Itâs the MOST WONDERFUL time of the year!!! Itâs Christmastime! And weâre celebrating hard over here at Raising Sinners!
The story of Jesusâ birth seems to come alive every year at this time as parents, grandparents, friends, and family tell the story from Luke chapter 2. Every time we open Godâs word to read the account, it seems like it refreshes itself and becomes anew. Thatâs the truth of Godâs word, isnât it? Itâs always fresh and comes alive. And the Christmas story is no different.
By gathering to tell the story, youâre giving Jesus a seat at your table. Youâre inviting Him into your celebration and making much of Him, the Guest of honor. As we tell the story, weâre being faithful to the generations behind us who are depending on us to repeat and repeat the message of Christâs birth to redeem mankind. Oh, what a story! Oh, what a Savior!
We wish you and yours a blessed Christmas and a VERY Happy 2024!
As always, thanks for listening! We appreciate you!

December is here and we are excited over here at the Raising Sinners Podcast! We celebrate BIG!!! On this episode youâll hear us share some favorite memories of days gone by, traditions we began with our own children and fun things we continue to do with our grands.
For the Christian parent, the month of December is full of opportunities to point our children and community to Christ. So, we want to be intentional and prepared! Feeling wheels off already? Too many obligations? Take a breath. Refocus. Pull out your Bible and start drawing near to Jesus.
So often we forget the guest of honor! Remember who this month is all about in the first place! Itâs Jesus! Whisper His name. Invite Him in. Leave space at your table. And celebrate big! The Savior has come!
Thanks for joining us for this episode of RAISING SINNERS!

Today our guest, Katy Boatman, chats with us about her new devotional for boys, âYou Can Trust.â We were fascinated listening to Katy discuss how she landed on this writing project. (Youâll have to listen to find outâŠâș)
Preteen boys have a lot of thoughts spinning through their curious minds each day. But too often, their âwhat-ifâ questions are rooted in fear and anxiety as they try to find their way in a world that doesnât always make sense. This easy-to-read devotional by Katy Boatman offers daily encouragement and truths to combat that worry. Each of the 100 devotions, plus interactive activity days, (which sound super fun!) rallies boys to trust the God who has all the answers. Theyâll explore questions such as:
What if I donât feel strong enough?
What if Iâm scared?
What if my team loses?
What if God changes His mind about me?
âYou Can Trustâ offers boys tangible reminders that they can trust God with all their what-ifs and questions in life.
Katy lives in Nashville, is passionate about mentoring the next generation and authored a devotional book, âYou Can Rest,â for girls which was a finalist in the category of âYoung Peopleâs Literature for the ECPAâS 2023 CHRISTIAN BOOK AWARD. âCheck it out, too!

Today we are doing things a little different! Lisa recently joined Steph Thurling, the Executive Director of Christian Parenting, on her podcast THE CHRISTIAN PARENTING PODCAST to share her heart for resources for kids to grow their faith and her new devotional MY TIME WITH GOD written with her friends from our partner ministry, First15.
In a recent survey done by Christian Parenting and First15, parents gave an overwhelming response requesting tools for their kiddos. And MY TIME WITH GOD was born!
MY TIME WITH GOD is a devltional written for children ages 6-12 to help encourage and equip them to establish a lifetime of learning and walking with God thorugh daily scripture reading and reflection.
Over the course of 20 days, MY TIME WITH GOD will guide your kids (or grandkids!) thorugh some of the basic principles of the Christian faith like, why do I spend time with God? What is prayer? Who is the Holy Spirit? And so much more!
Go to ChristianParenting.org for more info and to purchase your copy of MY TIME WITH GOD!

We cannot contain our excitement for you to hear this conversation. James Mckinney joins us this episode to talk about his new (and first!) book, Navigating the Teenage Dating Years. We all have thoughts about our own dating paths, and for the most part, donât want to replicate those with our own kids. âș So, what to do? Go with the culture? Do what everyone else is doing? Tell them to wait until they turn 16 and turn them loose?
James Mckinney is a father of two teenagers and husband of twenty-three years to his wife, Melissa. He holds a Masters degree in Theological Studies from Liberty University and serves as the Minister of Adults at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Prosper, TX. His passion is to see marriages flourish and families walk in the reality and truth of Godâs word.
This book covers biblical principles for dating! What? The Bible says something about dating? The Bible says something about every aspect of our life and gives us principles to live by. When we read and study His word, we can apply these godly principles to our lives. And dating is NO exception! Youâll gain so much insight into the whatâs, whenâs and howâs of dating as you read and ponder Jamesâ wisdom on this teen rite of passage.

