Suzanne Smith … Renters Rights Under Labour
Landlord | Blogger | Podcaster | Former General Counsel
Suzanne Smith is a lawyer turned self-managing landlord with a portfolio of houses in Maidstone, Kent.
She came to property investing fairly late when she “retired” as a corporate lawyer at the age of 51, after working for 25 years in senior in-house legal roles for multinational biotech companies.
Suzanne started to share what she was learning as a landlord on her Instagram account, @indie_landlord, with practical reels that also drew on her experience and training as a lawyer.
This led to her setting up her blog, The Independent Landlord, in August 2022, which provides reliable, free content on all aspects of being a landlord. It’s grown to be one of the biggest blogs for landlords, with thousands of subscribers to her weekly newsletter.
She co-hosts a new weekly podcast called Good Landlording with Richard Jackson, a landlord with a large portfolio who runs the property management software, Alphaletz.
Suzanne is also an independent member of Propertymark’s disciplinary tribunal.

Paul Million … Life of a Fruit Cake
Paul Million has been developing property in Darlington for three decades. His diverse portfolio ranges from Industrial units and commercial to residential/supported tenancies, commercial conversions, single let accommodation, professional co-living house shares and serviced apartments.
Paul owns a portfolio of 60 Buy to let properties, in addition to 30 properties in 50/50 joint ventures. 150 tenancies in total and rising with a few more projects before he semi retires into property & brainspace training.
He has ongoing interests in several exciting and innovative projects going forward in Darlington & surrounding areas, in addition to 'The Property Thing', a local networking event co-run by Paul and co-hosting BBC Business Buyers Club NE. He continues to further his education by serving as mentor to those around him & particularly wants to help ADHDers & Neuro-Divergents succeed in property & business.
Paul speaks fairly widely on the subject of ‘Being A Fruitcake’ and utilising the upsides of Neuro-Divergence and outsourcing the downsides.

Andrew studied Economics and International Politics at the University of Birmingham. Here he was lucky enough to research various topical policy graduating in 1997. His first job took him to Washington DC to work as an intern for a US Congressman and write a number of speeches for the Congressman.
On returning to the UK, he began his career in finance on the Eurobond desk of SBC Warburg (now UBS) but moved to equities two years later to join the UBS smaller companies team at the end of 1999. Andrew subsequently headed smaller company sales On returning to the UK, he began his career in finance on the Eurobond desk of SBC Warburg (now UBS) but moved to equities and sales trading at Williams de Broë and then held senior equity sales positions with Credit Agricole Cheuvreux and SEB in London and New York from 2007. In addition to his responsibilities at Plain English Finance, he has also been a partner at boutique life sciences investment bank, WG Partners, since January 2015.
During his career in finance, he has met with the senior management teams of well over one thousand companies and with several hundred professional investors. Andrew has regularly been involved in high profile stock market transactions. These have included the Kingdom of Sweden’s sales of Nordea Bank AB in 2013 (totalling $7.6 billion) and the stock market flotation of several dozen companies including the likes of: easyJet, HMV, Burberry, Campari, Carluccio’s, the Carbon Trust, lastminute.com.
Since founding Plain English Finance in 2011, Andrew has appeared in numerous national and specialist financial publications Michael Winterbottom’s 2015 film “The Emperor’s New Clothes” and interviewed by Eamonn Holmes for theChannel 5 including: The Mail on Sunday, The Mirror, CityAM, The Spectator, Shares and MoneyWeek magazines, YourMoney, This Is programme “How the other half live”.

As discussed in the podcast Jay's daughter has DYRK1A. It’s a super rare genetic disorder, where very little is still known about the Syndrome and how it affects those who have it long term.
We know that there are approximately 700 people globally who have been diagnosed with DYRK1A and there is a BBC TV series ‘There she goes’ where the young girl in the show, who is considered autistic, is diagnosed as having DYRK1A Syndrome - the chap who is the writer for the show, has a daughter with this condition and highlighting the real life struggles of all parties involved. The father in the show is played by David Tenant.
