Appeals Court Decides Whether Tyson Owes Ghost Cattle Operator

A federal appeals court sided with a Washington district court’s ruling that Tyson Fresh Meats did not owe Cody Allen Easterday any money for alleged breach-of-contract claims.

Easterday is currently serving a 11-year prison sentence for defrauding the company of $244 million in a ghost cattle scheme. Companies related to his operation had repaid at least $63 million to Tyson as of February 2023.

He claimed Tyson owed him approximately $100 million for using his likeness on meat product labels in Japan.

USDA Says Hog Had Wild H5N1, Utah Reports First Dairy Outbreak

The avian flu found in a backyard hog in Oregon appears to be a strain of H5N1 contracted directly from wild birds, rather than the strain that crosses over from birds to dairy cattle, according to top USDA officials.

Meanwhile, Utah has confirmed its first outbreak in dairy cattle, with infections discovered on eight farms in Cache County. The appearance followed the culling in early October of the entire flock of 1.8 million chickens after the virus was discovered on a Utah poultry facility for the first time since 2022.

Latest Beef Industry NewsEuropean Union Makes Decision On Cultivated Meat Ban

The European Commission criticized Hungary’s proposed ban on cultured meat, calling it “unjustified” and potentially disruptive to the EU single market.

“No lab-grown meat products are currently authorized in the EU, making a ban premature,” stated the Commission, adding that it could interfere with the EU’s scientific approval process for novel foods. Following a TRIS assessment, Sweden, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Czechia also opposed the ban, citing risks to market unity if cultured meat is later approved.

The Netherlands further argued that cultured meat could benefit farmers, offering a future-proof alternative for the agricultural sector. Hungary can now revise its draft ban in response to these comments.

Vilsack Calls For Congress To Act On Farm Bill

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is urging Congress to pass the overdue Farm Bill. “We need a Farm Bill now,” he emphasized in a call with American Farmland Trust, noting limited time left this fall for a bipartisan solution or at least an extension of the current bill.

Though hopeful for a five-year bill by year-end, Vilsack warns delays could disrupt 2025 farm financing. The 2018 Farm Bill, temporarily extended, expired on Sept. 30, putting pressure on Congress to act before the November elections.

    NCBA Criticizes Dietary Guidelines Recommendations

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) criticized the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee's recent push to replace high-quality proteins like beef with plant-based options. NCBA’s Ethan Lane called the suggestions "out-of-touch" and “dangerous,” pointing out that beans and lentils can't fully replace the nutrients beef provides.

Dr. Shalene McNeill, NCBA’s Executive Director of Nutrition Science, emphasized that while beef makes up only 5% of calories in the American diet, it supplies over 5% of essential nutrients like iron, B12, and protein. These recommendations, part of the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines process, will be reviewed by USDA and HHS.

Arkansas Beef Council Names Best Burger

The Arkansas Beef Council announced Bailey’s Family Restaurant in Cave City as the winner of the inaugural Arkansas’s Best Burger Contest with their Caveman Burger. Selected from over 2,400 nominations across 410+ burgers, the contest’s top ten burgers — two from each of the state’s five regions — were judged on taste, appearance, cooking, and overall impression by an anonymous panel.

The Caveman Burger stands out with a massive two-pound beef patty on a nine-inch bun, available as a double with optional cheese or bacon. Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture Wes Ward noted that the contest highlighted Arkansans' love for quality beef and local restaurants. The Arkansas Beef Council continues to support beef’s image and Arkansas's cattle industry through promotional and research efforts.

Latest Beef Industry News Vet Says Beef Producers Must Step Up With H5 Testing

A leading scientist and veterinarian, Kay Russo, warns the beef industry to start monitoring for H5 bird flu crossover from infected dairy herds. Speaking on the MeetingPod podcast, Russo noted that while the virus was first detected in dairy cattle in March and has since impacted poultry farms and workers, there's limited data on beef cattle.

Russo, with a DVM from Cornell and a master’s in avian health from the University of Georgia, emphasized the importance of testing beef cattle for antibodies now that a validated test exists. She stressed, "We can only manage what we know, and this virus isn’t going away.