Anger in parenting is common. We get frustrated with ourselves, our kids, and we lose it sometimesâŠa lot of times. And then the cycle of remorse, regret, guilt kicks in. Weâve all been there.
Natalie Hixson is our guest today to tackle this hard and sensitive subject. And she does it with humility and vulnerability. Natalie is a wife, mother, auntie, and certified professional life coach who helps discouraged Christian moms overcome destructive anger and burnout. After learning to thrive in motherhood and process anger in a healthy way, Natalie became convicted to help other moms avoid those dark years of motherhood by helping them to appreciate and process their anger, learn to identify their triggers, and ultimately control their reaction to those triggering situations.
FREE OFFER: Natalie has offered our audience access to her TRIGGER TRACKER as a first step to overcoming destructive anger, helping moms to be the fun, present and joyful wives, and moms they want to be. The TRIGGER TRACKER will help identify triggers, create awareness, and support moms in changing their mindset around the triggers.

Chris Sasser joins us today. Weâve had Chris on before and heâs extremely wise and helpful in discussing real life topics, like performance and how to parent against the mentality of EVERYTIHNG IS A PERFORMANCE! Weâre our kidsâ parents, not their agents. âș
Chris is the pastor of family ministries at Port City Community Church in Wilmington, NC and author of the book, âBags.â (If you havenât read this bookâŠread it!)
There is a ton of pressure in a childâs life to perform in the classroom, on the field and at home. Chris shares 3 practical thoughts for parents to consider in parenting them to know their identity is in Jesus Christ and not in what they do.
âWe must redefine what success looks like in our family.â
He encourages parents to view the Ted xTalk, âChange the Game Projectâ by John OâSullivan.

UPDATE: Hopefully youâve listened to part 1 of this discussion with our friend, Caitlin Fechner. Weâd highly recommend you listen to part 1 before diving in with us for part 2.
We surveyed parents a few months ago about where they stood with regards to allowing (or not allowing) sleepovers for their kids. The reviews were heavy on the âno wayâ or âfamily onlyâ but there were quite a few parents landing on âyes, theyâre fun and such a great childhood memory!â And they are and were!
In the internet age, information is coming at us at lightning speed. So, we know more. In real time. What do we do with that knowledge? Should it affect our parenting?
Our friend, Caitlin Fechner, joins us for this 2-part series. Caitlin has a BA in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and a MS in counseling from SMU. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor, currently employed as a therapist with Dallas ISD. Sheâs married to Michael, and they have two sons, Trey and Milo. We had so much to talk about that we decided to devote 2 episodes to this topic. This discussion is hard and real. Sleepovers in the 1970s consisted mostly of junk food, music, and a game or two of âstraight as a board, light as a feather!â (iykyk) âș
Sleepovers in the 2020s can look a lot different. As always, youâre the parent and will make decisions for your family that reflect your family values and parenting style. Weâre all doing the best we can most days, and thatâs the truth. Hopefully this episode will give you something to think about and consider as you make decisions for your family.

SUMMER is a great time to play catch, isnât it? We can take a breath and enjoy life at a slower pace. Thatâs exactly what we plan to do over the next few weeks! The Raising Sinners Podcast will be re-playing some of our favorite episodes (and yours!). Today weâre talking CHANGE. Join us for our final RE-PLAY this summer as we discuss seasons of change with our friend Debbie Stephens. Stay cool! Lisa and Chrissie
Change is inevitable. But all at one time? New city. New church. New friends. New schools. New home. New dog (hey Moose!)
The Stephens family has experienced lots of change in the couple of years and we wanted to check in with the queen of the household herself, Mrs. Debbie Stephens! Wife, mom, speaker, teacher and funny girl, Debbie shares from her heart how theyâve navigated their new normal.
Debbie is married to Jarrett Stephens, senior pastor of Champion Forest Baptist Church in Northwest Houston, Texas. They have 4 daughters and 2 dogs. (Fun fact: both Jarrett and Debbie have been guests on The Wonder Podcast! âș)
âObedience is costly but so worth it.â Debbie Stephens
In obedience, the Stephens family left their life in the Dallas area and embarked on a new journey, but it wasnât easy.
Teaching our children to be flexible is difficult on many levels because most find their security in routines and consistency. Change is hard. But the Stephens family has done it with grace and come out on the other side shining bright! Listen in to Debbieâs tips on communicating change with your kids and giving space to grieving, new schedules and making choices.

