Dana Ireland Murder: 3 wrongfully convicted, DNA identifies new suspect. A Hawaii resident was found dead in his home days after being identified as a suspect in the 1991 murder, rape and kidnapping of a 23-year-old woman, police said. Dana Ireland was attacked on a fish trail in the Kapoho area of Hawaii Island on Dec. 24, 1991, the Hawaii Police Department said Monday in a news release. She died the next day at the Hilo Medical Center, police added. “For 33 years, our Department has been resolute in investigating the Dana Ireland case,” Hawaii Police Department Chief Benjamin Moszkowicz said in the release. Using "evolved" DNA technology, investigators were able to identify 57-year-old Albert Lauro Jr., who lived in the Kapoho area at the time of the murder, as a potential suspect in the case, according to the department. Before police had enough evidence to charge Lauro Jr. for Ireland's murder, he was found dead in his home on July 23 from an apparent suicide, Moszkowicz said, per ABC News and KITV. "This case is still under investigation. Albert Lauro Jr. has been linked to the victim by DNA; however, his exact involvement is still under investigation. And his death was ruled a suicide by the forensic pathologist," Hawaii Police Department Capt. Rio Amon-Wilkins told USA TODAY on Thursday. 2 NYPD Officers Shot on Lower East Side in Chase of Robbery Suspect A gunman shot two police sergeants who were trying to arrest him minutes after an armed robbery in a mahjong parlor on the Lower East Side in Manhattan on Thursday, Police Department officials said. One officer was shot in the groin, and the other was grazed by a bullet in the leg, Joseph Kenny, the chief of detectives, said at a news conference on Thursday at Bellevue Hospital, where the officers were being treated for their wounds. Both were in stable condition, said Chief Kenny, who was joined at the news conference by Mayor Eric Adams. The sergeant who was grazed will be released from the hospital on Thursday night, and the sergeant who was shot in the groin will be held overnight for observation. A man, Joshua Dorsett, 22, was taken into custody at the scene, Chief Kenny said. Around 4:15 p.m., the police responded to a 911 call regarding a man on the second floor of a building on Canal Street near Eldridge Street, Chief Kenny said. The man, whom the police later identified as Mr. Dorsett, had pulled out a gun and pointed it at several women at the mahjong parlor, a popular neighborhood spot where people gather and bet money on mahjong games, he said. Mr. Dorsett demanded that the women hand over their purses. He grabbed a number of purses, ran out of the building and fled north on foot, Chief Kenny said. Details are beginning to emerge about how the 20-year-old would-be assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks was able to get close enough to Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday to shoot the former United States president in the ear.
Evading Secret Service agents and local law enforcement officers, Crooks reached a rooftop about 140 metres (450ft) from where Trump was speaking on a stage and fired, grazing the Republican candidate running in the presidential election in November.
Crooks was shot dead by the Secret Service immediately after firing, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.In the days since the shooting, digital “bread crumbs” have been gathered via media outlets, photographers at the rally and personal cellphone videos depicting the events leading up to the shooting.

Accused Gilgo Beach Serial Killer's lawyer points to other suspects. Suspected Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann may seek separate trials for the six murders he is currently charged with, according to his defense attorney. Heuermann, 60, took longer to get to court than anticipated, spurring Judge Timothy Mazzei to quip to court officers, “Did you walk him over from the jail?” Asa Ellerup, Heuermann’s estranged wife, also appeared in court with their family dog, who was recently registered as a service dog. She did not speak to reporters. Heuermann appeared to shake his head as prosecutors announced the turning over of new evidence to the defense, including up to 30 more terabytes of data seized from the searches of his house. The data includes 1,600 pages of lab reports. The prosecution team also announced that up to 60,000 pages of evidence had been turned over to the defense since his June 6 court appearance, when he was charged with the murders of Sandra Costilla and Jessica Taylor. “There’s definitely going to be a motion at some point in time to sever the [trials for the] six individuals,” Michael Brown, Heuermann’s defense attorney, told reporters. “The most recent two were victims of the indictment, specifically Costilla and Taylor, I know strategically why the prosecutor