These Hungarian words might sound completely strange, even if you already speak some Hungarian 😅

In this video, we share funny and unusual words from our home region in Hungary. These are the kinds of expressions you won’t usually find in textbooks.

It’s spontaneous, real, and a bit chaotic, just how Hungarian actually is in real life.

Have you ever heard any Hungarian words like this? Write it in the comments, I’d love to read them.

In this video, Csilla and Viki talk about some common Hungarian proverbs and explain what they mean in everyday life.

Hungarian is full of colourful expressions, and proverbs are a great way to understand both the language and the culture behind it. In this conversation, we go through several well-known sayings and discuss how they are used and what they mean.

Some of the proverbs we talk about:

“Nem úgy van az, hogy gyere buci, hamm, bekaplak.”“Néz, mint borjú az új kapura.”“A remény hal meg utoljára.”“Türelem rózsát terem.”“Ki korán kel, aranyat lel.”“Sok kicsi sokra megy.”“Minden kezdet nehéz.”

If you are learning Hungarian, proverbs are a fun way to expand your vocabulary and understand how native speakers think and express ideas.

At the end of the video you’ll also see some funny outtakes from the recording.

💬 Tell us in the comments:
Which proverb did you already know?
    Which one is your favourite?

Through short stories from my life, I reflect on well-known sayings such as “Better safe than sorry”, “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today”, and “Slow and steady wins the race”. I explain what these proverbs usually mean, and why I sometimes disagree with them.

Some of the sayings turn out to be true in my own experience, while others feel limiting or stressful in modern life.

This episode is useful for Hungarian learners at B1 level, especially those interested in everyday language, culture, and authentic personal stories.

In this episode. I talk about Valentine’s Day: who celebrates it, who doesn’t, and why. In the full version, you will hear different opinions. Some people think it’s romantic and helps couples stop and focus on each other, while others think, love is shown in small everyday actions, not on one special day. There are also simple ideas for celebrating without gifts or big spending: a nice walk, cooking at home, candles, music, or a cozy day together.

Yoga is extremely popular today, but it is much more than stretching and poses.

In the full episode, I talk about yoga in simple, natural Hungarian: what yoga really is, why it is not only for women, and how it affects the body, the mind, and our emotions.

You will hear about different types of yoga, how to start practicing, what equipment you really need (spoiler: not much), and why patience and regular practice matter – not only in yoga, but also in language learning.

This episode is ideal for pre-intermediate Hungarian learners who want to improve listening skills, learn useful vocabulary, and reflect on motivation, stress, and self-care in Hungarian.

In this episode, I’m talking to Kacper, a Polish-Swedish language learner who started learning Hungarian earlier this year - because his mother-in-law doesn't speak English.
Kacper is living proof that if you focus on relevant, useful vocabulary and start speaking from day one, you don’t need years to have a real conversation in Hungarian.
We talk about his language journey, the challenges of Hungarian grammar, cultural differences between Sweden, Poland and Hungary, and how he manages to communicate after just a few months of practice.