SUMMER is a great time to play catch, isnât it? We can take a breath and enjoy life at a slower pace. Thatâs exactly what we plan to do over the next few weeks! The Raising Sinners Podcast will be re-playing some of our favorite episodes (and yours!). This week Lauren Chandler will be joining us (again âș) to talk about her book, PRAISE HIM! We absolutely LOVED our visit with Lauren. Grab a coffee and enjoy this convo amongst friends. Happy Summer! Lisa and Chrissie
Chatting with Lauren Chandler was truly like catching up with an old friend. She is DE-LIGHTFUL!!! Lauren is an avid writer, a worship leader at her home church, The Village Church, in Flower Mound, Texas where she and her husband, Matt, have served for almost 20 years, and mom to her 3 children. Lauren is also a Bird Lady! Thatâs right! She watches birds, feeds birds, and even has an app on her phone telling her what kind of bird is perched on her windowsill at any given momentâŠsheâs legit! We just love her!
And she has a sincere and pure heart for worship. When her kids were younger, she wrote a song to help them in the highs and lows of life. That song, became PRAISE HIM!, her new childrenâs book out NOW. Laurenâs lyrical lines are accompanied by whimsical illustrations and encourage children that no matter day or night, wherever they go, they can praise God continually.
From page to page, readers will follow a child through her day as she goes from sunny morning to stormy afternoon and then a shadowy night. Parents can utilize this book as a great resource to remind their children that God is always there with us, even when days are hard, and that only simple words are needed to praise Him.
Go to LaurenChandler.com to read more about Lauren, and her newest book, PRAISEHIM! Itâs available everywhere books are sold.
Connect with Lauren on Instagram @laurenchandler
We hope you enjoy our conversation with Lauren. Sheâs the real deal. Her heart for Christ and worship encouraged our hearts in many ways. As always, thanks for listening! We are thankful for you! Lisa and Chrissie

SUMMER is a great time to play catch, isnât it? We can take a breath and enjoy life at a slower pace. Thatâs exactly what we plan to do over the next few weeks! The Raising Sinners Podcast will be re-playing some of our favorite episodes (and yours!). This week, weâll be talking FRIENDS with our friend, and mom squad member, AMY PIERSON! Donât overthink making friends â for yourself or your kids! Enjoy! And Happy Summer! Lisa and Chrissie
Friends. Whether you are 8 or 58, making friends can be tricky. Especially today when we are living in a false reality world called âsocialâ media. We have more âfriendsâ than ever, but are experiencing depression, loneliness, and isolation more than ever, too.
Amy Pierson, mom to Eva, Isaac, and Benjamin, shares her personal experiences as a new mom in a big city, and how she helps her children navigate friendship.
âWhy donât we invite someone?â These are Amyâs connection words. Going to the park? Invite someone! Going to eat dinner after a game? Invite someone! Taking a class at the gym? Invite someone! Weâre all looking for an invitation. A simple invitation connects two people. Itâs not hard to do, but why donât we do it? Fear. We talk about it.
âYou have to want friendship more than you fear not having it.â
We also discuss modeling friendship, being proactive and âhelpingâ younger children learn how to be a friend. Thanks Amy! As always, we LOVE having Amy on our show. If you havenât listened to THE WONDER PODCAST, check it out! Amy has been a frequent guest and friend. Sheâs full of godly wisdom. Thank you for listening! We appreciate you!