wanted to put them in, because the more the merrier, but they have nothing to do with the others. The MO is different, the way that the murders allegedly were carried out were different, where those bodies were deposited or left is completely different. Swat Team on Trump: Communication disaster led to the shooting of 4. #Trump #Sniper #Assassinationattempt NEW YORK — Something seemed off from the moment Beaver County SWAT sniper Gregory Nicol spotted a man skulking around the outskirts of the site where former President Donald Trump was about to take the stage on July 13. From his second-floor post inside the AGR complex at the fairgrounds in Butler, Pennsylvania, Nicol noticed the young man in a gray T-shirt, lurking. "He was looking up and down the building ... It just seemed out of place," Nicol, assistant leader of the Beaver County SWAT team, told ABC News in an interview that airs Monday on Good Morning America, "It just didn't seem right." Nicol noticed an unattended bike and backpack. And he saw the man looking up and around, then pulling a rangefinder from his pocket. There was no apparent reason to have a distance-gauging device at a political rally featuring the man who, in a few days, would accept his party's presidential nomination. The sharpshooter snapped pictures of the suspicious-looking man and the bike, then flagged it to fellow snipers from his team assigned to the event and called it into the command group. Nicol would be the first officer to issue a warning about 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. Secret Service Snipers notified 90 minutes before shots were fired. #SecretService #FBI #Assassination Security at former President Trump’s Butler, Pa., rally first noticed the man who later shot at Trump more than 90 minutes before shots were fired, according to texts reported by The New York Times, adding to criticism of the Secret Service’s handling of the event. A local countersniper first noticed gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks at 4:26 p.m., just more than an hour and a half before he climbed onto a nearby roof and shot at Trump, nicking his ear, killing a supporter in the crowd and injuring two others. The officer, who was clocking out of his shift, notified colleagues about a suspicious man sitting at a picnic table near their lookout point via text. Additional texts at about 5:40 p.m. show officers discussing that they should inform Secret Service after Crooks was spotted again, this time using a range finder. “Call it in to command and have a uniform check it out,” the text reads. The series of security failures that allowed Crooks to get into position to shoot Trump has shocked Congress, sparking a House investigation as well as an independent probe. Secret Service Director Kimberley Cheatle resigned from her post last week after being grilled by the House Oversight and Accountability Committee about the attempted assassination. Police on scene were unable to find Crooks again after being made aware of his presence near the building he later climbed. Just after Trump took the stage at 6:03 p.m., members of the crowd pointed out a suspicious man on a nearby rooftop. FBI Director Christopher Wray testified last week that a local Butler police officer was then boosted onto the roof to confront Crooks, but was met with a gun being pointed at him. With no free hands to grab his own gun and fire back, he dropped to avoid being shot. Just “seconds” later, Wray said, Crooks fired eight rounds towards Trump. Shooting: Can we trust the FBI to Investigate the Secret Service? #FBI #SecretService #Assassination TOPLINE Some police officials were aware 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks was lurking near a Donald Trump rally earlier this month for more than 90 minutes before he opened fire, text messages obtained by The New York Times suggest—the latest revelation about security problems ahead of the assassination attempt. The Times on Sunday published a series of text messages sent amongst a local police countersniper team, including a warning from one man who was leaving his shift and texted his colleagues at 4:26 p.m. to warn them of a man who'd parked near them and would have seen the team sitting armed inside what was supposed to be a secure building. More than an hour later, another countersniper took a photo of Crooks and told his colleagues Crooks was seen pointing a rangefinder in the direction of the rally, suggesting they tell the Secret Service about his location. Half an hour after that, at 6:11 p.m., Crooks managed to fire shots from the roof of a warehouse connected to the same building the countersnipers who’d been warned about him were inside, without any local law enforcement agents or members of the Secret Service having located him despite his being armed and within 400 feet of the former president.