Canadian Herd To Stabilize In 2025

The Canadian cattle herd is forecast to sustain the long-term trend of contraction to begin 2025 but will begin to stabilize by year’s end on improved feed pricing and availability. A smaller calf crop will be produced based on 2024 breeding stock but heifer retention should improve if feed conditions continue to remain stable or improve. Higher heifer retention coupled with a smaller calf crop will see lowered beef production and slaughter in 2025. As a percent of production, Canadian beef exports are forecast to remain strong while imports are forecast to soften on weakened consumer demand. For the complete article, click HERE.

    U.S. Beef Imports Up 21% in 2024

Through August 2024, U.S. beef imports saw a notable increase of 20.87%, rising from 2.51 billion pounds in 2023 to 3.03 billion pounds in 2024. Among the top contributing countries, Canada remained the largest supplier with 658.83 million pounds, a 3.18% increase from last year. Australia showed the most significant growth, with imports surging by 69.95%, reaching 635.69 million pounds, making it the second-largest beef exporter to the U.S. after Canada. Brazil also experienced a sharp increase of 41.89%, with imports growing to 496.21 million pounds.

On the other hand, Mexico saw a decrease of 15.54%, with imports dropping to 386.07 million pounds. Uruguay recorded the highest percentage growth among all countries, with imports increasing by 71.46% to 198.20 million pounds. New Zealand and Nicaragua also contributed to U.S. beef imports, with increases of 8.75% and 1.76%, respectively.

This growth in imports reflects increased global beef supply, with particular strength from regions like Australia and Uruguay, offsetting declines from Mexico. Overall, the U.S. beef import market has expanded significantly year-over-year.

EPISODE 52 DETAILSCould H5 Bird Flu Hit Our Beef Cattle Herds?Vet Says Beef Producers Must Step Up With H5 Testing

New Suspected H5 Cases In Humans Reported In Washington State

Health officials suspect that a strain of avian influenza linked to poultry operations has reached Washington State. The Washington State Department of Health (WSDH) reported four agricultural workers in Franklin County tested positive for H5 after working with infected birds at an egg-laying farm. About 800,000 birds were culled after testing positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The workers, who had mild symptoms, received antiviral treatment, according to WSDH.

Latest Beef Industry NewsFlorida’s Cultivated Meat Ban

A U.S. District Court in Northern Florida denied Upside Foods' request for a preliminary injunction on Florida's ban of cultivated meat. Chief Judge Mark Walker ruled the federal Poultry Products Inspection Act does not override the state's ban on the sale, distribution, or manufacture of cultivated meat. Upside Foods, based in Berkeley, California, sued Florida in August, arguing the law, effective July 1, is unconstitutional. The company has publicly opposed the law, including a "Freedom of Food" event featuring its cultivated chicken. The lawsuit continues as the court addresses the ban's constitutionality. McDonald’s Lawsuit Accuses Suppliers Of Fixing Prices

McDonald’s Corp. is suing nine beef processors, including Cargill, JBS, National Beef, and Tyson Foods, alleging they conspired to inflate beef prices since 2015. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, claims the companies worked together to limit slaughter-ready cattle and manipulate beef supply, violating the Sherman Act. McDonald’s seeks a declaration of the conspiracy, triple damages, and a permanent injunction to stop the alleged collusion. The companies have not commented on the case. EPISODE 51 DETAILSUSDA Proposed Rules For Alternative Marketing Agreements For Fed Cattle USDA Works For Fairer Fed Cattle Markets

During a Farmer and Ranchers in Action event at the White House on Oct. 8, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack announced several steps to create transparency and fairer trading in the cattle markets.

Vilsack said the new actions are part of the effort under the Packers & Stockyards Act of 1921 to enhance price discovery in cattle markets. The agency released a report showing unjust and anticompetitive pricing strategies that exist in today’s beef market.

For years, USDA has fielded complaints from producers around beef packers using reported regional cash or spot prices as base prices for fed cattle formula pricing agreements, commonly known as Alternative Marketing Agreements (AMAs).

