This week, weâre taking a detour from the world of Darcy and Elizabeth to dive into The Other Bennet Girl by Janice Hadlowâa novel that gives Mary Bennet her time to shine! The story follows Mary from her childhood in the shadow of her "prettier" sisters all the way to several years after the events of Pride and Prejudice, exploring themes of self-worth, personal growth, and what it means to find your place in the world.
We dig into Maryâs evolution as a character, her romantic choices, and how well the book aligns with the spirit of Austenâs world. While we don't always agree on the direction the book takes, we have a lot of fun discussing it!

Weâre back from our break and couldnât be more excited to return with a very special guest on The Pride and Prejudice Book Clubâauthor Sophie Turner! đ You might remember her from The Crimes of Elizabeth Darcy, the JAFF telenovela that had us marveling at its bonkers yet brilliant plot twists.
We first met Sophie at JAFFCon back in November, when she graciously agreed to come on the pod. In this episode, she shares how her first attempt at reading Pride and Prejudice was⊠less than successful, how she found her niche in the JAFF community, and why she loves putting Elizabeth and Darcy through the emotional wringer.

While weâre still on our winter break, we wanted to revisit one of the most compelling reads from the past yearâJessica Evansâ The Muse. This modern variation had both Emilie and Alicia fully hooked, but it also raised some serious ethical questions.
From power dynamics to shifting social standards, we dug deep into how these themes impact our enjoyment of variations. Is this something all modern adaptations will have to grapple with? And why, despite our reservations, could we not put this book down??

Happy New Year, Book Clubbers!
We were originally going to take this week off, but instead, we're diving into Colors by Laura Moretti, a beautifully written short story available on Archive of Our Own. In this tender forced-marriage scenario, Elizabeth Bennetâs world feels drained of colorâuntil Darcy slowly helps her begin to find hope again.
The story is short, but it packs an emotional punch while delicately addressing the realities of depression. It's beautiful, and sad, and somehow still hopeful. We know this is a deeply personal topic, and weâve done our best to talk about it with care and respect for the many ways people experience depression.

This week, we sit down with author Laura Morettiâthe writer whose Pride and Prejudice fan fiction and Regency romances have had us binge-reading for a month straight. Imagine our surprise when we found out sheâs French! (Yes, she writes these incredible English novels in her non-native language, and weâre still amazed by that.)
Laura joins Emilie and Alicia to share her writing journey, including her transition from writing in French to English and how her background as a comic book writer and role-playing gamer shapes her storytelling. We dive into her creative process, from crafting modern Austen variations to juggling multiple projects as a self-proclaimed âpantser.â
We also explore the cultural connections between French and English aristocracies, get a sneak peek into her current writing projects, and learn what genre sheâs looking to tackle next (true storyâit surprised us!).

The classic themes of pride and prejudice play out in an exciting and fascinating way, even when the main characters are struggling for survival or hiding from toxic Beasts falling from the sky.

This Regency variation puts a lyrical twist on the beloved courtship of Elizabeth and Darcy, exploring a world where you can literally hear the music of your soulmate.
While the premise might remind Book Clubbers of An Ever Fixed Mark, Morettiâs take stands out for its fascinating world-building and thought-provoking take on relationships.
In this episode, Alicia and Emilie break down the storyâs unique spin on soulmates, weighing in on questions like:

This week, Alicia and Emilie dive into Heartbroken by Laura Moretti, a modern Pride and Prejudice retelling that kicks off with Lizzy sending Darcy a fateful text months after their explosive fight at the Hunsford Bar...because she is bored. From there, Moretti crafts a tale that hits all the classic beats of Pride and Prejudice while maintaining its own fiercely independent vibe (and a lot of overthinking!)
We had a blast reading this one and went deep into some fun tangents. How does knowing someone likes you influence your actions? What even is flirting? Why do we do it? Is Alicia really flirty or just playful???

In this weekâs episode, Alicia and Emilie dive into The Lake House at Ramsgate by MJ Strattonâa masterful mash-up of Pride and Prejudice with the 2006 film The Lake House (yes, the one with Sandra Bullock, Keanu Reeves, and some delightfully wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey stuff). In our Halloween special đ, Alicia and Emilie dive into the world of A Witch for Mr. Darcy by Jessica L. Jackson, a supernatural twist on our beloved Pride and Prejudice. Itâs safe to say⊠opinions were mixed. Alicia enjoyed the spooky vibes and the fresh focus on side characters (shoutout to Mary!), while Emilie struggled with Elizabethâs portrayal as an all-capable witch who never stumbles. But this book also got us thinking about something deeper: Mr. Bennetâs tendency to let Elizabeth shoulder way too much responsibility. This âparentificationâ sparked a real conversation between Alicia and Emilie about the pressures we place on childrenâand how we're trying to avoid putting too much on our own kids. How much is too much for a child? In true Halloween spirit, we touch on what really gives us the chills in stories. Both co-hosts loved how Dev captured the heart of Austenâs classic themes without sticking to a predictable beat-by-beat remake. They discuss how the book thoughtfully weaves in heavier issues like medical ethics in terminal cases, the pressures of family politics, and the emotional weight of infertilityâall while still delivering plenty of drama. In this weekâs episode, Alicia and Emilie dive into Pride and Persistence by Jeanna Ellsworthâa fun, quirky twist on Pride and Prejudice that sees Darcy proposing to ElizabethâŠmore than once! After a familiar disastrous proposal, Darcy suffers an accident that leaves him with short-term memory loss, and his first order of business in his confused state? Proposing to Miss Elizabeth Bennet. Again. And again. And again!
Alicia was worried the repetition might wear thin, but she was pleasantly surprised by how the author kept each proposal fresh and engaging. Both hosts found the story cute, but as sometimes happens, their final opinions differâtune in to see where they each land!
We also get into a side discussion on the double standards society holds for the wealthy versus the rest of us, tying in some current pop culture moments for extra spice.
