Across Nova Scotia Municipalities are preparing for Municipal Elections. With this process there are lots of candidates, ideas and visions for the future of our communities. The Town of Yarmouth is no exception; many candidates are running with similar campaign slogans about “Opening Doors”. With so many people talking about the future, the Planning Advisory Committee would like to take the time to step back and talk about the next four years for the Town; what is working and where they would like to see changes.
As part of this episode, the Town of Yarmouth will also provide all the information you need to get to the polls and vote on the big day such as who is running in our area, how to vote and when to vote. -
The Planning Advisory Committee is going to take a summer break! In the mean time, here are some important updates from the planning department. The PAC will be back in September with more Planning on the Edge Episodes.

Provincial Policy, through the Provincial Statements of Interest, dictates that municipalities must address affordable housing in their land use planning documents thereby establishing municipalities as an important player in affordable housing. So what is the situation in the Town of Yarmouth? What does Affordable Housing mean? How can the Town’s planning policies support the development of a variety of affordable housing types and create a healthier community?

There is growing concern about flooding in the Town of Yarmouth, in particular the area surround Argyle Street and Jarvis Road. Flooding in low lying areas is often a result of development pressures, over use of paving and strain on existing infrastructure. Development pressure that has been put on Brood Brook over the years is the underlying issue that has resulted in this residential area having to deal with flooding whenever there is storm or heavy rainfall. The Town of Yarmouth is investigating options for mitigating storm water runoff and reducing the impact of new development on this already fragile system. -
There are a growing number of large vacant buildings in the Town of Yarmouth, some of these buildings were previously or currently owned by the Municipality or other institutions such as churches, legions, community groups, etc.
The Town currently has a policy to recognize Institutional Uses located within the Residential Designation on the Generalized Future Land Use map by zoning such uses as Institutional (I-1). As a result these large buildings may only be used for institutional purposes, which typically are non-profit, and consequently often have difficulty maintaining the significant buildings associated with their use.
The Town of Yarmouth recently considered a number of amendments which were intended to address this concern, allow the existing buildings to generate income and to make the properties more desirable for development.
In this episode the Planning Advisory Committee will discuss this issue, the amendments that have been approved by Council, those which have been turned down by Council and their thoughts on future development for these properties. -
The Town is part way through a yearlong review of our Municipal Planning Strategy. The Municipal Planning Strategy is a guiding visionary document that directs future growth and development in our Town. A very important part of this review process is engaging the public in a meaningful manner. Our Municipal Planning Strategy should be a document that represents the views of all the community stakeholders such as residents, businesses and developers. The Planning Advisory Committee and Council have been working hard to shift public perception surrounding Planning and to better connect with the public so that moving forward we adopt the best policies for the future of our Town. In this episode the Planning Advisory Committee will discuss our progress to date, reflect on the challenges, and look opportunities for the review.

If you would like to meet the committee in person, stop in at one of our Planning Advisory Committee Meetings. We meet the first Tuesday of every month at 7:00pm in Town Council Chambers.