The USDA reports this is especially prominent in the fed cattle market as the share of cattle purchased by beef packers using AMAs increased to more than 70 percent while the average share of cattle sold in the negotiated cash spot market fell below 20 percent nationally.

USDA is issuing an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR) to seek comment on several possible interventions to develop new benchmarks as AMA base prices and approaches to trading when using benchmarks.

The public is invited to comment on this proposed rulemaking by visiting Regulations.gov and commenting on the “Price Discover and Competition in Markets for Fed Cattle”. Comments will close on Dec. 10, 2024. Read the whole article HERE

Ohio Battles Alternative Meat LabelsOhio Is The Latest State To Debate Alternative Meat Labels

According to MeatingPlace.Com, Two legislators in Ohio introduced legislation to regulate the labeling of alternative meat products.

House Bill 661, which Republican State Representatives Roy Klopfenstein and Jack Daniels introduced, would deem alternative proteins as “misbranded” if the packaging included the “identifying meat terms” of beef, wing, cold cut and other animal protein terms. Only if the packaging also included such words as “imitation,” “fake” or “vegan” would it be eligible for sale in Ohio.

The bill would also prevent school boards from purchasing misbranded alternative-meat products.

If a food manufacturer’s products were classified as “misbranded” under the bill, companies could face civil penalty of up to $10,000 for each day a violation occurs. Read the entire article HERE.

The poultry industry — concentrated in southeastern states and still reeling from Hurricane Helene — could be hardest hit in the meat sector, but extended port closures would quickly be felt nationwide, with 13% of beef, 15% of poultry, and 25% of pork production exported annually.

Erin Borror, U.S. Meat Export Federation vice president for economic analysis, said that the strike-hit Eastern and Southern ports are responsible for at least $100 million a week worth of pork and beef exports, with a typically faster pace of outbound shipments in the fourth quarter.

Senators Introduce Bill To Amend Federal Meat Inspection Act

U.S. Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vt., along with Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Cory Booker, D-N.J., introduced the Livestock Owned by Communities to Advance Local (LOCAL) Foods Act. The legislation aims to amend the Federal Meat Inspection Act of 1906 to support small-scale meat producers in rural areas by updating the "personal-use exemption."

The bill would allow consumers to purchase live animals from local producers and designate agents for slaughter and processing, easing bottlenecks caused by the limited number of USDA-inspected slaughterhouses. The move is intended to help small farmers avoid delays and continue providing locally sourced food to their communities.

Welch said the legislation would cut through regulations that favor large-scale operations, ensuring small producers remain competitive. The bill is supported by several farming organizations, including the Farm Action Fund and the National Family Farm Coalition, as a way to boost local food access and protect farmers’ rights to sell directly to consumers.

Cheap Burgers Becoming Harder To Find

According to a report from Bloomberg, the rising cost of beef is pushing burgers out of reach for many Americans, as the price of fast food continues to climb.

In the second quarter of 2024, the average fast-food burger cost $8.41, a 16% increase from five years ago, according to Technomic’s Ignite Menu data. Even McDonald’s has seen prices surge, with a Big Mac averaging $5.29 — up 21% since 2019.

The report said the root of the issue lies in dwindling cattle numbers, which hit a 73-year low in early 2024. Severe droughts, beginning in 2020, have forced ranchers to reduce herds, further driving up prices. While recent rainfall has improved conditions, higher interest rates and operating costs have made it too expensive for ranchers to rebuild herds quickly. Beef prices are expected to rise until at least 2026, with long-term challenges posed by climate change.

Fast-food chains are responding with promotions to attract customers, but experts predict that the days of dollar-menu burgers are largely behind us. Consumers may need to adjust to beef becoming a pricier delicacy, similar to pre-McDonald’s times, as the cattle industry faces ongoing environmental and economic hurdles.