SUMMER is a great time to play catch, isnât it? We can take a breath and enjoy life at a slower pace. Thatâs exactly what we plan to do over the next few weeks! The Raising Sinners Podcast will be re-playing some of our favorite episodes (and yours!). First upâŠEXPERIENCING GOD WITH RICHARD BLACKABY! Dr. Blackaby was just incredible to talk to. He made us feel so at ease and we loved his stories of growing up in the Blackaby household. Enjoy and Happy Summer! Lisa and Chrissie
We have to admit itâŠWE ARE BIG EXPERIENCING GOD FANS!!! Dr. Henry Blackaby wrote the study 33 years ago, we have completed the study countless times over the years, and it has shaped us, encouraged us, challenged us and strengthened us! So, we were a little starstruck when Dr. Richard Blackaby joined us for this interview.
Dr. Richard Blackaby, Henryâs son and ministry partner is the General Editor of the completely revised, Christian Standard Bible (CSB) Translation of the Experiencing God Bible. Just released, it features unique design elements and study helps including sections throughout the Bible asking, as only Henry Blackaby can do, âDid you notice?â We so often read Godâs word in a hurry and miss so much truth and detail. This Bible will help us think, study, and absorb what God would have for us each day. And experience Him in His word.
We talk a lot about the study that changed us in this episode. But we also ask our guest some parenting questions. One of our favorite quotes, âThere arenât enough rules to make your kids love Jesus. So be so fun and full of joy that they canât possibly NOT want to follow Christ!â AMEN!!!! As Chrissie likes to say, âTHE PARTY DONâT STOP!â
We were honored Dr. Blackaby joined us, and we hope you enjoy this episode of Raising Sinners as much as we did!

Teaching our children to be selfless and think of others first is a big parenting goal always looming in the backs of our minds, but seriously, itâs hard in the day-to-day moments of life to really instill this into our childrenâs minds and hearts. Our society says worry about yourself! Focus on yourself! Take care of yourself! ME ME ME!
But the scripture is clear, âSo he answered and said, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself.â Luke 10:27
Love God. Love others. Thatâs our marching orders.
Our friend Rebecca Rapp-Salas joins us again to talk about raising children who are Kingdom minded and have a heart for serving others. Rebecca grew up on the mission field and met her husband on the mission field. The Salasâ love Jesus and have devoted their lives to loving Him and others. This was an easy conversation. Rebecca and her husband David are raising their daughters Amelie and Toni to live out Luke 10:27. They serve others well. Rebecca gives us ideas, thoughts, and intentional ways we can raise children to think of others first and desire to serve them.
We donât have to teach our children to focus on their own needs. That comes with skin. âș We must teach our children to see those in front of us whom God created that need our love, impact, friendship, and possibly our food, clothes, money and Jesus.

Itâs May and summer is quickly approaching. We thought it would be fun to take a minute, and a breath, and dream about having a simple summer.
Our friend Rebecca Rapp-Salas joins us and shares how her family keeps it simple. Itâs funny but keeping is simple takes planning, intentionality, and grit. Keeping it simple isnât that simple after all! âș
What is a simple summer? Itâs recognizing the daily gifts of time, rest, and meals together that the school year typically doesnât afford us. Itâs fireflies at night, walks in the neighborhood, an overnight camping trip, visiting grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, VBS, and summer camp. Itâs lists of fun activities like smores over a fire, scavenger hunts through the park, adventures in the kitchen, service projects and late-night talks.
So many of us look up in August and wonder, âwhere did summer go?â Is this because we looked forward to that grandiose trip the whole summer and forfeit the daily blessings of a simple, regular day? We want you to think ahead and plan for a simple summer. Thank you, Rebecca, for spurring us on to do just that.

Our longtime friend Cheryl Scruggs joins us today to talk marriage, parenting and THRIVING!
Cheryl and her husband, Jeff, are biblical counselors and founders of Hope Matters Marriage Ministry. Their book, âI Do Againâ chronicles their story of marriage, divorce, and remarriage. They are passionate about seeing marriages changed, made whole and reconciled to Godâs plan. Cheryl and Jeff have two grown daughters and 3 grandchildren.
Our discussion on this episode centers around how women can thrive in good times, hard times and everything in between. In other words, we talk about thriving in LIFE. âAbundant life isnât perfect circumstances, itâs perfect peace within those circumstances.â
In her new book, âThriving Beyond Belief - Courageous, Rooted, Thriving Women,â Cheryl provides practical tools to improve every relationship, tools to know the real you, and tips on becoming more vulnerable.
âItâs important to remember thriving doesnât mean happy. You can thrive in every season of life, even when youâre not necessarily happy.â
Cherylâs book is available everywhere you get your books! She also hosts a podcast of the same name. âș Connect with Cheryl @cherylscruggs and @thrivingbeyondbeliefbook. You can also learn more about their ministry by going to www.jeffandcherylscruggs.com.

