  • Take Pride and Prejudice, set it in modern-day Cincinnati, throw in a reality dating show, and give the Bennet sisters some very 21st-century quirks, and youā€™ve got Eligible, Curtis Sittenfeldā€™s contemporary retelling of Austenā€™s classic.

This week, we break down what Eligible gets right (Mr. and Mrs. Bennetā€™s modern updates are particularly well done) and where it might miss the mark (cough Liz and Darcyā€™s chemistry). Plus, Alicia may not be a Bachelor fan, but that doesnā€™t mean sheā€™s above a good reality TV bingeā€”something we fully explore in a side tangent.

Was this a fresh, fun take or a meh, modern miss? Letā€™s discuss!

  • Book Clubbers, this is the episode for all of you who love indie romance, Jane Austen, and a good author origin story! We got to sit down with one of Emilie's absolute favorite modern authors, Jennifer Peel, and letā€™s just sayā€”this was a major fangirl moment. šŸŽ‰

Jennifer shares how her love for Pride and Prejudice began with a book club (ha!) and how it eventually lead her to write her own P&P-inspired book. She and Emilie swap thoughts on Austen adaptations, including the best Mr. Collins portrayals (Matt Smith in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies tops the list). But this conversation isnā€™t just about Janeā€”Jennifer opens up about her writing journey, starting a little before age 40, and how she still gets nervous every time she publishes a book!

We also dive into the world of indie publishing, with Jennifer discussing her ambitious publishing schedule (four books a year!), how she engages with readers, and why she loves writing second-chance romance. Plus, she spills details on an upcoming Persuasion variation she's planning to write.

If youā€™re a fan of modern romance, self-published success stories, or just love hearing authors geek out over Jane Austen, you wonā€™t want to miss this episode!

  • What happens when a die-hard Pride and Prejudice fan finds herself in a very Darcy-and-Elizabeth-esque romance? Thatā€™s exactly what Jennifer Peel explores in Without Pride and Prejudice, a charming contemporary love story that manages to honor Austenā€™s classic without simply rehashing it.

This week, Emilie could not contain her excitementā€”sheā€™s been a longtime fan of Jennifer Peelā€™s rom-coms, so seeing her take on P&P was a dream come true! And the best part? The book actually respects Monroeā€™s Austen obsession, rather than making her conveniently forget the original plot so she can relive it herself. (Finally!)

Alicia, meanwhile, found it sweet, fun, and bingeable in one sittingā€”high praise indeed! So, does this book strike the perfect balance between Austen love and originality? Letā€™s discuss.

  • This week, weā€™re taking a detour from the world of Darcy and Elizabeth to dive into The Other Bennet Girl by Janice Hadlowā€”a novel that gives Mary Bennet her time to shine! The story follows Mary from her childhood in the shadow of her "prettier" sisters all the way to several years after the events of Pride and Prejudice, exploring themes of self-worth, personal growth, and what it means to find your place in the world.

We dig into Maryā€™s evolution as a character, her romantic choices, and how well the book aligns with the spirit of Austenā€™s world. While we don't always agree on the direction the book takes, we have a lot of fun discussing it!

If youā€™ve ever wanted Mary Bennet to get her momentā€”or just love a lively book chatā€”this episode is for you!

  • Weā€™re back from our break and couldnā€™t be more excited to return with a very special guest on The Pride and Prejudice Book Clubā€”author Sophie Turner! šŸŽ‰ You might remember her from The Crimes of Elizabeth Darcy, the JAFF telenovela that had us marveling at its bonkers yet brilliant plot twists.

We first met Sophie at JAFFCon back in November, when she graciously agreed to come on the pod. In this episode, she shares how her first attempt at reading Pride and Prejudice wasā€¦ less than successful, how she found her niche in the JAFF community, and why she loves putting Elizabeth and Darcy through the emotional wringer.

From her favorite tropes (spoiler: amnesia is up there!) to the meticulous research that goes into crafting her stories, Sophie gives us a behind-the-scenes look at her writing process and even teases whatā€™s nextā€”including a possible choose-your-own-adventure variation that has us itching to pre-order already! We also dive into some deeper themes like nature vs. nurture and what falling in love means in Austen's world.

If youā€™re as fascinated by regency-era legal systems as Alicia now is, or you just love hearing about how authors bring our favorite characters to life in new ways, you wonā€™t want to miss this one!

  • Weā€™re still on break for one more week, but weā€™re revisiting The Crimes of Elizabeth Darcy by Sophie C. Turnerā€”because honestly? This episode has lived rent-free in our heads for a YEAR. If you havenā€™t listened (or just need a refresher), nowā€™s the perfect time to dive back in.

Why? Because next week, we have a special treat: an interview with the author herself, Sophie C. Turner! šŸŽ‰

In case you missed it the first time:

Darcy is lost at seaā€¦ or was he? After four years and a convenient case of amnesia, he returns to London to find Elizabeth trapped in a nightmare marriage. With twists involving a trial, treasure, and even murder, this book had us constantly asking, what NOW?!

Despite the wild premise, our discussion went deepā€”we explored how reframing tragedy changes us, debated nature vs. nurture in parenting, and reflected on the importance of sharing burdens, even when no one can fix them.