EPISODE 49 DETAILSDeal Reached On Sale Of Ponzi Scheme Cattle CompanyPonzi Scheme Cattle Company, Agridime, Has Been SoldPonzi Scheme Cattle Company Agridime Sells To North Dakota Investor

North Dakota rancher Wylie Bice and his partner are set to acquire Agridime, a beef marketing company exposed as a Ponzi scheme, for approximately $15.7 million. Now operating under the name American Grazed Beef, Agridime sells beef and other products directly to consumers online. Bice’s company, Sheer Marketing LLC, has already begun purchasing calves from North Dakota and other states for processing into steaks next year. A court hearing to approve the sale is scheduled for October 7, with objections allowed until October 2. Agridime, which owes millions to investors after collapsing due to its Ponzi scheme structure, has been under the supervision of a court-appointed receiver, Stephen Fahey. The SEC alleges Agridime raised $191 million from over 2,100 investors, with North Dakota investors owed about $40 million. The purchase includes the company’s frozen meat supply, equipment, and land in Kansas and Illinois, some of which may be sold. Bice aims to restore cattle processing to five or six semi-loads per week by next year and has seen a 38% rise in direct sales since the start of the year. For the complete article, click HERE.

EPISODE 204 DETAILSProgram Cattle, Beef Checkoff, Beef Industry News Cattle Buyers Continue To Recommend Program Feeder CattleProgram Feeder Cattle, Buying & Selling Tips

Many buyers are recommending that those producers that are enrolling in various programs to assist in marketing feeder cattle need to continue with those programs because they could be setting the benchmark of prices in the future. Mike Bolinger with Superior Livestock joins us again discussing program cattle, his thoughts on the Beef Checkoff and other various industry topics.

Latest Beef Checkoff & Industry NewsExport Federation Warns Of Port Strike Impacts Of Beef

Exports are heavily dependent on the Eastern ports threatened by an Oct. 1 strike deadline, but the ramifications of a halt in shipments would be serious for beef and pork industries, too, the U.S. Meat Export Federation warned late last week.

USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom said, “The three big West Coast ports are the leading outlets for U.S. beef and pork exports. That doesn’t mean the East and Gulf coast isn’t important. If we look at total waterborne exports of pork, about 45% of those go through the East and Gulf coast ports, and beef side about 30% of the waterborne exports.”

He pointed in particular to “quite a high percentage of very high value chilled beef that goes out from the East Coast in particular for destinations like Europe and the Middle East. He said we can’t overstate the importance of the East Coast and Gulf Coast ports. Even though the West Coast is larger, still a very significant quantity is exported through the East and Gulf coasts.

Halstrom said any halt in port activity “will back up the supply chain immediately,: and redirecting meat exports to the West Coast is “by no means a long-term solution at all,” because a vast flow of grain and non-farm commodities and goods would also be left without port capacity. He said we’re challenged to export all of our products today using all the ports, so we cannot afford a shutdown in any part of the supply chain.

Plant Based Diets Are More Expensive

Originally posted in Alt-Meat and then again in MeatlingPlace.Com, consuming a plant-based diet that is nutritionally equivalent to one that includes animal proteins is “considerably” (34% to 45%) more expensive than an omnivorous diet, putting numbers to one complaint that’s been voiced about plant-based diets for years, according to new research from New Zealand’s Massey University.

As published in the journal “Frontiers in Nutrition,” the article reviews recent modeling studies using Linear Programming to determine the respective roles of animal- and plant-sourced foods in developing a least-cost diet in the United States and New Zealand.

The abstract said that “In both economies, least-cost diets were found to include animal-based foods, such as milk, eggs, fish and seafood, to meet the energy and nutrient requirements of healthy adults at the lowest retail cost.

The article said , the costliest culprits in transitioning from an animal- and plant-containing least-cost diet to a plant-only based least-cost diet are mostly vitamins and minerals.

In conclusion, “Modeling of least-cost diets that consist exclusively of plant-based foods is feasible, but at a higher daily diet cost, and these diets are often close to limiting several key nutrients.

EPISODE 203 DETAILSKeep or Sell Heifer Calves, Beef Imports & MCOOLFeeder Heifers: Sell Now or HoldSell or Background Heifer Calves, The Pros & Cons

Feeder cattle prices have been outstanding all summer long. And many producers are faced with the dilemma of selling heifers and turning the cash or keeping heifers to go back into the cow herd. Mike Bolinger with Superior Livestock joins us discussing the pros and cons of both options, where we are at in the cowherd inventory and how beef imports could affect prices of beef.