Itâs Holy Week and our favorite week to talk with our friend, and resident theologian âș, Susie Hawkins. She co-authored the book, âPassover for Christiansâ and helps us understand how to âenter the storyâ as Believers in Christ during this week of remembrance and celebration.
This weekend is the most momentous weekend in the history of the world. As Christians, we commemorate Jesusâ death during HOLY WEEK. Christians only have 2 main holidays, Christmas and Easter, so itâs very important to our faith to honor these days and know why we celebrate.
Helping our children understand Easter can be hard when weâre discussing death and hard topics like crucifixion. Most likely youâve been asked, âWhy is it called GOOD FRIDAY if Jesus died on that day?â Susie helps us understand the roots of âGood Fridayâ and offers ideas for allowing our children some space to be sad.
And youâll love all her ideas on making the story come alive at home through the Bible and activities to do as a family.
Susie has written a devotional series for YOUVERSION Bible app called, âThe Final Week of Jesusâ Life.â Subscribe today and be encouraged as you walk through Holy Week and the Scripture. Thank you for joining us, Susie!

Public? Private? Homeschool? What is a parent to do?
Mandy Hayes from THE MOM SQUAD joins us today. Mom to 3 daughters, she and her husband Marcus live in the Houston area, are in ministry and are treating this decision as a yearly one. Because they are in ministry, Marcus is lead pastor of Crossroads Baptist Church in The Woodlands, TX, they have lived in several places, and theyâve chosen schooling for their daughters that have best suited them at that time and place.
Mandy taught in the Chicago public school system for many years. Her daughters are in a hybrid, Christian school program now. She has also homeschooled them in prior years. So, her experience with each option is vast. And sheâs passionate about it.
The thing we need to remember is that God is in it all. As Believers, wherever we go, God goes. So, we should not fear these decisions. We pray, trust, and go.
Mandy is the author of, âPromise Me Youâll Always be 3!â She has previously been a guest on The Wonder Podcast. Thank you for joining us, Mandy!
Thank you for listening! We appreciate you!

Our guest today is Elizabeth Urbanowicz. Elizabeth is a follower of Jesus Christ who is passionate about equipping kids to understand the truth of the Christian worldview.
She holds a B.S. from Gordon College in Elementary Education and Spanish, an M.S.Ed. from Northern Illinois University in Literacy Education, and an M.A. in Christian Apologetics from Biola University. Elizabeth began her professional career as an elementary teacher in a Christian school.
She began her professional career as an elementary teacher in a Christian school. Several years into her teaching experience, Elizabeth realized that despite being raised in Christian homes, attending a Christian school, and being active in church, her students thought more like the culture than like Christ. Elizabeth began searching for curricular materials that would equip her students to think critically, helping them discover that Christianity is the worldview that lines up with reality. After not finding any materials that met this need, she began creating a curriculum for her students.
Elizabeth first taught Foundation Comparative Worldview Curriculum as an after-school class for third through fifth graders, and the results were incredible! Students were transformed from passive recipients of information to active evaluators of every message they receive. Parents and teachers alike noticed the impact these materials had on studentsâ media consumption, academic achievement, and everyday habits. This transformation lasted beyond the elementary years and guided studentsâ thinking in junior high and beyond.
Elizabeth now works full-time on developing comparative worldview and apologetics resources for children. Her goal is to prepare the next generation to be lifelong critical thinkers and, most importantly, lifelong disciples of Jesus Christ.
We thoroughly enjoyed our conversation with Elizabeth, and hope youâll be encouraged by her drive and passion to help parents teach their children to think critically with a Biblical perspective. Today more than ever we need this.