So, Book Clubbers, have you read this one? Did the plot twists keep you guessing? Let's talk about it! And donā€™t forget to tune in next week for our interview with Sophie C. Turner!

  • While weā€™re still on our winter break, we wanted to revisit one of the most compelling reads from the past yearā€”Jessica Evansā€™ The Muse. This modern variation had both Emilie and Alicia fully hooked, but it also raised some serious ethical questions.

From power dynamics to shifting social standards, we dug deep into how these themes impact our enjoyment of variations. Is this something all modern adaptations will have to grapple with? And why, despite our reservations, could we not put this book down??

If you missed this episode the first time around, nowā€™s the perfect time to catch up! And if youā€™ve already read The Muse, weā€™d love to hear your thoughts :)

  • Weā€™re on break right now, which means itā€™s the perfect time to revisit one of our all-time favorite books from Season 1ā€”Unequal Affections by Lara S. Ormiston! Whether youā€™ve been here since the beginning or just recently joined us, this episode is a must-listen for all Book Clubbers.

In case you missed it, Unequal Affections explores a tantalizing ā€œwhat ifā€ scenario: what if Elizabeth had said ā€œyesā€ instead of ā€œnoā€ to Darcyā€™s first proposal? Our hero and heroine are taken on a new path, and while it may seem simpler at times than the original tale, Elizabeth and Darcy still need to navigate the same misunderstandingsā€”but in a different order, with fresh emotional beats.

So, if you didnā€™t catch this episode the first time, or if you just need an excuse to read it again, nowā€™s your chance. Grab a blanket, your favorite hot drink, and tune in! ā˜•šŸ“–

  • Happy New Year, Book Clubbers!

We were originally going to take this week off, but instead, we're diving into Colors by Laura Moretti, a beautifully written short story available on Archive of Our Own. In this tender forced-marriage scenario, Elizabeth Bennetā€™s world feels drained of colorā€”until Darcy slowly helps her begin to find hope again.

The story is short, but it packs an emotional punch while delicately addressing the realities of depression. It's beautiful, and sad, and somehow still hopeful. We know this is a deeply personal topic, and weā€™ve done our best to talk about it with care and respect for the many ways people experience depression.

Thank you for joining us on our podcast this year! We canā€™t wait to kick off Season 3 in 2024.

  • This week, we sit down with author Laura Morettiā€”the writer whose Pride and Prejudice fan fiction and Regency romances have had us binge-reading for a month straight. Imagine our surprise when we found out sheā€™s French! (Yes, she writes these incredible English novels in her non-native language, and weā€™re still amazed by that.)

Laura joins Emilie and Alicia to share her writing journey, including her transition from writing in French to English and how her background as a comic book writer and role-playing gamer shapes her storytelling. We dive into her creative process, from crafting modern Austen variations to juggling multiple projects as a self-proclaimed ā€œpantser.ā€

We also explore the cultural connections between French and English aristocracies, get a sneak peek into her current writing projects, and learn what genre sheā€™s looking to tackle next (true storyā€”it surprised us!).

This episode marks our final author interview of 2024 and the closing book of Season 2. Thank you for joining us on this journey. We canā€™t wait to see you in Season 3 for even more adventures in P&P!

  • What happens when you throw Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy into an alternate English history with unexpected battles, changed fortunes, and no room for declarations of love? This week, Alicia and Emilie dive into Do You Love Me?, a reimagining that picks up post-Hunsford Proposal and plunges our favorite couple into a world turned upside-down by an unexpected French invasion. Darcyā€™s still head over heels (but stuck on mute), and Elizabeth? Sheā€™s navigating her new life as a paid companionā€”until fate brings them back together. We discuss everything from what makes a deep and meaningful conversation, to whether being crossed in love is, tragically, part of the human condition. And should Elizabeth be concerned about gossip? Oh, and of course, we had to tackle the age-old question: how soon is too soon to say ā€œI love youā€? ā¤ļø If youā€™ve ever dreamed of Darcy and Elizabeth teaming up against the oddsā€”or wondered how Jane Austenā€™s world might feel with a slightly different historyā€”this oneā€™s for you. --- šŸŽµ Music Credit:Pride & Prejudice Book Club Theme composed, performed, and arranged by Megan Mason. šŸ“š Curious what we will be reading next? • What if Darcy and Elizabethā€™s love story played out in a future dystopian world...with aliens? Enter Pemberley by Laura Morettiā€”a sci-fi reimagining of Pride and Prejudice that had us hooked from the first page.

Yes, itā€™s our third Laura Moretti book (and no, weā€™re not sorry). What makes Pemberley so special? While it adds fascinating sci-fi twists, the story manages to stay grounded in the complex dynamics of Darcy and Elizabethā€™s relationship. The classic themes of pride and prejudice play out in an exciting and fascinating way, even when the main characters are struggling for survival or hiding from toxic Beasts falling from the sky.

We love how Moretti takes creative risks while keeping the heart of Austenā€™s story alive, proving yet again that genre is no barrier to a great retelling. If you're in the mood for something a little different...listen now!

