    When I first started my business, I was pretty precious about every little thing.

    I purchased beautiful little envelopes and cards in my brand colors and paraphernalia with my brand logo on it thinking everyone would want those things.

    I sent my clients onboarding packages by mail with a fancy notebook, pen and, what I thought were other fun things.

    Of course, I didnā€™t consider the expense of these things either in my time or how it was digging into my profits.

    I spent so much time on things that I thought mattered and not enough time on the things that really did.

    Sometimes, I would send my clients birthday and Christmas gifts. I put a lot of thought into them.

    And when I didnā€™t, it was because I couldnā€™t decide what to send and I would feel badly about that.

    I wanted my clients to feel special. I wanted to show them I cared. And, I think I may have been compensating for my newness as a coach because I felt I was not enough.

    It breaks my heart to see so many coaches stuck. Iā€™ve been there.

    When new coaches reach out to work with me, I ask them for a snapshot of what they're doing to build their business.

    Nearly all admit that their head is spinning because theyā€™re doing stuff like this:

    Ā· Looking at other coach's websites, which inevitably is anxiety producing. And, you donā€™t know if that site is client-winning or a dud.

    Ā· Force feeding massive amount of information.

    Ā· Surfing for answers to BIG questions like how do I choose my niche or what do I need to do to earn well as a coach? Answers are complex and itā€™s best to get actual support for those things.

    Ā· And, investing in programs out of fear, sure this next shiny object will solve all their problems.

    That fire hose of confusing information leaves you breathless with overwhelm and unable to move forward.

    This is what I call the new coach swirl and spin and itā€™s time to snap out of it.

    One of my VIP clients emailed me asking if she could coach me in our next session to get more practice.

    It wasnā€™t without risk. How might it affect our mentoring relationship?

    I decided to say ā€˜yesā€™. It had to be something real for me because making something up would not give her practice. And it needed to be complex enough to truly challenge her.

    I had been deliberating about a very serious decision. Something that involved my health, finances and it affected my partner too. I felt gifted because I really did need an objective person to share this dilemma with.

    So in our next session we jumped into the co-creative relationship.

    I am relatively new to LinkedIn, and I have to say, 18 months in, it is hands down my favorite of the socials.

    As a highly experienced coach, I can say without hesitation that not every coach will be the best client for me. And not every client will be the best client for you either.

    In fact, some clients could end up being difficult to work with. In that case you and the client may suffer each time you have a session. And thatā€™s sad because here you are intending to do good yet harm could be done.

    I assure you, itā€™s not because thereā€™s anything wrong with that client or that thereā€™s anything wrong with you. It comes down to how well the client aligns with you and you align with the client.

    Iā€™ve never known a coach who wouldnā€™t get value out of this episode even a few years in to their coaching business ā€¦ or ten.

    Just the idea of money is fraught with complicated beliefs stemming from our childhoods and even further back than that. \

    Unhelpful beliefs about worth and earning and money are deeply rooted into our cultures and ancestry. So itā€™s not surprising that we all struggle with money mindset.

    Ā· And for some, money is distasteful ā€” a dirty thing. No doubt many dirty things have been done in the pursuit of money since humans started walking Earth.

    But money itself is just a tool. Thatā€™s an important shift right there. Itā€™s a neutral tool that, at this point in human existence, most need to employ to live.

    Let's pick this apart so you can have a mindset shift!

    Did you know that charging higher fees will help you become more confident as a coach?

    It worked for me and I've seen it work for my clients as well. Setting fees that will pay you well is an important threshold to cross as a new coach. The longer you wait to cross it the scarier it will feel.

    Sure, it makes sense to give some coaching away during coach training. Your trainer might have encouraged that because they want you to practice coaching skills with as many people as you can as often as possible.

    Practice integrates learning.

    The downside of offering free or low-cost coaching past coach training is it becomes an ingrained habit. Thatā€™s how some coaches get stuck in what I call perpetual student mode.

    This is where that practice-integrates-learning thing can work against you, as it becomes increasingly difficult to shift from free or charging little to charging fees that pay you well.

    Iā€™ve spent much of my life getting in my own way ā€” believing I wasnā€™t good enough or couldnā€™t do it ā€” whatever ā€œitā€ was at the time. You too?

    Iā€™d like to travel back in time to my younger self and show her all that I have accomplished in life so she knows she is enough and she can do it!

    Iā€™m lucky that I have a strong will and Iā€™m a problem solver. I go after what I want with fierce determination.

    But hampered by negative self-talk, that was like putting the gas pedal to the floor with the emergency break on. So much energy wasted!

    Now Iā€™ve learned how to regulate my nervous system and align my thinking to my goals.

    Itā€™s not automatic.

    I have to slow down in order to notice how Iā€™m getting in my own way then shift my mindset so I can move forward with ease. Itā€™s a daily mindfulness practice.

    When I first started my coaching business, I was perplexed why I wasnā€™t earning well or working with many paying clients. I was seriously contemplating quitting even though Iā€™d put so much time and money into this.

    I reached out to my previous mentor and complained that I wasnā€™t getting the results I hoped for from my efforts. If Iā€™m honest, somewhere in my brain I was secretly blaming her for my lack of results.

    You know that open ended questions are the most potent tool for coaching sessions.

    A single powerful question can evoke a positive shift in clients. Learning how to frame those questions in the moment is an art every coach can learn.
