural Renaissance: During the 1950s and 1960s, Paris was a cultural hub, attracting artists, writers, and musicians from around the world. It was a hub for the existentialist movement, with figures like Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus shaping intellectual discourse. French cinema flourished with the French New Wave led by visionaries like François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard. Paris remained a fashion capital, with iconic designers such as Coco Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent setting global trends. The 1950s introduced Christian Dior's revolutionary "New Look," redefining women's fashion with its luxurious, hourglass silhouette.
- May 1968, Paris in Turmoil: In May 1968, Paris experienced nationwide student and labor protests, demanding political and social change. The University of Nanterre protests gained momentum and support from labor unions, leading to a general strike that shook the French economy. President de Gaulle's decision to dissolve the National Assembly heightened political instability. Negotiations eventually quelled the strikes, but their impact remained lasting.
- Paris in the Late 20th Century and Beyond: The late 20th century in Paris brought architectural marvels like the Centre Pompidou and La Défense, and a cultural renaissance, influencing music, fashion, and arts. Today, Paris faces challenges like globalization, housing affordability, and environmental sustainability. Projects include expanding public transportation and reducing air pollution. Notre-Dame Cathedral's restoration, prompted by a 2019 fire, is expected to reopen by the end of 2024, with full restoration expected by 2028.
Today, Paris continues to evolve as a global city, seamlessly weaving its rich history and cultural heritage with modern challenges and opportunities. It stands as a symbol of art, fashion, cuisine, and innovation, drawing visitors and residents from every corner of the world.