  • Still swooning from last weekā€™s deep dive into Laura Morettiā€™s Heartbroken, we couldnā€™t resist picking up another one of her stories: Who is Elizabeth Bennetā€™s Soulmate? This Regency variation puts a lyrical twist on the beloved courtship of Elizabeth and Darcy, exploring a world where you can literally hear the music of your soulmate.

While the premise might remind Book Clubbers of An Ever Fixed Mark, Morettiā€™s take stands out for its fascinating world-building and thought-provoking take on relationships.

In this episode, Alicia and Emilie break down the storyā€™s unique spin on soulmates, weighing in on questions like:

Is ā€œfreezingā€ really a bad survival strategy in tense situations? Can soulmates be more than just romantic partners? What would you be willing to sacrifice for a person you love?

We have to take a moment to gush over Morettiā€™s versatility as a writer. The natural, realistic and modern style of Heartbroken couldnā€™t feel more different from the Austen-esque, classic tone of Who is Elizabeth Bennetā€™s Soulmate? If we didnā€™t know better, weā€™d never have guessed these two books were written by the same author! Her ability to shift styles so seamlessly is awe inspiring.

If you haven't already, go read Who is Elizabeth Bennet's Soulmate? and tune in for some light philosophy discussions with the Book Club!

  • This week, Alicia and Emilie dive into Heartbroken by Laura Moretti, a modern Pride and Prejudice retelling that kicks off with Lizzy sending Darcy a fateful text months after their explosive fight at the Hunsford Bar...because she is bored. From there, Moretti crafts a tale that hits all the classic beats of Pride and Prejudice while maintaining its own fiercely independent vibe (and a lot of overthinking!)

We had a blast reading this one and went deep into some fun tangents. How does knowing someone likes you influence your actions? What even is flirting? Why do we do it? Is Alicia really flirty or just playful???

  • In this weekā€™s episode, Alicia and Emilie dive into The Lake House at Ramsgate by MJ Strattonā€”a masterful mash-up of Pride and Prejudice with the 2006 film The Lake House (yes, the one with Sandra Bullock, Keanu Reeves, and some delightfully wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey stuff). This is our second P&P + movie combo (third if you count the All Too Well short film), and we are loving this trend! • This week, Alicia and Emilie dive into Just Between Us by the JAFF mashup queen herself, Jayne Bamber! Known for her imaginative reworkings of Austen's world, Bamber has outdone herself this time, blending new characters and plot points with the heartache-laden vibes of All Too Well. But there's a twistā€”this love story gets a happy ending.

Expect a fun, layered episode as we hunt for Easter eggs, pop culture references, and red scarves (you know the one), and unpack whether a little ignorance really is bliss in a relationship. Emilie, as always, gets a little hyper-focused on character communication, while Alicia couldn't get enough of Bamber's skill at weaving familiar Austen themes with new, modern inspirations.

Whether you're a Swiftie, an Austenite, or just here for the sweet romance of it all, thereā€™s something in this episode for you!

  • In our Halloween special šŸŽƒ, Alicia and Emilie dive into the world of A Witch for Mr. Darcy by Jessica L. Jackson, a supernatural twist on our beloved Pride and Prejudice. Itā€™s safe to sayā€¦ opinions were mixed. Alicia enjoyed the spooky vibes and the fresh focus on side characters (shoutout to Mary!), while Emilie struggled with Elizabethā€™s portrayal as an all-capable witch who never stumbles. But this book also got us thinking about something deeper: Mr. Bennetā€™s tendency to let Elizabeth shoulder way too much responsibility. This ā€œparentificationā€ sparked a real conversation between Alicia and Emilie about the pressures we place on childrenā€”and how we're trying to avoid putting too much on our own kids. How much is too much for a child? In true Halloween spirit, we touch on what really gives us the chills in stories. Emilie admits possession (loss of control šŸ˜±) keeps her up at night, while Alicia confesses sheā€™s unnerved by books and tv shows that let readers peek into a truly evil mind. Plus, weā€™re dying to know: are there any Pride and Prejudice meets True Crime podcast crossover retellings out there? Asking for, umā€¦ a friend. šŸ‘€ ----

  • In this episode, Alicia and Emilie dive into Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev, a modern, gender-swapped retelling of Pride and Prejudiceā€”but with fresh, unexpected twists! Both co-hosts loved how Dev captured the heart of Austenā€™s classic themes without sticking to a predictable beat-by-beat remake. They discuss how the book thoughtfully weaves in heavier issues like medical ethics in terminal cases, the pressures of family politics, and the emotional weight of infertilityā€”all while still delivering plenty of drama. Alicia especially appreciated how Dev handled these sensitive topics with depth, while Emilie had something to say about guiltā€™s ā€œtenacious tentaclesā€ and how it entangles the characters (and letā€™s face it, us too!).

Plus, this book made them both so hungry with its mouthwatering descriptions of food! They take a little detour to talk about how their tastes have evolved over time (spoiler alert: it involves a lot more spicy food and cheese).

Whether youā€™re here for the modern romance, the family drama, or just the foodie talk, thereā€™s something in this episode for every Book Clubber.