Latest Beef Checkoff & Industry News Beef Producers Ask For Fed Support Of MCOOL

According to MeatingPlace.com, nearly three dozen groups associated with beef production, ranching and the environment signed on to a letter sent to the U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai, asking for her support to restore mandatory country of origin labeling (MCOOL) for beef.

Producer organizations, including Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund United Stockgrowers of America (R-CALF USA) regularly endeavor to keep MCOOL issues part of the national legislative conversation. This, although the World Trade Organization ruled in 2014 that such meat labeling law violates U.S. international trade obligations by discriminating against Canadian cattle and pigs and Mexican cattle.

Referencing a letter that Tai had published in the British newspaper Financial Times, in which she said she was committed to “meet working people where they are, redesigning the incentive structure so that communities are not pitted against each other,” the letter said, “This is precisely the help that ranchers and consumers need and consistent with your comments. We respectfully request that you issue a statement to lawmakers regarding your office’s position as to whether the United States has the authority to reinstate mandatory country of origin labeling for beef in the face of the substantive trade reforms you are seeking, including at the World Trade Organization.”

The letter and a list of the signing organizations are available HERE.

    Drought Continues for Oklahoma

Drought conditions have increased rapidly in Oklahoma in recent weeks. The latest Drought Monitor shows that 78.58 percent of Oklahoma is abnormally dry or in some stage of drought.

Because of the dry conditions, very little wheat has been planted at this time or it has been “dusted in” to await hoped-for rain. Prospects for winter wheat grazing are decreasing with each passing week. Wheat planted after mid-September will have less time to grow sufficient forage for winter grazing — assuming moisture is forthcoming. The start of winter grazing will be pushed back, and stocking rates will likely be reduced due to less available forage through the winter.

Oklahoma range and pasture conditions have deteriorated rapidly in the last month, with the percentage of pastures rated poor to very poor increasing from 19% to 34% in the last four weeks. Going into the winter in drought is ominous and raises concerns about 2025 forage prospects. Fortunately, hay supplies are much improved this year, which will help with winter feed needs. The combination of this year’s hay production and very large carryover stocks (May 1) from last year, leaves Oklahoma with record large total hay supplies this year — over 20% larger than the 10-year average.

The lack of wheat stocker demand and the beginning of the fall run of calves is putting pressure on cattle auction prices. Many unweaned calves are beginning to show up at auctions. Unweaned calves take a bigger discount, especially in the fall as variable weather increases animal health challenges and risks. There is time to add value to calves to be marketed this fall. Weaning (minimum 45 days), vaccinations, castration and dehorning will add value to calves marketed 45-90 days from now. Even better is documenting these practices in a certified preconditioning program that provides additional assurance to buyers. Many years of data confirms that preconditioned calves will bring premiums over unweaned calves. The 45-day cut-off for most fall Oklahoma Quality Beef Network (OQBN) sales is rapidly approaching in late September. Producers can find the sale schedule, program and sign-up information at Oklahoma Quality Beef Network, Oklahoma State University.

Latest Beef Checkoff & Industry News2025 Checkoff Plan Approved by Beef Promotion Committee

The Cattlemen’s Beef Board (CBB) will invest approximately $38 million into programs of beef promotion, research, consumer information, industry information, foreign marketing, and producer communications during fiscal 2025, subject to USDA approval.

In action at the end of its September 4-5 meeting in Denver, Colorado, the Beef Promotion Operating Committee (BPOC) approved Checkoff funding for a total of 12 “Authorization Requests” – or grant proposals – for the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2024. The committee, which includes 10 producers and importers from the Cattlemen’s Beef Board and 10 producers from the Federation of State Beef Councils, also recommended full Cattlemen’s Beef Board approval of a budget amendment to reflect the split of funding between budget categories affected by their decisions.

