How many times have you wanted to put your child in an extracurricular activity, but you stopped short because you didnāt think your child would understand or would be able to hear what was going on?
Language access in school is one thing, and we often fight hard for that. Language access in extracurricular activities is almost non-existent for our deaf and hard of hearing kids.
Today weāre going to talk about how to talk to your childās coach or instructor about tactical strategies to help your child get access to language and enjoy the activity, too.

This is a really special one today! I got to sit down with the author of Mighty Mila, Katie Petruzziello!
Katie and I chatted about how she chose books as a medium to spread positive awareness of deafness, helping your child learn to advocate for themselves in simple ways and how to step into leadership roles in our communities.
Katie brings such good thoughts and insight into this episode of raising two kids with hearing loss, and I hope this episode is an encouragement to any parents going through hearing loss with your kids!

Visual systems- are you doing them yet? These are so easy to put together and have been a game- changer in our house for communication with all of our kids!
When kids are learning language, and especially when they are younger, language is going to break down and then frustrations are going to happen.
Using visual systems in your home is a great way to not only help your kids learn language faster, but also to help with understanding when those language skills are lacking. I canāt wait to share with you what has worked in our home!

And thatās creating a communication plan for your family!
Everyone talks about what language our child is going to talk, and no one tells parents of kids with hearing loss that what they actually need is a communication plan that works for the family and builds your childās language skills at the same time.

A few of our facebook group members have asked some really great questions recently, and one of those questions is, āknowing if my child can hear me or not?ā
Thatās a question that I get asked a lot. How do I know that my deaf or hard of hearing child is hearing me, and do I know if my child is understanding me?
Hearing and understanding are two totally different skills, but they both work together to build the foundation of learning a language. Today weāre going to talk about the difference between hearing and understanding and how you can check for hearing and understanding with your child.

One of our Raising Deaf Kids Facebook group members said, āCurrently, we are struggling at bedtime and waking up without his CI.ā
Bedtime can be a little difficult with kids with cochlear implants or hearing aids because they typically donāt sleep with these on, and so if your child wakes in the middle of the night or isnāt easy to get to sleep, they canāt hear you in the process of it all.
And this is all happening at the time of the day where everyone is the most tired and cranky! The last thing we need are cranky pants moms and kids! Today weāre going to talk about how to make the bedtime routine a little more smooth for your deaf or hard of hearing child who wears cochlear implants or hearing aids.