In a court filing made public Tuesday afternoon, Kohberger’s public defenders argued that their client’s constitutional right to an impartial jury will be infringed upon without moving the trial out of Latah County, where the crime occurred. In their legal brief, which runs 300-plus pages long, they cited as further justification the “extensive publicity that is ongoing and inflammatory,” including the dissemination of inaccurate information in the news and on social media that would also be inadmissible at trial. “The publicity has been extremely pervasive in the small community of Latah County,” wrote Anne Taylor, Kohberger’s lead public defender. “Remediations, such as enlarging the jury pool, will not cure the problem.” Ada County, the state’s largest county with more than 500,000 residents and home to the capital, Boise, has “more than 10 times as many potential jurors than Latah County,” and gives Kohberger the best chance at an impartial jury, the filing read. 2 Sinaloa Cartel Kingpins are arrested in El Paso Texas and detained The arrest in the United States of two top leaders of the Sinaloa drug cartel came after what initial accounts suggest was a dramatic betrayal that saw one of the men, a son of the notorious drug lord known as El Chapo, lure the other under false pretenses onto a plane that delivered them both into the hands of American law enforcement. One of the operatives taken into custody, Ismael Zambada García, was arguably the most powerful criminal in Mexico, a septuagenarian kingpin who helped to found the Sinaloa cartel with El Chapo decades ago and remained at large even after his partner was extradited to the United States and convicted at a trial in New York City. The other was one of El Chapo’s own sons, Joaquín Guzmán López, who with his brothers had inherited a large swath of their father’s illicit business moving massive amounts of cocaine and fentanyl into the United States, Europe and elsewhere. The two men were arrested at a small local airport outside of El Paso, Texas, on Thursday afternoon after their Beechcraft King Air plane landed there on a flight from Mexico, U.S. officials said. Mr. Guzmán López had persuaded Mr. Zambada García to join him on the flight by saying they were going to look at real estate, officials said, but the plane instead headed north across the border. Cheatle, to resign after her testimony on Monday in which she repeatedly refused to answer specific questions about the security failures that led to an assassination attempt of former President Donald J. Trump. Representatives James R. Comer, Republican of Kentucky and the chairman of the committee, and Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the top Democrat on the panel, joined several members of the committee in demanding Ms. Cheatle’s resignation. Suspected Donald Trump rally shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks posted a cryptic message to to the online gaming website Steam that read “July 13 will be my premiere, watch as it unfolds” before he opened fired at the former president and his supporters on that date at a campaign stop in Butler, Pennsylvania, multiple outlets reported. The post was discovered as investigators continue to comb through Crooks' digital footprint in an attempt to determine why the 20-year-old shot at the former president and if he acted alone in planning the plot that left one person dead and several others seriously injured. Investigators also found that, in addition to searching for information about Trump's Butler rally, Crooks searched for dates of the Democratic National Convention in August and for the dates of other Trump events. Cheatle, will appear before lawmakers for the first time on Monday as scrutiny intensifies over the security failures at the Pennsylvania rally where a gunman tried to kill former President Donald J. Trump, the agency announced on Friday. “The Secret Service is fully accountable for the safety of its protectees. We are committed to better understanding what happened before, during, and after the assassination attempt of former President Trump to ensure it never happens again,” Anthony Guglielmi, spokesman for the agency, wrote on social media on Friday. As of Thursday, it was unclear whether Ms. Cheatle would appear before the committee. A letter sent by the Department of Homeland Security to lawmakers on Wednesday had urged the committee to allow for a later hearing date to give her more time to prepare. Thomas Crooks shooter of former President Trump, did he act alone? #thomascrooks #donaldtrump #Assassination The Investigation: F.B.I. officials told Congress that the 20-year-old gunman who tried to kill Donald Trump used his cellphone and other devices to search for images of Trump and President Biden. Security Blind Spots: Even as investigators continue to examine what happened at the Trump rally, it is already clear that there were multiple missed opportunities to stop the gunman before the situation turned deadly. The Gunman: In interviews, former classmates of the suspect described him as intelligent but solitary, someone who tried to avoid teasing by fellow students. Secret Service Director: Kimberly Cheatle returned in 2022 to lead the agency she had served for nearly 30 years. Now, the assassination attempt on Trump has thrown her tenure into uncertainty. Fears of What’s Next: Among voters, there is growing anxiety that America’s political divide is nearly beyond repair, and the shooting only made things worse. A spectator who had been standing just outside the grounds said in an interview with the BBC that a few minutes into Mr. Trump’s speech, he noticed that someone was “bear-crawling up the roof,” clearly armed with a rifle, and that he tried to notify the police. Law enforcement officials later said that the gunman had opened fire from an elevated position outside the rally’s security perimeter. After the shooting, the gunman’s body was seen on the rooftop of one of the buildings to Mr. Trump’s right. An AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle was recovered at the scene, according to law enforcement officials. “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear,” Mr. Trump said in a post on Truth Social, his social media platform. “I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.” One spectator at the rally, Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old firefighter, was shot and killed.