Eight contractors and two subcontractors brought 12 Authorization Requests worth approximately $46.8 million to the BPOC this week, approximately $8.8 million more than the funds available from the CBB budget.

“We’re consistently impressed with the proposals that our contractors bring forward each year, and choosing which initiatives to fund is a real challenge,” said Andy Bishop, CBB and BPOC chair. “Our budget amounts to slightly less each year because of inflation. To put it in perspective, a dollar in 1985 is worth just 35 centsÂč today. That means we simply don’t have the buying power that we had when this program first started.

“As we expected, the Authorization Requests we reviewed this week were full of new ideas and innovative approaches supporting the Checkoff’s core programs of research, promotion, foreign marketing, industry information, consumer information and producer communications. Our committee did a great job of balancing our budget and distributing our limited funds in what we believe is the most optimal way possible. I personally thank our contractors and committee members for all their hard work, and I look forward to future Checkoff successes throughout FY25.”

In the end, the BPOC approved proposals from eight national beef organizations for funding through the FY25 Cattlemen’s Beef Board budget, as follows:

American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture - $600,000Cattlemen’s Beef Board - $1,800,000Foundation for Meat and Poultry Research and Education - $600,000Meat Import Council of America / Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative - $900,000National Cattlemen’s Beef Association - $25,700,000National Institute for Animal Agriculture - $95,000North American Meat Institute - $280,000United States Meat Export Federation - $8,000,000

Broken out by budget component – as outlined by the Beef Promotion and Research Act of 1985 – the FY25 Plan of Work for the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board budget includes:

$9,120,000 for promotion programs, including beef and veal campaigns focusing on beef’s nutritional value, eating experience, convenience, and production.$8,600,000 for research programs focusing on pre- and post-harvest beef safety, scientific affairs, nutrition, sustainability, product quality, culinary technical expertise, and consumer perceptions.$7,500,000 for consumer information programs, including Northeast influencer outreach and public relations initiatives; national consumer public relations, including nutrition-influencer relations and work with primary- and secondary-school curriculum directors nationwide to get accurate information about the beef industry into classrooms of today’s youth. Additional initiatives include outreach and engagement with food, culinary, nutrition and health thought leaders; media and public relations efforts; and supply chain engagement.$2,955,000 for industry information programs, including dissemination of accurate information about the beef industry to counter misinformation from other groups, as well as funding for Checkoff participation in the annual national industrywide symposium about antibiotic use. Additional efforts in this program area include beef advocacy training and issues/crisis management and response. $8,000,000 for foreign marketing and education, focusing on 13 regions, representing more than 90 countries around the world.$1,800,000 for producer communications, which includes investor outreach using national communications and direct communications to producers and importers about Checkoff results. Elements of this program include ongoing producer listening and analysis; industry collaboration and outreach; and continued development of a publishing strategy and platform and a state beef council content hub.

The full fiscal 2025 Cattlemen’s Beef Board budget is approximately $42.2 million. Separate from the Authorization Requests, other expenses funded include $305,000 for program evaluation; $750,000 program development; $200,000 for Checkoff education resources; $575,000 for USDA oversight; $220,000 for state services; $200,000 supporting services and litigation; and approximately $2.0 million for CBB administration. The fiscal 2025 program budget represents an increase of slightly less than 1.0% percent, or $150,000, from the $42.1 million FY24 budget.

For more information about the Beef Checkoff and its programs, including promotion, research, foreign marketing, industry information, consumer information and safety, contact the Cattlemen’s Beef Board at 303-220-9890 or visit DrivingDemandForBeef.com.

    ABOUT THE BEEF CHECKOFF

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The Checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States may retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national Checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.

Anthrax Confirmed In Carbon County, Wyoming

According to the High Plains Journal, Anthrax has been confirmed in multiple beef herds located in Carbon County, Wyoming. This is the first confirmed anthrax in Wyoming cattle since the 1970s. Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory confirmed the diagnosis late Aug. 31.

Both WSVL and private veterinarians were essential in the diagnosis of anthrax impacting several herds in the region.

Dr. Hallie Hasel, Wyoming state veterinarian, said protecting animal and human health is critical upon diagnosis of a zoonotic disease. She went on to say that the Wyoming Livestock Board will continue working with producers and private veterinarians to reduce further spread and limit human exposure through recommendations for carcass disposal and vaccination. Anthrax vaccine is approved for multiple livestock species and highly effective.

Anthrax is a bacterial disease caused by Bacillus anthracis, a naturally occurring organism with worldwide distribution. The spore-forming bacteria may survive in the soil for years to decades, resulting in sporadic outbreaks which usually occur after periods of drought followed by heavy rain.

Domestic and wild animals may become infected when they breathe or ingest spores in contaminated soil, plants, or water. Clinical signs of anthrax in livestock include sudden death, weakness, staggering, difficulty breathing, fever, and bloody diarrhea.

Owners of livestock experiencing clinical signs consistent with anthrax or sudden death should contact their private veterinary practitioner.

U.K. Sheep, Cattle Industries On Alert After Bluetongue Virus Detected

An outbreak of bluetongue virus on England’s North Sea coast has British agriculture officials and the cattle and sheep industries scrambling to contain the insect-borne disease, which can devastate ruminant herds.

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) said Tuesday that 27 animals on 10 farms have been confirmed with bluetongue infection. Authorities this week extended restrictions on transport of livestock to all of Norfolk and Suffolk counties and part of Essex.

The United Kingdom, which had a small bluetongue outbreak mostly among cattle from November to March, has been on alert for weeks due to a larger ongoing outbreak across the North Sea in the Netherlands, amid warm summer weather when the biting midges that spread the virus are most active. The insect vectors can be blown by wind across the North Sea from continental Europe. Goats and deer are also at risk of bluetongue, which can be fatal or cause infertility in livestock. U.K. authorities say there is no risk to people or food supplies.

The first new case in England was detected on Aug. 26 in a sheep on a farm near Haddiscoe in Norfolk, about 150 miles across open water from the Netherlands. A 20-kilometer (12.4-mile) temporary control zone was initially ordered, and within four days authorities saw evidence of “local transmission.”

World meat prices down from July, still up on year

The Food and Agriculture Organization’s Meat Price Index averaged 119.5 points in August, down 0.7% from July, but still 3.7% higher than the same time last year. The United Nations released the FAO Food Price Index for August last week.

Poultry meat prices fell due to Brazil’s temporary export suspension following a Newcastle disease outbreak, despite the issue being resolved.

Global pig meat prices dropped for a second month, driven by weak import demand and ample supply, the report said. Ovine meat prices saw a slight dip after three months of increases, mainly due to reduced Chinese imports. However, bovine meat prices edged up slightly, influenced by seasonal declines in slaughter animal supplies in Oceania.

EPISODE 46 DETAILSBeef ImportsNebraska Poised to Fight Cultivated MeatNebraska Executive Order Enacted By Governor

U.S. beef imports totaled 342 million pounds in June, 16 percent higher year over year and 17 percent higher than the 5-year average. Once again, imports from Australia accounted for the largest portion of the year-over-year increase, up 75 percent from last year. Imports from Brazil were up nearly 51 percent year over year and imports from New Zealand were up 13 percent. Imports from smaller suppliers, including Argentina and Uruguay, were higher as well. Monthly imports from North America in June were significantly smaller than last year, with imports from Canada falling below 70 thousand for the first time since 2021. Throughout 2024, imports from Mexico have been consistently lower than the same period a year before. In light of of this information and with the lack of producers retaining heifers, many have speculated that there will be on pace to import 1 billions pounds of beef from both Australia and Canada.

Second-quarter imports totaled 1.012 billion pounds, a year-over-year increase of 12 percent. Leading that increase were imports from Australia, up nearly 59 percent year over year. The second-highest increase by volume in quarterly imports was from Uruguay, up almost 25 million pounds over the same period last year; Argentina sent nearly 13 million pounds more compared to last year. The chart below shows year-to-date imports through June for the top five suppliers. Imports from Australia continue to make up a much larger share of total imports compared to a year ago.

Latest Beef Industry NewsUSDA To Require More Proof For Animal-Raising And Environmental Claims

Companies that tout certain animal-raising and environmental claims on meat and poultry labels will need more documentation, according to updated guidelines from the USDA.

The agency said the move aligns with efforts to protect consumers from misleading labels and supports President Biden's Executive Order on Promoting Competition in the American Economy.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack emphasized that these updates promote transparency and fairness, ensuring that consumers can trust the labels on meat products. The guidelines “strongly encourage” third-party certification to validate claims such as "Raised Without Antibiotics," "Grass-Fed," "Free-Range," and "Climate-Friendly.”

USDA’s Center for Veterinary Biologics (CVB) has issued public notice that it is “now accepting submissions for field studies to support conditional or full licensure of nonviable, non-replicating vaccines.”

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in Boone, Iowa, at the annual Farm Progress Show, that there are “a number of companies that have been working on vaccines, and one company has now presented sufficient information to the USDA to allow me to authorize, the first field trial of a vaccine for cattle H5N1 for safety purposes.”

The initial field study of nonviable, non-replicating vaccine against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 is to be administered to dairy cattle to evaluate safety. “This would be the first field safety study for a bovine specific H5N1 vaccine and the first time a HPAI vaccine field study would be conducted outside a laboratory setting or on any type of commercial farm in the United States,” USDA said.

The agency emphasized that the field trials will only involve “non-viable, non-replicating vaccines” that do not cause virus shedding. Cattle vaccinated thereby can not transmit virus to other animals, milk, meat, people or into the environment, and these cattle and their products will stay in normal production.

USDA Expects Continued High Beef Imports From Uruguay Into 2025

The United States has grown rapidly as a market for Uruguayan beef, a trend likely to continue into next year, according to a new report from the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS).

Uruguay has recently jumped to sixth among the countries of origin for US beef imports, mostly frozen boneless, as “a profitable market which helps local meat packers compensate for lower exports at weaker prices to China.

Mcdonald’s — Value In The U.S., Big Burgers Elsewhere

According to meating place dot com, for much of the summer of 2024, McDonald’s has marketed “value” in the U.S., seeing lower-income consumer traffic drop noticeably as food inflation has risen. The dynamic has eroded the fast-food giant’s original reason for being as a low-cost convenience for busy families.

In other markets it’s the flip side of the coin: McDonald’s is rolling out its decadently large Big Arch burger in Canada and, reportedly, other international markets, such as Portugal.

By “decadent,” the Big Arch boasts a half-pound of Canadian beef patties, three slices of “white processed cheese,” crispy onions and slivered onions, pickles, lettuce and delicious “Big Arch” sauce. It weighs in with 1,030 calories just by itself. It also contains 96% of the recommended daily fat intake for the average adult.

McDonald’s has been testing the sandwich in non-U.S. markets since May.

  • EPISODE 45 DETAILSNebraska Launches Battle Against Cultivated MeatNebraska Poised to Fight Cultivated MeatNebraska Executive Order Enacted By Governor

Nebraska is poised to become the fourth U.S. state to formally institute laws that restrict the sale of cultivated meat, now that Gov. Jim Pillen has signed an executive order prohibiting state agencies and contractors from buying cultivated meat products starting in 2025. Pillen is working with the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) to develop new guidelines to “protect the state’s agriculture industry as well as consumers, from lab-grown meat.

Pillen also is calling on the NDA to begin developing a rulemaking process to ensure that any cultivated meat products sold in stores in Nebraska are “properly labeled and are not marketed next to natural meat on the same shelves.” Plans also call for the Nebraska state legislature to begin drafting a law to ban lab-grown meat in the Cornhusker State that could go into effect next year, the announcement said.

Florida became the first state to enact a cultivated meat ban criminalizing the manufacture and sale of cell-cultured meat that went into effect July 1 and prompted an outcry from investors in biotech and food companies, in addition to sparking a lawsuit by alternative protein company Upside Foods. Similar legislation was introduced In Alabama and Ohio soon after the initial move on cultivated meat by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in May.
